Another missing girl has Detective Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen) on the move while the world continues to turn a blind eye. This time it isn’t an aboriginal, though, the aftermath of his work in Mystery Road culminating in a shootout with everyone dead but he a distant memory. The case that has him traveling to Goldstone concerns a young Chinese girl, her place in the desert a curiosity Jay cannot ignore. Haunted by demons that go much farther back than anything writer/director Ivan Sen introduced in his last installment, Swan is taking to the bottle and in desperate need of a win to repair his damaged soul. Unfortunately for him it doesn’t appear anyone in this desolate mining town is able—or willing—to provide assistance.
We reunite with Jay piss drunk and behind the wheel as Goldstone’s solitary law enforcement agent (Alex Russell‘s Josh) approaches.

You just have to love end of year lists. Well, you don’t have to I suppose, but they are good fun to compile. Of course, they do get complicated with regards to the actual official release date. In fact it was just last week that myself and the hairy one Justin Laliberty were discussing this very thing. So, when it comes to my list the films have had either theatrical, DVD/Blu-ray (first time and not re-issues) releases or have yet to have releases outside of screeners or a festival showing.
With all that being said, below are my favorite non-horror films of 2011. Any quotes are taken from my reviews (if I reviewed them).
10. Red Hill

Kane Hodder is a legend in the horror biz, with more on-screen kills than you could count. He also wore a hockey mask more than most Canadians do when he portrayed bloodthirsty murder machine Jason Voorhees in four "Friday the 13th" installments, a series record. (His personal favorite kill is the infamous "sleeping bag against a tree" scene.)
Recently Hodder has found a new avenue for his particular brand of personal expression as deformed maniac Victor Crowley in the "Hatchet" series. He will begin shooting "Hatchet 3" early next year, and, in his words, is "anxious to get back in that Victor makeup and kill some motherf***ers."
For all the nightmares he's given people over the years, there are a few fright flicks that have given Hodder the shivers as well. After reading through his terrific new autobiography "Unmasked: The True Life Story of The World’s Most Prolific Cinematic Killer,...

On the run for 40 years, Wright's tale has what it takes for screen success. But such storytelling needs a conscientious approach
If the story of George Wright, the convicted murderer captured this week in Portugal after 40 years on the run, has not yet been optioned by an enterprising producer, then the film industry has really missed a trick. From a cinematic storytelling perspective, this tale has everything. Wright, who had participated in a spree of armed robberies, was imprisoned for the murder of the service station owner Walter Patterson in 1962, only to escape from the Bayside state prison farm in Leesburg, New Jersey, in 1970. Already you've got the heist movie and the prison break-out movie covered. That's a big market: expressed in mathematical terms the potential audience would be (fans of Bonnie and Clyde) + (fans of The Shawshank Redemption). And only a fool would rule out defenders of Buster.
But there's more.

What the hell has happened to romantic comedies? Once upon a time we had Walter Matthau and Ingrid Bergman co-starring in Cactus Flower from a screenplay by Ial Diamond. Now we get Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in a barely recognisable remake, the very title of which makes me want to stick pins in my eyes and pour glue in my ears.
In Just Go With It (2011, Sony, 12), Sandler plays an allegedly lovable plastic surgeon who discovers that he can bed more women by wearing a wedding ring. Having duly deceived the girl of his dreams (Brooklyn Decker, playing a life-size Barbie doll), he must enlist amenable assistant (Jennifer Aniston) to pretend to be his estranged wife in order to further the romantic ruse.

Considering the similar historical trajectory to the United States I’ve always wondered why Australian film-makers didn’t produce more Westerns. The obvious answer of course is that as a genre the Western is not in vogue as it once was but the miniscule volume of braves that have stampeded down under over the years contain a modest list of intriguing, intelligent and gripping films – from the brutal The Proposition (2005) to the angry The Chant Of Jimmy Blacksmith (1978) or the cultish Mad Dog Morgan (1976) you’d think that some enterprising antipodean producers would be anxious to exploit their countries history for the chtonic dollar. Similarly potent themes are ripe for exploration whether they are framed by Monument Valley or Ayers Rock, from the settlers uncertain relationship with the indigenous people, the birth of a new civilisation amidst a savage and inhospitable wilderness,...

Attack The Block (15)
(Joe Cornish, 2011, UK) John Boyega, Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker. 88 mins
More Critters than Cloverfield, this alien-invasion movie is modest in scale and ambition but makes up for it in local flavour. The setting is south London – Brit cinema's default "ghetto" location, bruv – where sharp-toothed ETs come to regret messing with the hoodies, who team up with their recent victim and the upstairs drug dealer to defend their manor. It's no Shaun Of The Dead, but it's up-to-date and fitfully entertaining, and there's at least some social grit beneath the down-with-the-kids comedy.
A Screaming Man (PG)
(Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, 2010, Cha/Fra/Bel) Youssouf Djaoro, Dioucounda Koma, Emile Abssolo M'Bo. 91 mins
Saying a great deal with few resources, this skillful Chadian drama finds weighty moral, global and generational concerns in the story of a swimming pool attendant and his son.
Love Like Poison (15)
(Katell Quillévéré, 2010, Fra) Clara Augarde, Lio, Stefano Cassetti.

