Exclusive: It’s a tough task to re-invent Ben-Hur for the big screen. After all, the 1959 classic is one of the most loved films of all time. But that is exactly what screenwriter Keith Clarke decided to do. After researching subjects for a possible film about both the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the unrest in Belfast, Clarke and his wife, producer Joni Levin, were looking for a story about forgiveness. In their research on that project, they were dismayed to find so…...

Read More: Will MGM's Return to 'Ben-Hur' Stand Up to the Oscar Winner? Release date changes are always a cause for speculation, and while no specific reasons for this delay has been made, MGM and Paramount have confirmed that their "Ben-Hur" remake will be moved from February 26 to August 12, 2016. The change could be the result of a number of factors, from providing more time to work on special effects to realizing the potential blockbuster might play better in the summer movie season, though it could also indicate some trouble behind the scenes. The remake is directed by "Wanted" filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov and has a screenplay by Keith Clarke, with revisions by Oscar winner and executive producer John Ridley ("12 Years A Slave"). If you were looking forward to seeing an updated version of the classic Ben-Hur story on the big screen, then you'll be happy to hear that principal photography has officially started on the epic, with a more full cast last revealed as well. Come inside to see.
I'm honestly not sure what to think about a Ben-Hur remake. Done correctly, it could be pretty cool and a great way to introduce a new generation to this story. It also has a good chance of sucking, but that's the risk you take with any remake. Either way, I tend to hold off judgement until I've seen footage, which we've just taken a big step towards seeing as filming has officially started:

Exclusive: Pedro Pascal, who made an indelible impression on the last season of HBO’s Game Of Thrones, is in talks to play Pontius Pilate in the Timur Bekmambetov-directed Ben-Hur remake at MGM and Paramount. In Game Of Thrones, Pascal played Oberyn Martell (also called the Red Viper of Dorne), who volunteered to fight a death battle in the arena to win the freedom of accused king killer Tyrion Lannister. The Viper engaged in battle with The Mountain, a brutish warrior who years before had raped and murdered Oberyn’s sister. Oberyn had the brute dead to rights, but got a little careless and too close, and ended up on the wrong end of The Mountain’s crushing grip. But Pascal stayed around long enough to make a strong impression.
If talks with Pascal work out, he will join Jack Huston, as well as Toby Kebbell, Morgan Freeman and Gal Gadot in the film.

Exclusive: MGM and Paramount have found Ben-Hur. Exclusive: Gearing up to start production in Europe early next year, MGM, Paramount and Timur Bekmambetov have made their first formal casting in Ben-Hur. They’ve set Morgan Freeman to play the role of Ildarin, the man who teaches the slave Ben-Hur to become a champion-caliber chariot racer.
The studios are getting close to finding their Judah Ben-Hur and his friend-turned-bitter-rival Messala. I’ve reported that Tom Hiddleston was one of those being courted, and at this point it’s not clear if he will take part. They’ve set a February 26, 2016, release date on the epic remake, that is based more closely on the 1880 Lew Wallace novel Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ – the biggest-selling novel of its time until it was eclipsed by Gone With The Wind — than the 1959 William Wyler-directed film that starred Charlton Heston. Keith Clarke wrote the script and John Ridley did the rewrite.

Deadline is reporting that Timur Bekmabetov (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) is in talks to direct Ben-Hur for MGM. The studio was once teetering in the edge of failure, but thanks to the double whammy of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Skyfall, MGM finds itself flush with cash. They want to use some of those ducats to fund a remake of Ben-Hur.
The film will be based on the novel Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ, which was written in 1880 by Lew Wallace. The book was a best seller and was second only to the Bible. It was turned into a film in 1959 starring Charlton Heston and directed by William Wyler. There is also a silent film that came out in 1929.
Here’s a synopsis of the book courtesy of Barnes & Noble:

Exclusive: I can’t say definitively that the negotiations are going to work out, but MGM is in talks with Wanted helmer Timur Bekmambetov to helm Ben-Hur, a new adaptation of the 1880 Lew Wallace novel Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ, which in its time outsold every book but The Bible until it was eclipsed by Gone With The Wind. This all got set in motion after MGM bought a Ben-Hur spec by Keith Clarke (he scripted the Peter Weir-directed The Way Back), a package that came with Sean Daniel and Joni Levin attached to produce, and Clarke and Jason Brown exec producing. This happened last January, right after MGM got new funding and was flush with proceeds from the 007 pic Skyfall and The Hobbit. I have been chasing the possible deal with Bekmambetov for the past two weeks, and it seemed intriguing enough as another Biblical epic moving...

MGM is reportedly set to remake a classic. According to Deadline.com, the studio has plans to develop its 1959 classic, "Ben-Hur." Starring the late Charlton Heston, the epic "Ben-Hur" is credited with changing the aspirations of the film industry and inspiring current filmmakers, such as George Lucas.
While MGM released both the 1959 drama, as well as the 1925's "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ," the studio sold the rights to "Ben-Hur" to Ted Turner in the '80s. As Lew Wallace's 1880 novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" is public domain, the latest "Ben-Hur" that MGM is eyeing is a script that was written by Keith Clarke ("The Way Back"). Deadline reports Sean Daniel and Joni Levin have been tapped to produce the project, while Clarke will serve as executive producer with Jason Brown.

MGM has begun work on a new adaptation of Lew Wallace's 1880 novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ."
There has been at least two versions over the years, William Wyler's 1959 version starring Charlton Heston remains both the most famous adaptation, and one of the most famous films of all time.
Keith Clarke ("The Way Back") penned the spec script for this new version which is said to stick closer to Wallace's original novel. MGM sold the rights to the 1959 film back in the 1980s, but Wallace's novel is in the public domain.
The new version will shift the focus to the adult blood feud between Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur and Messala, the son of a Roman tax collector. The pair grow up best friends before the Roman Empire took control of Jerusalem.
Messala ultimately betrays his childhood friend and manipulates it so that Judah is sold into slavery.

Looks like Peter Weir’s film The Way Back will see a 2010 release. When the film premiered at the 37th Telluride Film Festival, A.O. Scott, of the New York Times wrote in early September:
The drama of human beings confronting the elemental power of nature figures in later work like “The Mosquito Coast” and “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” and also in his latest movie, “The Way Back.” … Mr. Weir’s style is stately, almost classical, and the astonishing story he has to tell in the new movie “about a group of men who escaped from a Soviet Labor camp in 1941 and walked from Siberia to India. has an old-fashioned gravity and grandeur. There are fine performances from Ed Harris, Saoirse Ronan and Jim Sturgess as Janusz, the Polish prisoner who leads the trek toward freedom, and breathtaking images of tundra, desert forest and grassland.
