Patriots quarterback and five-time Super Bowl champ Tom Brady had some tough competition on the field Friday — his 9-year-old son Jack!

Held at Harvard Stadium in Allston, Massachusetts, the Tom Brady Best Buddies Football Challenge bought together Brady and fellow Patriots like Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola for two hours of competition.

Backstreet's back, alright! The Backstreet Boys made an incredible appearance on this week's episode of The Bachelor.
While it wasn't the first time the ABC series has recruited celebs, something about Bsb's cameo has left us inspired.
So here's everything you need to know about the drama of Monday's "Larger than Life" episode, as told through Backstreet Boys songs:
Shape of My… Heart?
Corinne definitely had a plan to show Nick the shape of her something!
The 24-year-old Miami native announced that she wanted to "get even more romantic with Nick, and explore each other sexually," before stealing Nick away during the cocktail party to squeeze whipped cream into each other's mouths. But when Nick wasn't so receptive to her advances -- "I'm trying to appreciate everything that is Corinne while still being respectful of the other women in the house," he later told the camera -- Corinne had a meltdown and decided to sleep through the rose...

Nick may have a lot of explaining (and groveling) to do after the women learn he hooked up with Liz, but it's season 21 of The Bachelor and group dates must go on. Seven of the women get to rock their bodies because the Backstreet Boys are back, alright! The uber-popular boy band helps Nick make it a memorable date as the women and their dream guy prepare to take the stage. Nick also recruits former Olympians Carl Lewis, Allyson Felix and Michelle Carter to train seven bachelorettes for the first-ever "Nickathalon" where they'll compete for the Bachelor's attention. But these events have have a romantic twist.

Michael Phelps is officially the most decorated Olympian of all time. After capturing his 22nd gold medal (and 26th overall) in the 200-meter individual medley on Thursday, Phelps collected his 13th individual event win, becoming the athlete with most individual event wins since 152 B.C. The previous titleholder was Leonidas of Rhodes, who won 12 individual events over four Olympics. Leonidas garnered his last three golds in the stadion (a 200-meter sprint), the diaulos (a 400-meter run) and the hoplite race (a run performed while wearing armor). In addition, Thursday's 200-meter individual medley victory was Phelps' fourth consecutive win in that discipline.

The world may be familiar with the story of Olympic athlete Jesse Owens, the African-American track and field star who won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games, possibly because of the recent feature film about his triumph entitled “Race,” starring Stephan James. However, the world might not know about the 17 other African American athletes who also competed in 1936. The new documentary “Olympic Pride, American Prejudice” tells the story of those forgotten 17 athletes and how they defied Jim Crow and Adolf Hitler by demonstrating the myth of white supremacy. Though their stories might not be well known, they are heroes in their own right, and their presence on the world stage was an important precursor to the American Civil Rights Movement.

In the summer of 1989, while Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" was sounding a thunderclap in cinemas, a troupe of largely black actors and comedians came together on a Fox sound stage in Century City to produce a sketch comedy show aimed at servicing a minority point of view that had been underrepresented by the medium. With producer Keenen Ivory Wayans at the helm, fresh off the success of his 1988 Blaxploitation parody film "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka," eight individuals — a then-unknown Jim Carrey along with Kelly Coffield, Kim Coles, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, T'Keyah "Crystal" Keymáh and Wayans' siblings Damon and Kim — filmed the first episodes of "In Living Color." The show debuted on April 15, 1990, and 25 years later, Damon Wayans can't help but remember first and foremost that he had hair back then. "I remember the pain of getting fired from 'Saturday Night Live' and feeling that I needed redemption,...

With all the good Godzilla news coming out this past year, it was only a matter of time before something crappy hit the wire. As it turns out, franchise star Akira Takarada's cameo has been omitted from the theatrical cut of the film.

