The disturbing thriller “Club Zero” that played at Cannes will divide audiences and critics with a scene of a teen eating vomit, but director Jessica Hausner gets one crucial thing right: It starts with a trigger warning for attendees, stating that the film features scenes regarding eating disorders. Of course, there will be many opinions on the auteur’s execution and theme, but in the same way her villainous lead character promotes “conscious eating,” Hausner delivered a “conscious warning.”
This practice should become the norm for content, whether movies or television. Not only should an advisory be shown at the beginning, but marketing departments should brainstorm ways to include it on posters, trailers and other campaigns. We, and studios, cannot rely solely on the MPAA rating system to inform viewers of brutal scenes that could be triggering. “Club Zero” involves scenes and topics of bulimia, while many other films and...

Now, here’s some “end of the year” old-school Hollywood spectacle-blockbuster “award fodder”. It takes place over 600 years ago, a true-life medieval tale set in “days of old, when knights were bold”. And it turns out those armored warriors were a lot like folks today. There are issues at the heart of this story that still resonate, even dominating the current debates and elections. Yes, this has lots of swordplay, but inflated egos fuel the flames of deadly combat. And the end result is helmed by a director known for historical epics like Gladiator, though many forget they he also was behind the camera on Thelma And Louise. Add a trio of screenwriters which includes actors, directors, and producers and you...

Prestige period filmmaking rarely sizzles like "The Last Duel." Ridley Scott, master of high-budget history, is mercifully in "Gladiator" form rather than "Kingdom of Heaven" with his latest medieval movie. All is as it should be here: stunning swordfights, dazzling duels, nimble narrativization, and psychologically piercing performances from the trio of leads.
The film's accomplishments teeter precariously on the edge of sensitive gender politics given the subject matter. Jodie Comer's Marguerite presents a rarity: a 14th century example of a woman charging rape against a man, Adam Driver's Jacques LeGris. When faced with this divulgence from his wife, Matt Damon's...

If you examine Ridley Scott’s filmography, the 83-year-old director has never made the same film twice: Following his breakout with the peerlessly suspenseful sci-fi thriller “Alien,” he traded aliens for alienation in “Blade Runner,” followed by explorations of myriad genres in films like “Thelma & Louise,” “Hannibal,” “Robin Hood,” and “The Martian.”
The whodunnit makes it into his filmography with “The Last Duel”: Adapting Eric Jager’s 2004 non-fiction book with screenwriters Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Nicole Holofcener, Scott spins a medieval yarn that is by turns gruesome, grotesque, gorgeous, and inconsistent.
The Hundred Years’ War is ravaging France, and knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon) has been away fighting for nearly a year. When Jean returns from battle, he’s perplexed and completely unaware of what’s happened to his wife Marguerite; she claims to have been raped by his best friend and fellow knight, Jacques LeGris (Adam Driver...

“I do consider myself a feminist,” said Ben Affleck to the Venice Film Festival press corps this afternoon. The actor was in town with to talk about his latest pic The Last Duel, along with co-stars Matt Damon and Jodie Comer, director Ridley Scott and co-writer Nicole Holofcener about the 14th century title, based on the book by Eric Jager, which is screening out of competition at the festival tonight.
“The movie principally was really exciting to me because of the character of Marguerite [played by Comer],” said Affleck. “Her extraordinary strength and bravery seemed very obvious when I read the book.”
He added: “This is a true story, one that people didn’t know. This is an incredible woman from history who is an early-known recorded person who spoke out against a powerful man who assaulted her. Naturally, that seemed relevant and also incredibly thrilling, and a story that could generate a...

Ridley Scott is setting up his next film project, which is called The Last Duel. The film is based on a true revenge story that was told in a novel by Eric Jager. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will star in the film and they also wrote the script with Nicole Holofcener.
This is the first script that Damon and Affleck have collaborated on since their Oscar winning work on Good Will Hunting. It’s actually pretty awesome to see these two guys have written another script and that they will re-team on the big screen.
According to Deadline, the revenge story is a period piece that follows two best friends, who will be played by Damon and Affleck. “One goes to war and returns to discover the other has raped the soldier’s wife. No one will believe the woman, and the soldier appeals to the king of France...
