The antagonistic ghost of Patayin Sa Sindak Si Barbara (Frighten Barbara to Death) refuses to go in peace. In this 1995 remake of the 1974 cult classic Patayin Mo Sa Sindak Si Barbara, the title character returns to her ancestral home to pay her respects and find closure. Yet Barbara’s late sister Ruth isn’t so happy to see her after all these years apart — in fact, she wants her dead.
Going back to the Philippines doesn’t come easy for Barbara (Lorna Tolentino) after being away for almost a decade. Her move to America was intended to be a permanent one, yet Barbara’s motivation for leaving in the first place is also the reason why she goes back. The movie opens with Barbara watching a degraded videotape from Ruth (Dawn Zulueta) over and over again until her trance-like viewing is interrupted. This almost Lynchian moment contrasts the disturbing plea...

Various colorful images of Manila open Otso (Eight), Elwood Perez's first film since Lupe: A Seaman's Wife and Ssshhh... She Walks by Night ten years ago. Lex (Vince Tanada), a returning Filipino writer who is commissioned by a director to draft a script for an upcoming independent project, gives perspective to the seemingly unconnected displays of Manila's sights. Nothing has changed. The truths of the Manila that he grew up in are still the same truths that Manila grapples with. After a tour of the unchanging metropolis, Lex moves into his home for the next few months, a remarkable apartment building owned by Anita Linda, a local screen goddess. Otso suddenly switches to stark monochrome. Otso is perhaps Perez's most impenetrable film. Perez, however, has always...

Recently featured as one of Pigeons and Planes 12 Female Artists You Should Know, Alice and The Glass Lake is dreamy pop music layered in the sonic dream world of Alice Lake. The imagery she uses in her songs is borrowed from the glassy Wisconsin lakes of her childhood. The artist, now based in NYC, has proven to be both unique in her songwriting style and versatile in her ability to make shapes appear out of nowhere (and shapes are awesome). Her music harnesses all the greatest things about escapism and the surreal way in which you have to marry that to reality; it is, in her own words, “the lens through which [she] lives her dreams.” The new video for 'Higher' blends vibrant instrumentation with smooth seductive hooks and a forceful delivery. At its core, 'Higher' is a performance video. It showcases Alice Lake’s implicit relationship to her music and...

Alice & The Glass Lake is a project from Brooklyn musician Alice Lake, and her forthcoming Ep The Evolution is filled with the kind of hazy sounds you might associate with a place called Glass Lake. In anticipation of the album’s release, Lake has released a video for the single “Higher.” The video was animated, directed and edited by Rodriguez Joglar, and its unearthly feel is an apt visual representation of the song’s sound. Watch the video for “Higher” in the player below. The Evolution is set for digital release on June 11, with physicial copies of the album available...

As news breaks that MGM has risen out of bankruptcy, this writer would like to take a moment and remember when this studio first entered the news, with its formation being the result of a corporate merger on Wall Street over eighty years ago. Following this merge, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer would be the dominant motion picture studio in Hollywood, from the end of the silent film era through World War II.
The man behind the merger was Marcus Loew, the owner of a large theater chain known as Loew’s Theatres. Wanting to provide a steady supply of films for his theaters, he had purchased both Metro Pictures Corporation and Goldwyn Pictures. However, both of these companies lacked leadership, and Loew was unable to spare his longtime assistant, Nicholas Schenck, as he was needed in New York City to oversee the theater chain. The answer came to Loew when his visited the...

Welcome back to our series of Tribeca Film Festival previews, where we highlight a film that will be screening over the next few weeks. This week we’re showing you the trailer for Brillante Mendoza’s film, Lola. This is one of Rudie’s most anticipated films, and we’ll be sure to cover it on the next bonus podcast episode, regarding the Tribeca Film Festival.
Lola will be screening all weekend (April 22, 23, 24) at the Village East Cinema 4 and the Clearview Chelsea Cinema 8. For a complete list of screening times and venues, head over to the official Tribeca page. You can also become a fan of the film over on Facebook, although I cannot confirm that the page is official. They also link to an official website, but I was getting an error every time I tried visiting it.

Franco, Maxwell and Harpo. Half of the fun of building these posts
is these completely nonsensical groupings!
1859 Billy the Kid, outlaw. I've always thought it a mystery as to exactly why people routinely idolize characters whom they would never want to meet in real life. Murderers, criminals, thieves, (especially gangsters)... they all get the silver screen pedestal treatment. Billy has been portrayed dozens of times and Val Kilmer, Emilio Estevez, Kris Kristofferson, Buster Crabbe and Paul Newman have all done the job.
1888 Harpo Marx I'm embarrassed to say this but I can never remember which Marx Bros is which. When I watch 30s comedies, I almost always select a screwball romance.
1892 Erté artist over whom wee Nathaniel obsessed, wanting a whole animated movie to spring forth from his theatrical illustrations of ladies in elaborate headdresses and fab gowns.
1913 Michael Gough,...

This week in theaters finds some late-to-the-party summertime silliness lining up alongside a couple of titles arriving three weeks early for Halloween. Elsewhere the arthouse scene provides a strong showing with Chilean maids, Filipino mothers and some good ol' New York psychos.

The only person who's worked harder in the Filipino film industry over the past three years than director Adolfo Alix Jr., who's made 11 features since 2006, is his leading lady Anita Linda, who has made 13 in the same time and plays the title role in this minimalist mood piece as stand-in for an entire nation's embittered resilience. Captured in a series of long takes, the film follows our eponymous heroine on a mostly silent odyssey, casually aiding neighbors and strangers alike as she wistfully celebrates her 80th birthday in the shantytown where she lives.
