didn't become a semi-household name until his twilight years as
Uncle Leo on TV's Seinfeld (1989).
Son of a Jewish grocer in the Bronx. Studied at City College in New York, graduating at the age of 19. Served with the U.S. Army in China, Burma and India during World War II.