You can always spot a western. Not in the obvious low-slung gun holster, wide brimmed cowboy hat, fist fight in a saloon kind of way, but more in the patented fundamentals of the hero alone, the stranger in a small town, out-gunned and out-manoeuvred, fighting injustice (or just fighting) with nothing but his wits, and a trusty sidearm. Or two. The western ideal also pays no attention to geography, or era, Clint Eastwood has basically been playing in westerns his entire career. Ok, maybe The Bridges of Madison County and Space Cowboys don’t quite fit the playbill, but it’s only a small stampede from The Man With No Name to Harry Callahan or Walt Kowalski.

Red Hill
Stars: Ryan Kwanten, Steve Bisley, Tommy Lewis | Written and Directed by Patrick Hughes
Australian police officer Shane Cooper moves to the middle of nowhere with his pregnant wife to get away from the stress and strain of city life. What he gets is anything but… When local TV news reports that convicted killer Jimmy Conway has escaped from jail, all hell breaks lose. Revenge just rode into town.
The first thing that strikes you about Red Hill is that it’s a Western. I don’t mean a modern Western, or a modern thriller with Western overtones, I mean it’s a Western. Horses, a small rickety town, a main street perfect for sniping from rooftops, a trenchcoat-wearing killer intent on revenge. All the classic Western staples are present and correct. Small town Australia makes the perfect setting for a modern day Western, and I’m amazed nobody thought of it sooner.

Though True Grit gets to play the part of the big Western flick soaking in all the critical praise and award nominations, 2010 saw the release of another notable “Western” flick, and this one came from the increasingly promising Australian film scene. Red Hill tells the tale of a police officer moving into a quiet small town on the day a feared convict breaks out of prison and seeks vengeance on those who wronged him years before. Ryan Kwanten has had a number of small roles, plenty of forgettable ones, and then one or two that have let him make a name for himself. Red Hill firmly establishes Kwanten as an actor who can deliver a terrific performance when the material is up to snuff.

So the day has come for you folks to take home Costas Mandylor in the final chapter of the phenomenon that is Saw! Well, at least until the inevitable reboot. Even cooler...if the jolly red-suited fatman brought you a 3D television last month, you can watch this puppy in its gory 3D glory, too.
Another franchise that is buzzing this week is the video game sequel, Dead Space 2. In addition to the game itself, you can also bring home the collector's edition, the album soundtrack, a hardcover game guide, and an animated DVD movie. That should keep you busy for a while.
Oh yeah, there are a couple of other interesting titles with some familiar faces from "True Blood", "Angel", "Buffy", and even "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman".

Sometimes it does pay to take justice – and filmmaking – into your own hands. From frustration to success in 11 months, that’s what writer/producer/director/editor Patrick Hughes experienced with his contemporary revenge western Red Hill.
Red Hill came “from a place of frustration”; after writing a number of scripts and being attached to projects that fell over for different reasons, Patrick Hughes felt things were always out of his hands.
“Your first film is really scary because all you’re looking to do is to have an impact with audiences and impress the right people,” said Hughes.
Thinking about his favourite filmmakers – from Robert Rodriguez to his mate and now executive producer Greg McLean – he realised they had all mortgaged their house, raised private investment and shot their first film without having a distributor, so he decided to follow their steps and write a new script. There's nothing wrong with Patrick Hughes western thriller Red Hill, but there's nothing exceptional about it either. It's a throwback gunslinger flick set in the outback of Australia, with decent performances, a fairly boilerplate story that furls out well enough, and a moderate amount of shoot-em'-up violence. It's a solid effort, but it just feels so restrained and unexceptional it's hard to really get excited about it. While this might only be a second-cousin to the Blue-Tongue Films spirit, I'm so spoiled by the taught tension and intensity that when I see something that had every opportunity to flare up into brilliance but just doesn't, I'm nonplussed. It's the cinematic equivalent of an everyday hour long commute. There's no surprises, and whether you happen to hit a break in the traffic or it's bumper to bumper, you're still going to end up in the same general place, give or take 15 minutes.

"Red Hill"; with Ryan Kwanten, Steve Bisley and Tommy Lewis; directed by Patrick Hughes
By Lita Robinson - November 12, 2010
“Red Hill,” a new Australian thriller, forcibly reminded me of “No Country for Old Men.” A lone gunman busts out of prison and stalks his way back to the town where he was arrested intent on getting his long-awaited revenge. It’s like a stripped-down Eastwood picture; there’s crime, there’s killing, and in the end everyone gets their due.
The weird part about this film is that it stars Ryan Kwanten, best known for his role as Jason Stackhouse on HBO’s “True Blood.” His character in that show is certainly plucky and daring, but not exactly the brightest crayon in the box. In “Red Hill” his character, Shane Cooper, resembles Jason in many ways: he seems to be perpetually out of the loop, always in danger but never quite sure why.

