Through the first four episodes of “What If…?,” the animated anthology has managed to turn the MCU on its head with inspired alternative narratives while embracing a graphic style that elevates the characters and environments.
What if Peggy Carter (Haley Atwell) became the first Captain America through the lens of World War II expressionism? What if T’Challa/Black Panther (the late Chadwick Boseman) became Star Lord in a Guardians universe that reflects his personality? What if Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) turned detective in a film noir procedural? And what if Doctor Strange lost his heart instead of his hands in a surreal nightmare?
“We have the advantage that people have seen these places before, and so we have a lot of latitude and can do all sorts of things and they will get it,” said production designer Paul Lasaine. “So they see that room in the Captain America world,...

A few years ago the editors of Shadowlocked asked me to compile a list of what was initially to be, the ten greatest movie matte paintings of all time. A mere ten selections was too slim by a long shot, so my list stretched considerably to twenty, then thirty and finally a nice round fifty entries. Even with that number I found it wasn’t easy to narrow down a suitably wide ranging showcase of motion picture matte art that best represented the artform. So with that in mind, and due to the surprising popularity of that 2012 Shadowlocked list (which is well worth a visit, here Ed), I’ve assembled a further fifty wonderful examples of this vast, vital and more extensively utilised than you’d imagine – though now sadly ‘dead and buried’ – movie magic.
It would of course be so easy to simply concentrate on the well known, iconic,...

The 42nd Annual Annie Awards were handed out on a busy Saturday night in the awards world and "How To Train Your Dragon 2" was the big winner. The DreamWorks Animation blockbuster (it's true) took home six Annies including Best Animated Feature and Directing (Dean DeBlois). While the entire Academy votes on the Best Animated Feature category, this endorsement from the animation community can't hurt in a very competitive year. Other big winners included "The Simpsons," Amazon's "Tumble Leaf" and Oscar frontrunner "Feast" for the Best Animated Short Subject honor. "The Boxtrolls'" Sir Ben Kingsley took home the award for Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production and Phil Lord and Christoper Miller won for Writing in an Animated Feature for "The Lego Movie." A complete list of this year's honorees is as follows: Best Animated Feature "How to Train Your Dragon 2," DreamWorks Animation Directing in an Animated Feature Production Dean DeBlois,...

After the success of Frozen and The Lego Movie, it's perhaps understandable to have high expectations for upcoming animated fare. Just because a film is made with younger viewers in mind doesn't give those behind it an excuse to phone it in. Recently, the likes of Postman Pat: The Movie and The Nut Job will have tested the patience of mums and dads dragged along to the multiplex, but there's no such problem with Laika's latest offering The Boxtrolls.
The studio has cleverly forged its own path separate from Disney, DreamWorks and Pixar, bringing dark and spooky edges to their stop-motion work. Boxtrolls is an extension of the tone and style of its predecessors Coraline and ParaNorman, charting the journey of an orphaned boy,...

The oldest film festival in the world has premiered one of the newest types of filmmaking. The Boxtrolls is the latest stop-motion animation feature from Laika and what a breathtaking and highly entertaining film directors Anthony Stacchi and Graham Annable have delivered.
Based on Alan Snow’s novel Here Be Monsters, the story revolves an orphan boy apparently plucked from the human world as a baby and taken below ground by the Boxtrolls, fluorescent-eyed creatures whose outer skin or clothing are cardboard boxes and they go by the names of what their box contained: thus we have Fish, Knickers, Fragile and so on. The baby comes from Cheesebridge, presided over by Lord Portley-Rind (the silky-voiced Jared Harris, better known as Mad Men’s Lane Price), a dead ringer for Charles Dance whose only interest in life is cheese.

The art of the glass shot or matte painting is one which originated very much in the early ‘teens’ of the silent era. Pioneer film maker, director, cameraman and visual effects inventor Norman Dawn is generally acknowledged as the father of the painted matte composite, with other visionary film makers such as Ferdinand Pinney Earle, Walter Hall and Walter Percy Day being heralded as making vast contributions to the trick process in the early 1920’s.
Boiled down, the matte process is one whereby a limited film set may be extended to whatever, or wherever the director’s imagination dictates with the employment of a matte artist. In it’s most pure form, the artist would set up a large plate of clear glass in front of the motion picture camera upon which he would carefully paint in new scenery an ornate period ceiling, snow capped mountains, a Gothic castle or even an alien world.
