Welcome To Samdalri Climbs Viewership Ratings; Song Kang Soars In Popularity As My Demon Becomes Most Buzzworthy Drama!(Photo Credit –IMDb)
2023 is almost ready to close its curtains, and it’s been nothing short of a magical year for K-fanatics. December, in particular, has offered a whole new range of K-dramas, which have once again ignited a global frenzy around Hallyuwave. If we look at weekend dramas other than My Demon and Park’s Marriage Contract, Welcome to Samdalri has become a fan favorite, soaring in the ranking chart. Joining the Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun starrer are Live Your Own Life and Maestra: Strings of Truth, with both dramas achieving new viewership ratings.
While many dramas have captured fans’ hearts this month, My Demon and Welcome to Samdalri are giving neck-to-neck competition to each other. Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung’s supernatural rom-com managed to emerge victorious,...

Over the past few years, I have become heavily immersed in K-content and K-dramas on a personal and professional level. Many hours have been spent watching the same perfectly executed tropes in various genres, from crime thrillers to romance K-dramas. Some dramas have won my heart and become favorites, like the teen romance True Beauty. But there is no denying that not all K-dramas were spectacular. K-dramas like Inspector Koo and a few others did not hold my interest and were unfinished.
Unfinished K-dramas ‘Inspector Koo,’ ‘Forecasting Love and Weather,’ and ‘Bad and Crazy’ | via Jtbc ‘Inspector Koo’ lacked the riveting edge of a murder mystery
It is not often that a crime K-drama has a female character as the heinous killer. The 2021 Netflix K-drama Inspector Koo made me excited as two female actors would lead the storyline. The storyline had a fun quirkiness that seemed like a good investment.

The Pitch: Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy is an unofficial, yet highly regarded series of neo-noir films centered around, you guessed it, protagonists seeking vengeance for something that has happened to them. With "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," he crafted a story about two men's intersecting desire for revenge, and with "Oldboy," he introduced a wronged man that ends up falling down a path of inner and outer destruction. "Lady Vengeance," his 2006 trilogy concluder, is similar to these movies in a lot of ways. Lee Geum-ja (Lee Young-ae) has been released from prison after 13 years for a crime she didn't commit. When director Park Chan-wook’s “Oldboy” won the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival in 2004, this event not only marked an important point in is career, as he would even venture to Hollywood, but also a turning point for the South-Korean film industry as a whole, with many genre entries from then on carrying the undeniable mark from that movie. Perhaps this is also the reason the other entries of the “Vengeance”-trilogy are sometimes forgotten or ignored, which is especially saddening in the case of its conclusion, “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” – a feature not only showing a different shade to the overall topic of revenge, but also arguably one of the finest works of the director.
Regarding visuals, “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” (or just “Lady Vengeance” in some regions) returns the director’s predilection towards artistic and creative patterns, mazes and elaborate hints, hidden within the smallest of details.

Charlize Theron has been talking up a remake of Park Chan-wook’s revenge thriller “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” as far back as 2008, so it probably comes as no surprise to anyone that she’s now officially committed to the film. The remake is now moving along, and has landed financing and a writer in “The Departed’s” William Monahan. “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance”, like Park’s other two films in his “vengeance” trilogy (including “Oldboy” and “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance”), have been on the remake block for years now, with “Oldboy” just getting under way with Josh Brolin starring and Spike Lee directing. “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance”, meanwhile, is still idling in development hell. Says Monahan about adapting the highly regarded thriller: This will be very American and very unexpected. Park is a genius; it¹s the Everest of adaptations and I’ve got blood in my teeth to do it.

Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to the worthwhile movies streaming online via Netflix Instant Watch. This week we look at alternatives to Our Idiot Brother, Colombiana and Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark!
This week there’s a dark theme lurking in theaters, where three innocents will have to confront some intense drama. Be it sneering sisters, creepy creatures or a painful past, these protagonists journeys are punctuated with poignancy and shouting!
Paul Rudd stars as the title moron, the good-natured but naïve Ned, who becomes a burden on his three sisters (Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel) after he’s busted selling dope to a cop. Adam Scott, Rashida Jones and Steve Coogan co-star in this Sundance-adored family-comedy, directed by Jesse Peretz.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm meets Korean TV drama" could be the tagline for E J-yong's delightful Actresses, a semi-improvised comedy/drama featuring a sextet of actresses - Yoon Yeo-jeong (A Good Lawyer's Wife, The President's Last Bang, The Housemaid), Lee Mi-sook (An Affair, Untold Scandal, Hellcats), Choi Ji-woo (Winter Sonata, The Romantic President, Everybody Has Secrets), Ko Hyun-jung (Woman on the Beach, Like You Know It All), Kim Min-hee (Hellcats), and Kim Ok-vin (Dasepo Naughty Girls, Thirst) - all "playing themselves." (I'll explain the quotes later.) The entire film takes place during a Vogue fashion shoot on Christmas Eve, teasing out the camaraderie and conflicts that arise among these strong women with equally strong egos. The action plays out in near-real time, faux-documentary style. The actresses are a cross-section of different generations: Kim Ok-vin and Kim Min-hee are the youngest, in their 20's...