March is about to get mad.
Beginning tonight, sports fans (and a lot of non-sports fans) will spend most waking hours pouring over brackets and RPIs, trying to figure out who will be the next Davidson or Lehigh, and watching more TruTV over 3 weeks than they will rest of the year combined.
Espn is smartly capitalizing on the momentum of March Madness by debuting its latest 30 for 30 documentary on Sunday at 9 p.m. Est, following its annual Bracketology special. For the uninitiated, the 30 for 30 docs series began in late 2009. Its mission: shine a light on incredible, real-life sports stories that might not have received the coverage they deserved (or have faded with time for whatever reason). Requiem for the Big East—Sunday’s special—is the 60th feature-length 30 for 30 documentary. Gaming is a medium closely linked with the film industry thanks to the similarities of watching characters interact with their manufactured surroundings. Unlike film, where you’re set on rails on a scripted journey, games give you control of the characters while heavily involving you on the digitally carved path.
An epic film can run well into the bum-numbing three hour bracket, but a video game will be lambasted if it dared to register a similar run time. That’s partly due to the price considering a video game costs four times as much as a cinema ticket (depending where you live) so we expect, nay, demand a title register at least 10-12 hours.
There are others in the world where a short runtime on their beloved pastime has no anger inducing convulsions; in actual fact they crave it.
They are known as Speedrunners. They yearn for the speed of Usain Bolt,...

Folk singer James Taylor, a Boston native, was asked to sing The Star-Spangled Banner for the second World Series game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. And while he pretty much did a beautiful job, he got sliiiiightly confused right at the start.
"Oh beautiful .... o say can you see," starts Taylor. Oops.
He's in good company, though. Many a National Anthem singer has screwed up the words, some of the most famous of which are below -- Christina Aguilera at the Super Bowl, Carl Lewis and then Cuba Gooding Sr. at NBA games, and Michael Bolton at an Mlb game.
Though to be fair, Carl Lewis seemed to know the words. It was just so, so bad.

25 years after the game-changing events of the 1988 Summer Olympics in which Ben Johnson was stripped of his 100m Gold medal for failing a drug test, the use of banned substances in sport is more rampant than ever. On Monday evening, Milkha Singh got a surprise call from American star-runner Carl Lewis. Lewis had seen the Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and was deeply moved by the film. Says a source from the film's team, "Carl Lewis saw the film in the Us. Though they are both superstars in their own countries, Carl and Milkha Singh had never spoken before. Carl somehow got hold of Milkhaji's Chandigarh number. The call was completely unexpected. Milkhaji was deeply moved by this unexpected gesture of appreciation from a fellow-athlete from so far away." Confirming the story, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra says, "Yes, Carl Lewis indeed rang up Milkha Singh after seeing the film.

Japan has been a source of endless entertainment and inspiration for our western culture, with the obvious being movies like The Ring or Battle Royale (which is thought by many to be one of the inspirations behind the Hunger Games series). Even video games such as Zelda and Final Fantasy have raised the bar for what is expected. Then we have the less obvious TV shows such as Wipeout and Hole In The Wall – even the format for Dragon’s Den is taken from a Japanese show!
Finally, we have some items that are just so outrageous that it sadly looks like they won’t be influencing our lives anytime soon. This article, however, is a homage to them. Let’s take a look at 10 of the weird, wonderful and most insane Japanese video games of all time.

Almost quarter of a century after being disqualified from the Seoul Olympics after one of the biggest scandals in Olympic history, sprinter Ben Johnson is hoping to make his mark in the movies. He has plans for a biopic which will tell the story of his Jamaican childhood, his great rivalry with Carl Lewis, and of his rise and very sudden fall as a sports star. In the meantime, he is one of the participants in British director Daniel Gordon's excellent new feature documentary 9.79*, which looks at the 100-metre final in Seoul from the perspective of all eight athletes who competed in it. Every Olympics needs its own old-school-versus-new-school controversy, and at the 2012 Games we've already seen feuds between Hope Solo and Brandi Chastain and the new Dream Team versus Old Dream Team. Yohan Blake of Jamaica snags the silver with a time of 9.75 seconds, and Justin Gatlin of the United States wins the bronze with a time of 9.79 seconds. Tyson Gay and Ryan Bailey of the United States finish fourth (9.80) and fifth (9.88) respectively.
Jamaica also won the gold for the women's 100-meter dash on Saturday when Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price bested her competitors.

From vegetarian athletes and grey panthers to the truth about Asma Assad
Diet of champions
Why the amazement that British cycling medal winner Lizzie Armitstead is vegetarian? Saying no to meat never did Carl Lewis any harm – he turned vegan shortly before breaking the 100m record in 1991.
Walk like a panther
A survey of older people suggests that they would rather be called "grey panthers" than OAPs. What's happened? Are they suddenly all channeling Alan Partridge? Grrr.
Going down
Business leaders are calling for interest rates to be cut to zero. Negative rates could be next ... although paying the banks to look after our savings might be a hard sell.
First lady of hell
Joan Juliet Buck, author of Vogue's infamous profile of Asma Assad, has broken her silence with a mea culpa for Newsweek that offers rather more sinister insights into "the devil and his wife".

