As contractions and cost-cutting continue to hit the nonfiction space, a major producer is changing its documentary strategy: The New York Times.
The Times is restructuring its documentary unit, which is behind its The New York Times Presents series, which has produced nearly four dozen documentaries, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. It is changing the unit with the goal of further enmeshing non-fiction video filmmaking into the company’s existing sub brands and verticals.
Several sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Times will be reducing its documentary output. Rumors have been swirling in the nonfiction community about the future of the Times‘ documentaries for some time. The media company released over 20 films in 2019 under their New York Times Presents banner while it released only four films in 2023.

The season of the very first sign of the zodiac is here, and that’s exactly why being a leader comes so easy for Aries folks.
And that’s no joke, Aries really don’t know what else to be but a boss, CEO or innovator, because they’d rather play by their own rules. They march to the beat of their own drum and rarely ever need anyone to play backup instrumentals. Their charm, playful personality and great sense of humor make up for their impulsiveness and sometimes hot-temper, and there’s absolutely no other sign who will keep it all the way real with you like an Aries does, even if it’s something you don’t want to hear. They tell it like it is, as dishonesty goes against their entire m.o.
As ambitious as they are — known for being some of the greatest to ever...

Travis Kelce has made no secret of his interest in an off-field career when he retire from the NFL.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end is now in talks to host his first game show – a reboot of Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? for Amazon.
Sources told Deadline that there are conversations but a deal is not yet closed. This could also depend on his availability given that he appears ready to suit up for the Super Bowl champions for another seasons – a “threepeat” if you like.
Kelce previously hosted dating show Catching Kelce for the USA Network, long before he got together with Taylor Swift.
It would mark the latest reboot of the format, which came from Mark Burnett, and aired on Fox between 2007 and 2009 and again in 2015. There was also a syndicated version and a reboot on Nickelodeon, hosted by John Cena, in 2019.
The news was broken by Perez Hilton.

2004's "Mean Girls" has become a seminal classic of teen girl cinema, with Rachel McAdams' Regina George, Lacey Chabert's Gretchen Weiners, Amanda Seyfried's Karen Smith, and Lindsay Lohan's Cady Heron just as culturally important (and quotable) as say, Matthew Broderick in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." A time capsule of early aughts fashion and sensibilities, "Mean Girls" is a cultural touchstone and arguably the last time a teen movie crossed over into mainstream popularity without being a part of a massive franchise like "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games" (or a slasher film). Simply put, "Mean Girls" is now woven into the fabric of American pop culture.
The film helped solidify Lohan's place as one of Hollywood's "it girls," and her off-set antics became just as talked about as whatever film she had out in theaters. So much so, that even the insulting nickname "fire crotch" for her made...

The critic of The Critic is the type who might occasionally exist in real life, but seems to loom far larger in fictional tales by artists who evidently have little love for the profession. As played by Ian McKellen, Jimmy Erskine is an erudite brute. Whatever love he once held for the theater is less apparent these days than the savage delight he takes in ripping performers and productions to shreds, and the satisfaction he takes in the status and influence afforded him by his job.
The Critic, directed by Anand Tucker, is the story of how far he’ll go when that position is threatened. Given that the film is scripted by Patrick Marber (of Closer and Notes on a Scandal), it’s little surprise he’ll go very far indeed. And given that he’s performed by McKellen, it’s safe to bet on a ferocious lead turn.

The first half of the Hulu documentary Queenmaker: The Making of an It Girl is a passable overview of the turn-of-the-21st-century heiress-celebrity scene, plus some of the bloggers who made their names as barnacles on the gilded ship. You probably know most of the boldfaced names: Paris and Nicky Hilton, Nicole Richie, Tinsley Mortimer. You might even know their most fervent chroniclers, including Perez Hilton and Gawker’s Emily Gould, professional gossips who made a meal ticket out of the usually blond, always-rich pretty young things they covered. It’s an intriguing enough story,...