Starring True Blood‘s Ryan Kwanten, Red Hill is a suspenseful modern-day Western that uses Australia’s dramatic and vast landscapes to stage a drama of frontier justice with an antagonist right out of Halloween-style horror film. Kwanten plays a city cop assigned to a small outback town where he intends to raise a baby with his very pregnant wife. But his move coincides with the escape of Jimmy Conway (Tom E. Lewis) from the local jail. The indigenous Jimmy was wronged years ago, and his brand of frontier justice consists of non-stop mayhem.
In my conversation with Hughes, he spoke about his film’s lack of resources — its low budget and short shooting schedule. It’s a mark of his talent that these limitations don’t show. Once the film kicks into gear it doesn’t stop, throwing in chases, plenty of gunplay, and lots of blood spilled under the cold Australian moon.

"Red Hill" is a movie smoothie: a whole bunch of different movies blended together in one mixture that combines the tropes of several genres. Take a couple parts American Western, throw in a handful of 80s slasher film, a dash of 70s revenge and vigilante movies, and sprinkle in some racial injustice as the crunchy granola social commentary on top. In movies like this, as with smoothies, it's all about the recipe: balancing out all the ingredients so they work in harmony and your concoction isn't too sweet or gritty. For the most part, "Red Hill" goes down smooth, though there are a few chunky bits that could have used an extra pulse through the blender.

Title: Red Hill Directed by: Patrick Hughes Starring: Ryan Kwanten, Steve Bisley, Claire van der Boom and Tommy Lewis Red Hill: not only is it a place aimed to showcase a largely uninhabited area of Australia that many people don’t know about, but it’s also the place that highlights the talents of a cast and crew that many people aren’t familiar with. The new independent drama, which was directed and written by newcomer Patrick Hughes, and features actors Steve Bisley, Tom E. Aussie actor Ryan Kwanten is in a pretty good place these days. He stars on the hit HBO vampire series True Blood, which begins shooting its fourth season in December, and this Friday, his toplining vehicle Red Hill opens in U.S. theaters (NY, La and TX to start). The 33-year-old actor also took a lead role in Wrong Turn 2 director Joe Lynch's upcoming FX extravaganza Knights Of Badassdom, and believe it or not, will play Charles Manson (!) in a new movie based on the infamous 1969 California murder spree. In NYC to promote his violent modern-day Western Red Hill, which lensed in Australia under tyro director Patrick Hughes, the Sydney-raised/La-living Kwanten sat down with Fango to talk about his career. In Red Hill, Kwanten plays a young cop who voluntarily transfers to a quite town and a “cushy job.” But on his first day of a work,...

It is Shane Cooper’s (Ryan Kwanten) first day on the job in the tiny town of Red Hill. The young police officer has moved himself and his expecting wife (Claire van der Boom) out to a veritable no man’s land for a taste of the slow life, to get out of the city, and maybe to get over some lingering issues Cooper has with the nature of his job. But Red Hill is not the place to go for a strolling-down-Main-Street type of existence. Not even remotely.

Red Hill is a straightforward modern revenge western that provides plenty of slick thrills and pacey action, with racial undertones and perhaps the most startling animal appearance of the year...if that's even a category.
Police officer Shane Cooper (True Blood's Ryan Kwanten) and his wife move from the city to the rural Red Hill, in search of a peaceful existence in which they can raise their child. On arrival, Cooper immediately clashes with police chief Old Bill (Steve Bisley) who's not one for city folk. Cooper's first day gets worse still, when murderer Jimmy Conway (Tommy Lewis) escapes from a maximum security prison and the police department seems convinced he's heading for Red Hill. Having put him away originally, Bill is certain the half aborigine Conway is out for revenge.

We were lucky enough to see writer/director Patrick Hughes’ latest, Red Hill, at the Edinburgh Film Festival this year and we were impressed by what we saw.
There’s a new trailer out in the wild today and it gives a good impression, certainly buzz from its debut at Sydney and then at Edinburgh suggests that it’s one to look out for.
True Blooders (is there a collective terms for fans of the series yet?) will flock to see Jason Stackhouse himself, Ryan Kwanten, taking the lead in this police thriller along with Steve Bisley and Tom E. Lewis.
Here’s the trailer,

Policeman Shane Cooper (Ryan Kwanten) has moved from the city to a quiet town in the middle of nowhere with his pregnant wife and after moving into the town for a couple of days, Cooper and the other police officers are tasked with the take down of an escaped criminal named Jimmy Conway (Tommy Lewis).

The Hollywood Reporter says that Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has picked up all the U.S. distribution rights to Patrick Hughes’ neo-western Red Hill, a film he wrote and directed.
I hadn’t heard of the film before reading the story in THR and I thought I would post a little bit about it because it sounds pretty awesome and the quote from the Sony rep in the article sort puts it into really good perspective as well. “Hughes has contemporized the revenge western with such style and adrenaline that we jumped at the opportunity to distribute such a bad ass movie,” offered Sony Pictures Scott Shooman.
