- Philip J. Lang was born on April 17, 1911 in New York City, New York, USA. He is known for Hello, Dolly! (1969), 42nd Street (1986) and Li'l Abner (1959). He died on February 22, 1986 in Branford, Connecticut, USA.
- He taught at the graduate schools of music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. He was the author of the textbook "Scoring for the Band". He also wrote scores for the Boston Pops Orchestra, Radio City Music Hall, Broadway musicals, television and ballet, and was also an orchestrator for the Metropolitan Opera, New York City.
