White Sun wins key award at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival.
White Sun won best film in the Silver Screen Awards at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival.
The second feature of Nepalese director Deepak Rauniyar is about a Maoist who returns home to bury his father.
The jury found it “an exceptional and incisive film about civil war and memory that encapsulates the never-ending conflict that is the state of the world today, with a message of hope that a different future for all of us can be possible through our children”.
Abdullah Mohammad Saad was named best director for his debut feature Live From Dhaka, which also took best performance for actor Mostafa Monwar. Shot in grainy black and white, it tells the story of a partially handicapped man who lives his days in anguish as he tries to find a way to leave Dhaka.
A special mention went to Turah, the debut feature...

Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis (A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery) by Lav Diaz
Philippines | 2016 – 485 min.
Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro is considered to be one of the most influential proponents in the struggle against Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines during the late nineteenth century. Today, he is still celebrated as the father of the Philippine Revolution. Director Lav Diaz examines this myth and undertakes another expedition into the eventful history of his native land. The film’s various loosely interwoven narrative threads are held together by an exploration of the role of the individual in history and their involvement in political and social developments. Bonifacio’s widow is searching for her husband’s missing dead body; as she and her followers stumble deeper into the jungle, they become entangled in the dense thicket of their own guilt and responsibility. The Spanish governor...

Golden Bear winner Gianfranco Rosi among those calling for “awareness” of migrant tragedies.
The awards ceremony of the 66th Berlin Film Festival was a typically glamorous occasion, with Hollywood star and international jury head Meryl Streep on stage to help present the coveted Golden and Silver Bears.
But it was the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe, claiming countless lives in perilous sea crossings, that dominated the winner’s speeches – and the winning film.
The Golden Bear was won by Fire At Sea, a documentary about life on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa where thousands of asylum seekers from Africa and the Middle East have landed on their arduous journey to Europe.
Accepting the award, Italian director Gianfranco Rosi said: “At this moment, my deeper thoughts go to all the people who never arrived at Lampedusa on these journeys of hope. I want to dedicate this award to the people of Lampedusa.”