Michelle Obama had some inspirational words for U.S. Olympians on Friday (July 27) ahead of the opening of the London games.
"I'm so inspired by you and am in awe of what you all have achieved ... Try to have fun; try to breathe a little," she says.
The first lady held court on the lawn of stately Winfield House, transforming the London landmark into an enormous playground from which she preached the message of her campaign for healthier living. Currently home to the U.S. Ambassador, Winfield House is a mansion set on 12 acres of grounds in Regent's Park and the second-largest private garden in London behind only Buckingham Palace.
"You know, you are not born an Olympian,'' Obama says, addressing the crowd alongside current and former athletes including Brandi Chastain, Grant Hill, Carl Lewis, Shawn Johnson, Teresa Edwards, Dikembe Mutombo and Dana Torres. "Many of them started out just like you.

"Beyond proud" is how Michelle Obama told U.S. Olympians she felt while meeting with them on Friday morning, as the world awaits the evening's opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Over breakfast at an east London sports center with some of Team USA - including women's basketball players, fencing competitors and members of the track and field squad - the First Lady praised the inspiration they provide to those watching back home. "Some of my fondest memories growing up and as an adult involve watching the Olympics on TV," Mrs. Obama told them. "My family would sit together for...

Country singer Luke Bryan is apologizing to anyone who was offended by his writing words to the National Anthem on his hand when he sung the difficult song at baseball's Major League All-Star game on Monday (July 10).
"I had a few keys words written down to insure myself that I wouldn't mess up. I just wanted to do my best. I promise it was from the heart," writes Bryan in a tweeted apology. "If I offended anyone with my approach I sincerely apologize. Anytime I sing the anthem it is an honor and my heart beats out of my chest."
Bryan had been criticized when it became obvious he was reading some of the song's words off his hand. Some were so offended they called the singer "unpatriotic."
"Luke Bryan's version of the national anthem @ the All-Star game last night was an epic fail. He needs to learn respect & remember the lyrics!

We look back at the most infamous renditions of 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'
By James Montgomery
The Fray perform the national anthem before the 2012 Ncaa National Championship game
Photo: Getty Images
It seems odd that relaxed-khaki rockers the Fray would inspire acrimony of any sort (unless you hate "Grey's Anatomy"), but that's exactly what's happened following their performance of the national anthem at Monday night's Ncaa national championship basketball game.
To be honest, we didn't think it was that bad, but critics have been savaging the band for their jangly spin on "The Star-Spangled Banner," calling it everything from "dreadful" to "acoustic, emo and mercifully quick" ( two assessments that could equally have been applied to the actual championship game, now that we think of it).
And while they may not be fair, those criticisms automatically add the Fray to the rather lengthy list of truly terrible national anthem performances. From crotch-grabbing comediennes to winded,...

Since Steven Tyler performed a cat-scratch rendition of the national anthem at yesterday’s Afc Championship game, the performance has gone viral and been met with an Internet response about as hospitable as New England Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick’s “What’s that smell?” face. Which brings to our attention for the trillionth time that, Man, that song is tricky. Since Francis Scott Key penned the rousing lyrics in 1814, many have been felled by its one-and-a-half-octave range and flummoxing verbiage (“O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming”? That’s old-time speak!). For fairness, I’ve mainly stuck...

The most exciting rumor I’ve heard is of the re-invigorated Jesse Owens biopic. Owens was a spectacular all-around athlete whose presence at Hitler’s Olympic games in Berlin in 1936 infuriated the Fuehrer. Blacks were thought by the Nazis to be an inferior race but Owens bested Hitler’s Aryan “supermen,” winning four gold medals in a single Olympiad, a feat not equaled until Carl Lewis did it in Los Angeles in 1984. Wags place a favorite actor of ours, Anthony Mackie, playing Owens though this project has been off-again, on-again for a few years now. The concept alone fairly reeks of Oscars.
Kirby Dick has another compelling documentary here called The Invisible War. It chronicles the horrifying statistics of the incidence of rape in the U.S. military, of both men and women, and the complete lack of resource, of recompense, and of justice for those who are the victims.

