Tonight on ‘movies we really want to like’ we have Hal Ashby’s final feature, an L.A.- based crime saga with a great cast and spirited direction and . . . and not much else. It isn’t the train wreck described in Kino’s candid actor interviews, but we can see only too well why it wasn’t a big winner when new. Any day that a Jeff Bridges picture doesn’t shine, is a dark day in my book.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is jumping on board an ambitious new project. Lionsgate announced Tuesday that the “Hamilton” creator will be the creative producer for a feature film and TV series adaptation of Pat Rothfuss’ fantasy book trilogy “The Kingkiller Chronicle.”
According to Variety, Miranda, as “musical mastermind,” will produce the franchise and is expected to compose the original music and write the songs for the adaptations. He also has the option of being involved in a future stage production. Robert Lawrence will also produce for film and television, with Rothfuss serving as executive producer.
“Pat Rothfuss’ ‘Kingkiller’ books are among the most read and re-read in our home. It’s a world you want to spend lifetimes in, as his many fans will attest. Pat also writes about the act of Making music more beautifully than any novelist I’ve ever read. I can’t wait to play a part in...

I had another piece all ready to go, but I’m just too anal to let stuff run if it bugs me. What I usually do when faced with a decision to let something I don’t feel like running just has a blown deadline.
I’m suffering from severe depression and not giving a hoot is easy when you actually don’t give a hoot. The truth is I don’t give a hoot if I meet a fucking deadline or finish an article, design a poster, fix a painting, edit a chapter, respond to Comic Con or meet with anybody.
I have no motivation to do anything for myself. Especially when faced with days like this.
Today is the 21st of June, but I’m writing this the night before.
Sorry, Mike.

Most of us love the Trumbo-Douglas-Kubrick thinking man's leftist gladiator epic, and after several iffy disc presentations this exacting digital restoration follows through on the photochemical reconstruction done 25 years ago. It looks incredibly good, almost too good to be a Blu-ray. Kirk contributes a new featurette interview, telling us that this is the show he'll be remembered for. If Christian Kane gets hungry this weekend at Wizard World Comic Con in St. Louis, he’ll likely head over to the Tenacious Eats Presents Super-8 Marvel Munchies event Saturday at 2.
Tenacious Eats “Movies for Foodies’ is a one-of-a-kind event where food is prepared and plated in front of you while you watch a film on the big screen. We’ve covered many of the movie-dinners here at We Are Movie Geeks. Now we’ll be teaming up with Tenacious Eats this Saturday at Wizard World Comic Con for an event we’re calling Tenacious Eats Presents Super-8 Marvel Munchies. It will be from 2pm to 2:45pm in Room 106 at America’s Center.
The astronomical success of The Avengers Age Of Ultron and its $200 Million worth of state-of-the-art CGI effects show how far the Marvel Universe has evolved. Marvel Comics very first foray into film was a 1966 syndicated package...

Today is my sister’s birthday.
She would have been 60 years old had she lived. She’s been dead twice as long than she was alive. My sister Sharon Davis was assaulted and left for dead in a South Jamaica Queens vacant lot.
People passed her all night, if just one would have stopped and gotten help, perhaps my big sister would be alive today. Sharon was my inspiration for Sharon Hawkins who any real animation and comic fans knows is Vigil Hawkins’ (Aka Static Shock) sister.
I named all of Static’ family after mine. Among them, Virgil’s mom and dad, Jean Hawkins and Robert Hawkins, named after Jean Davis Lawrence and Robert Lawrence, named after my mom and step-dad.
Sharon Hawkins was my way of honoring and keeping the spirit of my sister alive plus it gave my mom a hoot to see her family all together in a way.

Twenty-one years ago, five friends, Denys Cowan, Derek Dingle, Dwayne McDuffie, Christopher Priest, and I partner to form Milestone Media. The Dakota Universe was born soon afterwards. There was one goal above all: to create a universe of good stories, well told, featuring characters of color.
We did, and when we did, comics changed.
Milestone was international news on a grand scale. That news rarely, if ever, just showcased one of us. We all had a hand in the creation of what may be the most influential, certainly the most successful, superhero universe featuring characters of color ever.
What we thought was a pretty good idea to create heroes of color became a cultural phenomenon and movement. Needless to say at the core of any real pop culture movement are its fans, and Milestone’s fans take their Milestone seriously.

With the incredible success of books being transferred into TV shows lately (Walking Dead, Game of Thrones), it's no surprise that TV studios are anxious to pick up properties to popular books to turn into series of their own. The latest acquisition is Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicles, which is hands down one of the greatest fantasy books put to paper. Come inside for all the (scant) details.
Excited doesn't begin to describe how I feel right now. The Kingkiller Chronicles (The Name of the Wind, Wise Man's Fear, with a third on the way) are among the best books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. They're written incredibly well, set in a world steeped with deep history, powerful characters, and one of the most engaging storylines out there. While they are relatively new (the first book was published in 2007), they've become almost instant classics with fans all over the world.

The astronomical success of The Avengers and its $200 Million worth of state-of-the-art CGI effects shows how far the Marvel Universe has evolved. Marvel Comics first foray into film was a 1966 syndicated package of cartoons called Marvel Superheroes that ran on local TV stations. Marvel comics announced the upcoming series in the “Marvel Bullpen Bulletins” of the November 1966 issues, stating “It won’t be long before our swingin’ super-heroes make their star-studded debut on TV, appearing five nights a week – that’s right, five – count ‘em -five nights a week, for a half-hour each night. So you’ve just got time to make sure your set’s in good working order – check your local paper for time and station – and prepare to have a ball!”

The actor's fame was assured in a clinging wet shirt in Pride and Prejudice and now he has an Oscar nomination for his starring role in A Single Man. His true passion, however, is far removed from the trappings of stardom
The idea of being a minority taste appealed to Colin Firth. It was a comfortable place to be. There would be fans around, of course, but not banks of adoring hoi polloi lining the pavement when he went out for a stroll.
"There are some actors who, wherever they go, people show up because they think they are fantastic," he once mused. "Then there are slightly marginalised people who are like somebody's secret. I feel like a Second Division football team that has this following who are more into it for the fellowship of each other."

Back in February, we revealed that “Coraline” producer Bill Mechanic had snatched up the rights to “Deadworld,” a comic book series that focuses on a zombie apocalypse’s aftermath — and like the titular dead flesh-eaters, this story is rising again.
Variety announced today that Mechanic will be joined in his “Deadworld” efforts by Dark Hero Studios’ David Hayter and Benedict Carver. The film is looking to begin production in 2010.
According to Variety, the story of “Deadworld” picks up four months after an event in which zombies have overtaken the planet, with humans few and far between. The protagonist is a character called “King Zombie, a Harley-riding corpse who holds a grudge against the survivors who made him an outcast.”
Hayter, of course, is the screenwriter behind several comic book projects, most notably “X2: X-Men United” and Zack Snyder’s adaptation of “Watchmen.” (Did’ja also know he’s the voice...

Roughly five years ago, it looked like the comic book "Deadworld" was going to be adapted for the screen. George Clooney's Maysville Pictures was on board with Robert Lawrence producing and Todd Alcott ( Antz ) scripting. Mark Pavia ( The Night Flyer ) was circling to direct. Then the project seemed to fizzle out. There's renewed interest in the property now from producer Bill Mechanic ( Coraline ) who tells MTV he's in development on a Deadworld feature film. "I've always looked for a good story and these guys have created stories that are so visual that you just see the movie," he says. "There's story that needs to be worked out and character that needs to be worked out, but you at least know what you're going to do." The series - about...
