Scandal, Season 4, Episode 2, “The State of the Union”
Written by Heather Mitchell
Directed by Allison Liddi-Brown
Airs Thursdays at 9pm Est on ABC
On this week’s Scandal, Olivia is blackmailed by Cyrus, Abby breaks through to Mellie, Huck and Quinn address their issues, Fitz seeks Olivia’s advice, and Rosen adopts Olivia’s methods for “winning.”
One of the best decisions Scandal is making this season is allowing the deaths of Harrison, Jerry, and James to hang heavy over the characters. Rather than quickly moving past everyone’s grief, as fast-paced shows have a tendency to do, season four is keeping the dead present in almost every scene. As a result, this season is much darker than past seasons, and Scandal is already better for it. This show has frequently crossed into melodramatic territory, but the healthy dose of realism is doing an excellent job keeping Scandal grounded.

Parenthood, Season 5, Episode 16, “The Enchanting Mr. Knight”
Written by Julia Brownell
Directed by Allison Liddi-Brown
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Est on NBC
This week, on Parenthood: Julia accepts some blame, Crosby eavesdrops, and Sarah makes a choice
Parenthood knocked it out of the park last week by focusing in on the difficult transitions happening for Julia, Sydney and Victor, and Amy. It was somewhat of a respite, with the various Bravermans coming to each other’s aid and generally being the best versions of themselves. This week that break is extended somewhat, with each of the main storylines in a holding pattern. While the episode is entertaining, it’s far from essential and indicative of the growing pains present this season, with the series that so excellently adapted to a shorter episode order last year straining to expand back to its full 22 episode order.

Parenthood, Season 5, Episode 15, “Just Like at Home”
Written by Ian Deichtman & Kristin Rusk Robinson
Directed by Allison Liddi-Brown
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Est on NBC
This week, on Parenthood: Sydney and Victor spend their first weekend away, Drew talks to Amy, and siblings are the best
Parenthood has struggled this season with a handful of storylines, most notably the Julia and Joel friction and eventual trial separation. While this arc has felt contrived and frustratingly unexplored, from Joel’s perspective at the very least, the fallout from his decision two episodes ago has been fantastic, both in concept and execution. This week, Sydney and Victor head to Joel’s new apartment for their first weekend away from home, leaving Julia alone with her thoughts (and Orange is the New Black), and watching each set of characters react to this, and the way writers Ian Deichtman and Kristin Rusk Robinson...

Alfonso Cuarón wins 2014 DGA Award for ‘Gravity’ (photo: Directors Guild of America Award winner Alfonso Cuarón and last year’s DGA Award winner Ben Affleck) As expected, Alfonso Cuarón won the 2014 Directors Guild of America Award for the blockbuster Gravity at a January 25, 2014, ceremony held at Los Angeles’ Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. “We saw all these photographs of earth from space, and it’s absolutely beautiful; hues of greens and blues,” Cuarón told the crowd after receiving his award from last year’s DGA winner, Ben Affleck. “Everything seems so organic [from space]. Those silly lines and boundaries we put on political maps, you can’t see that from space. It’s a bizarre experiment of nature, that is the human experience. And it’s what we as directors try to sort out as filmmakers.” A mix of space thriller and inspirational soap opera that has just about nothing to do with...

Another Oscar pre-cursor award was handed out Saturday night.
Director Alfonso Cuarón won the DGA’s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for Gravity. This top honor puts him in a good spot to win the Academy Award for Best Director on Oscar Sunday, March 2. The awards for 2013 were announced during the 66th Annual DGA Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Other DGA nominees were Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips); Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave); David O. Russell (American Hustle); and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street).
With just five weeks until the Oscars are announced from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, 12 Years A Slave, which tied with Gravity last Saturday to earn the top award at the Producers Guild, seems to be in a three-way race with American Hustle which took home the Screen Actors Guild award last weekend.

Written by Heather Mitchell
Directed by Allison Liddi-Brown
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Et on ABC
On this week’s Scandal, Olivia Pope goes to war with The White House (again), Fitz grows some “presidential-sized balls,” Mellie manages to shock Cyrus, and Jake is granted a reprieve from the horrifying hole of insanity.
No one on Scandal works (or lives) in Wonderland–especially not Olivia Pope herself. At any given moment on the show, somebody is fighting for their life, their career, their reputation, etc. After so much fighting, you’d think every character on the cast would be ready to drop their D.C. lives and head to Vermont for some jam-making, but no, that’s not how these Gladiators work. They’ll fight to the death; unfortunately, such unrelenting determination means people will begin to crack.
Luckily for the viewers,...

“I try to keep the ghosts out but they always find a way back in”, Victoria tells Conrad in this week’s episode of Revenge, “Masquerade”. When Emily learns that Victoria has a son you know that it’s game on and the this season has shifted. While the secrets are important, it’s now going to be about bringing those secrets to light.
So much of this season has been about seeing Victoria get thrown off her game. Watching Emily unsettle Victoria with reminders of the son she gave up is one of the most rewarding parts of the episode. The masquerade scenes are beautifully filmed, both delicious to look at and the eerie culmination of an episode full of black roses and ominous lines like “sometimes self-deception can be therapeutic,...