Chicago – Park Chan-wook’s “Vengeance Trilogy” stands as one of the most essential cinematic achievements of the new millennium and should be seen anyone who dares call himself a movie fan. The three thematically linked films (although not sequels in a traditional sense) — “Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance,” “Oldboy,” and “Lady Vengeance” — have been collected in a gorgeous, extras-packed, simply spectacular release from Palisades Tartan that is now available to all after a limited exclusive deal with Best Buy for the last few months. If you haven’t already, buy it. Now.

And that’s not even taking into account the quality of these remarkable films that serve as a modern commentary on the blindness of vengeance.

Another Tuesday coming up means another week of collecting and watching awesome movies that have hit shelves at your local video store. Here’s what’s good, okay and horrible:
Grab ‘Em Right Away:
Vengeance Trilogy Bluray
Directed by: Park Chan-Wook
Written by: Park Chan-Wook
Starring: Min-sik Choi, Yeong-ae Lee & Kang-ho Song
Why should you buy this? Because it’s without a doubt the greatest revenge trilogy ever made. Made up of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, each film does its best to surpass its previous installment and succeeds. Even though none of the films have recurring characters, the universal theme keeps everything on the same playing field rather brilliantly. Chan-wook has one of the most demented and twisted minds in cinema. His films have such a unique style visually and narratively, upped by brilliant and satisfying endings you can’t help but love.

This is one of those that slipped in here and mistakenly was filed away in the wrong folder for a bit. Even though the news isn't super-fresh, we'd be doing a disservice not to point this one out, as Fango Fiends and fans of International Frights will definitely want to add this to their Chopping List when November 24th rolls around.
From Palisades Tartan:
You’ve been asking, we’ve been planning and this November Palisades Tartan will release the most exciting, impressive and comprehensive Vengeance Trilogy box-set the world has ever seen! Featuring 8-discs and more special features then any other set on the planet (including the Korean version), celebrity essays as well as a few surprises, Palisades Tartan will release Park Chan-Wook’s Vengeance Trilogy November 24th in DVD stores across the country.
Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance is the first film in Park Chan-Wook’s acclaimed Vengeance trilogy.

One could argue half of the merit (or blame) for starting the Korean Wave, the one which made money anyway, goes to Bae Yong-Joon and his 겨울연가 (Winter Sonata). It sent a nation of okasan into Showa nostalgia, purging their wallets at the first sight of anything Yonsama-related, be it films or accessories like Pantene Pro-v or white scarves. But the other half goes certainly to Lee Byung-Hoon’s sageuk 대장금 (Dae Jang Geum). This jewel in the palace not only recorded humongous ratings of over 50% at home, it traveled anywhere from Asia (a huge hit in Japan and Hong Kong), the Us and now even Europe and Iran, where the guy reading the Quran on TV is complaining of unfair competition from Lee Young-Ae and Co. But they couldn’t stop there, could they? Oh yes. A film will be made.

- Park Chan-wook proves once again he is both a visionary – and re-visionary – filmmaker with his latest work, a philosophical meditation on politics, religion, revenge, feminism, violence and redemption. Lady Vengeance is the concluding film in Chan-wook’s “Vengeance Trilogy,” which began in 2002 with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and continued the following year with Oldboy, the winner of the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes film festival as well as an enormous commercial success (Min-Sik Choi, who played the leading role in Oldboy, again collaborates with Chan-wook, this time as a sociopathic school teacher and the film’s villain). These three films make up a trilogy not in the sense of The Matrix or Lord of the Rings films, but more along the lines of Sergio Leone’s “Man with No Name” films (A Fistfull of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly) or even