Denise Richards has played plenty of trophy wives, both fictional and semi-fictional, but her latest role as the ex-spouse of a high-rolling crypto fraudster in upcoming series “Paper Empire” gave Richards the opportunity to do “something very fun and challenging and very different,” she says.
The show, which premiered at MipTV in Cannes last week, tells the story of financier Laurence Fintch (played by Robert Davi) who finds himself in jail after carrying out a multi-million-dollar cryptocurrency fraud. Fintch has no plans to stay in jail, regardless of what the FBI think, and soon hatches a daring plan to break out. Many people were shocked when it was revealed in early March that Vanderpump Rules star Tom Sandoval had cheated on Ariana Madix with Raquel Leviss. Given that the affair lasted for months, some also wonder if there were signs. According to Vanderpump Rules’ Peter Madrigal, a Sur manager, he saw signs that he initially “dismissed.”

According to a source who spoke to People, Sandoval had been cheating on Madix with Leviss “for upwards of six months all the while Tom was sleeping next to Ariana in bed.”

The story of Alexis Haines’ entanglement with a circle of Los Angeles-area home invaders has been told multiple times over: In the reporting of Nancy Jo Sales, who profiled her for Vanity Fair in 2010; on her own reality show, “Pretty Wild,” which aired on E! in 2010; and in Sofia Coppola’s 2013 film “The Bling Ring,” based on Sales’ work. Now, Haines (formerly Alexis Neiers), along with former associate Nick Norgo (formerly Nick Prugo), attempts to set the record straight in the Netflix documentary series “The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist.”
The three-episode series sheds little light, and bulks out its running time with idle musings on fame that feel warmed over from the early 2010s. It’s not that Haines’ and Norgo’s stories, told with both respective parties’ permission in this doc, don’t have inherent interest: Both of them became entranced by the concept of celebrity and, as...

Netflix’s three-part documentary series The Real Bling Ring: Hollywood Heist explores the true story behind the so-called Bling Ring. The new trailer shows the targets of the burglary crew and delves into the background of the thieves who wanted to be just as famous as the Hollywood stars they stole from. The fact they not only pulled off these robberies but then became celebrities is beyond ridiculous and can only happen in La La Land.

The sight of Paris Hilton's jewelry covering the surface of a plain, wooden kitchen table was staggering. Diamond bracelets. Bangles. Expensive watches. Cocktail rings. Pearls. This was just some of the stuff the LAPD had recovered when they raided the homes of the teens and 20-somethings we'd later come to know as the Bling Ring. It was 2009, and I was a 25-year-old correspondent for a cable TV network, crouched on the ground in front of police headquarters, scribbling notes as Detective Brett Goodkin shared pictures and descriptions of the loot with me and the three or four dozen other journalists assembled.
It wasn't surprising to me when, fewer than five years later, I found myself watching the story unfold again on the big screen in Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring." The fascination was already at a fever pitch in the fall of 2009. The group was eventually linked to...

The title of Jill Gutowitz's debut book feels less like a title and more like an observation: "Girls Can Kiss Now." I was in college when same-sex marriage was legalized in the United States - a year after I came out as bisexual - and it's hard for me to imagine a time when girls couldn't kiss. That's exactly what Gutowitz is trying to figure out at the heart of "Girls Can Kiss Now" (17): what caused such a clear shift in how the pop culture zeitgeist talks about queerness, and when did it happen?
Gutowitz doesn't have to dig far into her past to find her own queer beginnings in the '90s and early 2000s. In her (hilariously titled) chapter "One Day, You'll All Be Gay," Gutowitz outlines what it was like to watch movies in the early aughts, including analyzing "Bring It On." In the film,...

When asked what advice she would give her 20-year-old self, Tara Reid barely skips a beat: “Stay home.” Reid laughs, but it’s a laugh that feels loaded.
It was after her breakout success in turn-of-the-millennia films such as “The Big Lebowski” and “American Pie” that Reid found herself at the center of rumors about her partying. By the mid-aughts, she had become a tabloid staple alongside other women thrust into the public eye, such as Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Monica Lewinsky, their lives and bodies endlessly dissected on the then-still nascent internet.
“There was a part of me that kind of got circled in that circle,” Reid acknowledges. “[But] I never got arrested, never did a sex tape, never did anything really wrong except have a good time.”
This was an era before celebrities had social media to set the record straight, and Reid found the rumors difficult to shake.