Back during Season 2 of ABC’s Private Practice (Thursdays at 10/9c), I was using words such as “shrill” and “steely” to describe Dr. Charlotte King, who at the time was but the chief of staff at St. Ambrose and a sometime thorn in Oceanside’s side.
My, how she’s grown.
“Who would have thought this would have been where Charlotte would go?” KaDee Strickland muses as she surveys her current storyline, in which Charlotte is helping husband Cooper (played by Paul Adelstein) deal with the life-threatening illness of his newly discovered son’s baby mama, Erica (A.J. Things fall apart. That would seem to be the message of this week's powerfully moving episode of Friday Night Lights ("Fracture"), written by Bridget Carpenter and directed by Allison Liddi, but that's not really what's at play here. A beautifully nuanced episode about fracturing relationships and imploding teams, it was also a portrait of the way in which connections can occur and fractured relationships can knit themselves back together. Just as the Dillon Lions seem to be at their lowest point, things get even worse for them. A fight breaks out between Vince and Luke as they prepare to take the stage at a pep rally. Coach Taylor is forced to utter a lie about victory even as he sees his team struggling to be a unified front. Julie turns her car around once more. But it's the little moments that offer some hope: the way that Becky leaves the...

On Thursday (Nov. 4) night's episode of "Private Practice" we saw the aftermath of Charlotte's (KaDee Strickland) brutal assault.
Strickland talked to Zap2it about Charlotte's decision to hide the rape from everybody besides Addison (Kate Walsh) and the affect it will have on all of the relationships on the show. "Shonda's [Rhimes, the show's creator] is not letting this thing go, and I'm very grateful to her because it's rich and interesting."
Strickland shared some behind-the-scenes details with us, including the director's (Allison Liddi-Brown) decision to not let Paul Adelstein see her in make-up (which took about four or five hours) until his character Cooper did for the first time. "Paul was not allowed to see me until we did it on camera. We just didn't let him see it," she explains. "When you watch the episode what you see happen to Cooper is as pure as the driven snow. It's really beautiful. He's wonderful in it.

Kathryn Bigelow has nabbed the Directors Guild of America award for her work on "The Hurt Locker."
The feature film award and other directorial achievement awards were announced during the 62nd Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, Jan. 30 in Los Angeles, hosted by Carl Reiner.
In the past, the DGA's feature film award winner has been a decent predictor of who will win the best director Oscar. Since 1948, the DGA and Academy have only differed six times in that category.
Bigelow beat out fellow directors James Cameron ("Avatar"), Lee Daniels ( "Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire"), Jason Reitman ("Up in the Air") and Quentin Tarantino ("Inglourious Basterds").

In an historic win, Kathryn Bigelow and her tense Iraq War drama "The Hurt Locker" from Summit Entertainment copped the DGA Award for best-directed feature film Saturday.
The win drew cheers from a packed ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, where throughout the night it was clear many were pulling for Bigelow to deliver a dramatic victory for female filmmakers. The DGA feature film win was a first-ever by a woman.
"This is the most incredible moment of my life," Bigelow said.
Bigelow overcame competition including Fox-distributed "Avatar," directed by her ex-husband James Cameron; Lee Daniels and "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" from Lionsgate; Jason Reitman and "Up in the Air" from Paramount; and Quentin Tarantino and "Inglourious Basterds" from the Weinstein Co.

The Director's Guild Awards were held last night, and they're pretty much useless as awards go, but they do seem to be the last of the major awards before the Oscar nominations are announced on Tuesday. The "major shocker" here, apparently, is that Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) beat out her ex-husband James Cameron for best director, although it's only a "major shocker" if the Golden Globes were the only awards this season you're familiar with. In fact, the bigger shock would've been if Cameron had won, since of the 9 major awards for director so far this awards season, Bigelow has won seven now, to Cameron's one (Golden Globes) and Clint Eastwood's one (The National Board). So, please, La Times, "shocking" is the last fucking word you could use to describe Bigelow's victory, which you should know since you're the goddamn "Awards Insider." I have no idea why this bothers me,...

"Mad Men" crew prove themselves that they work with the best. The AMC drama has just received three nominations at 2010 Directors Guild Awards. Three episodic directors, Jennifer Getzinger, Lesli Linka Glatter and Matthew Weiner, will compete against each other in Dramatic Series category.
The domination by "Mad Men" is almost being toppled by Fox's new series, "Glee", which nabs two under the category of Comedy Series. Similarly, HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" also has two candidates under Comedy, Jeff Schaffer and Larry Charles, who are both known as executive producers as well.
"Television directors play a crucial role in eliciting performance, advancing the story and establishing the look and feel in all genres of television," said DGA President Taylor Hackford. "The DGA Awards highlight the most outstanding examples of excellence in television each year, and our 41 nominees in eight categories have distinguished themselves with creative, compelling projects that entertained and informed a diverse worldwide audience.