Veteran broadcaster Lee Corso made a decidedly amateur move when he uttered one of those words you can't say on TV on Saturday (Nov. 19).
During a live broadcast of Espn's "College GameDay," the 76-year-old Corso was ready to announce his pick to win the Smu vs. University of Houston game. The prop-happy analyst first picked up a Uh megaphone before saying "F*** it" and then donning the giant Houston Cougar costume.
The slip caught Corso's sidekicks Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and guest Carl Lewis completely off guard. The three began laughing uncontrollably.
"Glad there's a delay," Lewis says. The only problem...there isn't one.
Fowler follows with, "Shame on you. Wash that mouth out."
About 30 minutes later, Corso issued the requisite apology.
"Earlier today on 'College GameDay' while picking the Smu-Houston game I got a bit excited and used an expletive that I shouldn't have used. I apologize and can promise it won't happen again,...

Hooray for America! This July 4th is an especially juicy one, considering the fact that equality is spreading even further into the national fabric, and that we finally smoked Osama Bin Laden out of his hole, or whatever George W. Bush said he would do to Osama Bin Laden, but didn’t (#missionaccomplished). ‘Tis also the season for The Star Spangled Banner, that deliciously American tune that goes best with pride, patriotism, and Hot Dogs Mmmmm. And although we all love the song, it’s not the easiest tune to sing (just ask Christina Agiulera, #Boooingggg!!!), which is why we’ve culled for you the Weirdest Star Spangled Banner Covers Ever! Hand Farts!!! Kazoos!!!! Whitney/Mariah/Christina-style (via Maya Rudolph on Saturday Night Live) She Forgot The Words!!! So Did She!!! On Helium!!! Bad Cop!!! Sung By A Parrot Named Boozle!!! On A Violin Made Out Of A Baseball Bat?...

If you had told me before the season began that Phillip Sheppard would end up in second place on Survivor: Redemption Island, I would have called you crazy. Crazy like Phillip Sheppard! But somehow, someway, the Stealth R Us point person ended up as runner-up. I talked with Philip all about his unlikely journey, his feelings about his castmates, and his plans for the future, which, quite frankly, are spectacular. Read on after the jump to enjoy for yourself.

American athlete Carl Lewis (D) may have won medals in the Olympics in track and field events, but he was found not qualified to run for the New Jersey state senate on Tuesday.
Lewis, who won nine gold medals in four summer games, sought a seat in the New Jersey state Senate for the 8th legislative district. However, New Jersey Lt. Governor and Secretary of State Kim Guadagno (R) ruled that Lewis did not meet residency requirements and ordered his name stricken from the primary ballot.
Democrats drafted Lewis against Republican bet Sen. Dawn Addiego in Burlington country. But Guadagno - a Republican - said Lewis did not have the mandated four-year residency requirement. The athlete grew up in New Jersey, but left the state when he went to college.
Republicans challenged Lewis's eligibility because he even voted recently in California. Guadagno's decision reversed a previous ruling by an administrative...

If you're an American over the age of 30 or a fan of track and field, you know that Carl Lewis is simply one of the most amazing athletes to ever walk the Earth.
Winner of 10 Olympic medals, the last in 1996 at the age of 35, and 10 World Championship medals, he was named Athlete of the Year by Track and Field News in 1982, 1983 and 1984. Lewis set world records in the 100 m, 4 x 100 m and 4 x 200 m relays and his world record in the indoor long jump has stood since 1984. His 65 consecutive victories in the long jump achieved over a span of 10 years is one of the sport's longest undefeated streaks.
Lewis became a household name at the Los Angeles games in 1984 when he won four gold medals, equaling the immortal Jesse Owens. He was a physical marvel.
Unfortunately, he had to retire someday and things have been less glorious since then.

Sony has made a low-figure development buy for the English-language remake rights to Austrian helmer Benjamin Heisenberg's Der Rauber. We're not sure if the new film will be going by the simple title of The Robber, but we do know that Spider-Man producer Laura Ziskin is heading the project. Gist: Obviously the remake won't attempt to use the true story nature of the original or stick close to the original source material, but as far as double persona angle, they'll have no choice to think a long-distance version of Carl Lewis on U.S soil. The original was about Johann Rettenberger, a successful marathon runner and a serial bank robber. Soberly and precisely he measures his heart rate, strain, stamina and efficiency – both during training runs and bank raids, from which, concealed beneath a ludicrous mask and armed with a pump gun, he takes flight from the police. He lives,...