Whoopi Goldberg apologized Monday night for comments she made on “The View” earlier in the day about the Holocaust, saying she was sorry “for the hurt I have caused.”
Goldberg had drawn wide criticism for the remarks she made during the show panel’s “Hot Topics” discussion, as the hosts began discussing the banning of the graphic novel “Maus,” which tells the story of author Art Spiegelman’s father and his experience in German concentration camps, with Jews depicted as mice and Nazis as cats.
“Let’s be truthful about it — because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No. It’s not about race,” she said. “It’s about man’s inhumanity to man. That’s what it’s about.”
By mid-evening, Goldberg had apologized in a brief statement posted to Twitter.

Whoopi Goldberg drew wide criticism Monday after saying on “The View” that the holocaust had nothing to do with race.
During the show panel’s “Hot Topics” discussion, the women began discussing the banning of the graphic novel “Maus,” which tells the story of author Art Spiegelman’s father and his experience in German concentration camps, with Jews depicted as mice and Nazis as cats.
But as the women got deeper into why “Maus” was banned, Whoopi made a bold claim.

When it comes to Britney Jean Spears, we go way back - all the way to '94.
Every afternoon after school, I looked forward to hanging out with Britney, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and Jc Chasez, thanks to The Mickey Mouse Club on the Disney Channel. I swooned over the soon-to-be *Nsync-ers and their baggy-jeaned Jodeci performances, while Britney and Christina felt like the cool older girls at my elementary school. For almost 30 years, Britney has been someone I'd grown up with from a distance.
Even with tween hormones and my devotion to a curly-haired teen Justin in the late '90s, I never stopped wanting to be like Britney.

The 2009 death of Brittany Murphy, the 32-year-old film star, is the sort of tragedy about which it’s tempting to search for answers — be they practical, about how it happened, or more cosmic, about what greater meaning can be found in the loss of life and potential here.
And yet some sets of facts exist beyond our ability to make satisfying sense of them. Sometimes, things are just sad. For all its probing into dark and uncomfortable places, the new documentary series “What Happened, Brittany Murphy?” can come to no more clarifying answer to its title question than what had seemed apparent to a viewer before the series began. As for meaning, “What Happened” settles for the bleakest and dullest of Hollywood cliché, ending in a place that degrades Murphy’s memory while pretending to honor it.

Anyone who reads her work knows that Cindy Adams can’t be still.
In normal times, the columnist — now 91 and still publishing multiple times a week — goes out to do reporting for her column in the New York Post. The column is a strange mélange of quotes from celebrities, conservative political analysis, invective against foes real and perceived, anecdotes about the peculiarity of life in Manhattan, and aphorisms and puns. About the only consistent thing about her column day to day is the tone — choppy, clipped, and utterly direct, treating the reader as someone intimate enough with Adams that she can speak frankly, and in shorthand.
It’s fitting that “Gossip,” Showtime’s new documentary series on which Adams is the central figure, takes a similar attitude to its subjects. “Gossip” is, at once, a personal and professional biography of Adams, a look at the rise of Rupert Murdoch as a media mogul stateside,...

To say that The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears caused a stir when it premiered Feb. 5 would be a grave understatement. Almost overnight, #FreeBritney became a household topic of conversation. Justin Timberlake, Perez Hilton and Sarah Silverman apologized for their past behavior and jokes directed at Spears, while others reflected on the misogynistic media culture that paved the way for what she has called an abusive legal arrangement. When “Gossip Girl” premiered on The CW in 2007, it was the height of the paparazzi-driven domination of Us Weekly, Perez Hilton, and TMZ. The concept of the show played on the era’s horrors and its enticing glitz. What if a high school, it asked, was glamorous enough to have its own Us Weekly? The result was a new take on age-old high school tropes. Anonymous blogger Gossip Girl upended the traditional populars-versus-outcasts narrative by constantly afflicting the comfortable.
Now, 14 years later, “Gossip Girl” is back, on Instagram, and ready to teach some new lessons to the influencers of the posh Upper East Side private school Constance St. Jude — the merged girls’ and boys’ schools from the original. The resulting reboot expertly captures the inviting gloss and wit of the original while documenting a new world order: Now, the coolest clubs are in Brooklyn.

