Brian Wilson co-wrote and co-produced many Pet Sounds originals, even returning to approve all the “tech work” behind this Beach Boys album. Here’s what one engineer said for Wouldn’t It Be Nice: Brian Wilson and the Making of the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds.

God only knows what fans would do without this Beach Boys album. The surf rock group premiered Pet Sounds in 1966. Several songs from this collection were written and mixed by Brian Wilson.
On Spotify, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, and Tony Asher are credited as co-writers for “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” Brian Wilson is the sole songwriter and producer for “Sloop John B.” Wilson even sat in on the “tech work” for this Beach Boys collection.

The Beach Boys’ 16th and 17th studio albums — Sunflower and Surf’s Up — are getting a massive box set treatment to mark the 50th anniversary of the latter LP. Feel Flows – The Sunflower & Surf’s Up Sessions 1969-1971 arrives on July 30th via Capitol/UMe and is available for preorder.
Alongside the box set announcement, they’ve dropped the previously unreleased song “Big Sur.” Originally recorded for Surf’s Up, the song houses the group’s classic harmonies and wistful yearning to return to the titular California coastal area.

Late last month, with little notice, three Beach Boys compilations appeared on Spotify and other streaming platforms: Wake the World: The Friends Sessions; I Can Hear Music: The 20/20 Sessions; and On Tour: 1968 (Live). Almost none of the recordings had been previously released. They include originals and covers, captured in live soundchecks, in-studio work tapes, instrumental backing tracks, and isolated a cappella vocal tracks, a number of which are revelatory.
The music from this period has generally been considered subpar by the impossible-to-match standards set by Pet Sounds in 1966. But these sessions,...