In its two latest latest acquisitions, TrillerNet has bought Fite, a streaming platform best known for boxing and ring-sports events, and customer engagement platform Amplify.ai.
The deals, both announced today, are part of an 18-month string of acquisitions in which the parent of social media app Triller has invested $250 million. Triller, a short-form video rival to TikTok, has more than 300 million global users.
Along with the M&a transactions, TrillerNet said Amplify.ai co-founder and CEO Mahi de Silva will be the new CEO of TrillerNet. De Silva had already been non-executive board chairman of TrillerNet. He replaces Mike Lu, who will become president of TrillerNet and shift his focus to investor relations.

Adam Wingard’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” has already proven to be the biggest box office success of the current pandemic era. For the 38-year-old filmmaker, it’s a radical new chapter after his initial foray into the studio arena, when the response to his 2016 Lionsgate-backed “The Blair Witch Project” sequel left Wingard uncertain if he’d make another studio movie again.
The found footage project wasn’t a total bust — “Blair Witch” made a healthy $45 million compared to its $5 million budget — but it wasn’t the cash cow Lionsgate anticipated after the massive success of the original film. After its disappointing first weekend and mostly tepid reviews, Wingard and writer and frequent collaborator Simon Barrett took to Twitter to lament the film’s chilly reception, with some cheeky jabs at the weekend’s big winner, Clint Eastwood’s Tom Hanks-starring “Sully.” Wingard first tweeted, “Ya win some. Britney Spears has been back in the news again, first because of FX’s latest installment of “The New York Times Presents,” which was entitled “Framing Britney Spears,” which made #FreeBritney trend on social media. Then, the pop star continued her legal battle to remove her father’s conservatorship over her estate. Now, she was the subject of the Feb. 20 cold open sketch on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”
Chloe Fineman portrayed Spears in the fictional talk show sketch, “Oops, You Did It Again,” which you can watch above. Fineman started the sketch by reminding the audience that they know her from such things as “It’s Britney, bitch,” her “upbeat Instagram videos” and the word “conservatorship.” But the point of the show, she said, was to give people the chance to apologize for things they have done wrong, because since “Framing Britney Spears” premiered, she has received “hundreds” of apologies a day.

The Hills: New Beginnings will be back in production in the coming weeks.
Page Six is reporting that the MTV reality revival is set to resume filming on its sophomore run this summer.
At this moment in time, it's looking like a late July or early August return to filming, several months after the series was placed on hiatus due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
As expected, there will be new safety protocols in place to keep the cast and crew safe while new episodes are filmed.
“Production is working with health officials in Los Angeles County to assure a healthy filming situation,” an insider said.
“They will be doing some self-shooting but mostly back to filming with the new health regulations in place for filming.”
As previously reported, Mischa Barton has been let go from the series, and will have no presence on the second season.
Caroline D'Amore has been drafted in as her replacement.

When The Hills: New Beginnings returns for Season 2, Mischa Barton will not be a part of the cast.
TMZ broke the news, noting that The Oc alum did not bring enough to the reboot to return.
“Our sources say producers found Mischa’s story line a bit bland, and her personality a little boring,” TMZ reported.
“Bottom line, she wasn’t bringing much drama to the show.”
While everyone else is expected to return for Season 2, Brody Jenner reportedly landed a lucrative deal that will see him earn around $50k per episode.
It's unclear how much the rest of the cast is paid, but given that the show's popularity pales in comparison to its predecessor, it's likely nowhere near that much.
Barton struck a chord with viewers for opening up about her highly publicized past, including her feud with Perez Hilton.
