We are big fans here of Dutch director Yfke van Berckelaer's short film Lili. And we're not the only ones: since its appearance at festivals a year ago, the short has been making a victory lap around the world, picking up awards all over the place for its direction and its star Lisa Smit. And the good news is: thanks to horror short network Alter, all eight-and-a-half minutes of Lili can now be seen for free online by clicking the link below. In my review, I said this about the story: Basically what we get to see is an actress during an audition, doing the same line-reading over and over again, following the instructions of a mostly off-screen director (acting veteran Derek de Lint). Reviewing a short can be a difficult endeavour, especially one which is only nine minutes long. At that length, it's hard to tell people what a film is about without spoiling it almost entirely. So rest assured I will keep the description of Lili to a minimum. Basically what we get to see is an actress during an audition, doing the same line-reading over and over again, following the instructions of a mostly off-screen director (Dutch acting veteran Derek de Lint). At the beginning everything is nice and fine, but... well, you're never more powerless than when you apply for a job, and we all know the stories about what happens during auditions, right? Director Yfke van Berckelaer deftly...

In the 1930s, a group of Spanish children are found to have somehow contracted a disease which makes them unable to feel pain. For the safety of the general public, they are kept locked up. Intersecting with this story, a talented doctor, David (Alex Brendemuhl) is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and while enquiring about the possibility of a bone marrow transplant, goes on a search to find out the truth behind his heritage.
The idea of what could be done with a bunch of kids who can’t feel pain is one which is explored pretty well through the first half of Painless. Doctors performing experiments and the almost inevitable entrance of Nazis is not entirely original but certainly interesting stuff and is...

Having been someone who has attended both FrightFest and Lff in the past, I have to say that location aside, there are few similarities, and even less when it comes to the films themselves. Toronto – On July 31st, the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival announced its second wave of features and documentaries to be added to this year’s already promising lineup.
The ‘Midnight Madness’ programme, which showcases up and coming genre films, will return for a second year, with The Raid winning the inaugural audience choice award in 2011.
Tiff Programmer Colin Geddes says that the audience should expect “everything from outrageous horror comedies to mock-doc-eco-apocalypse thrillers, featuring trans-dimensional bugs, lewd Catholic priests, meat monsters and dog-snapping psychopaths that will animate the Ryerson Theatre when the clock chimes 12.”
Returning for its fourth edition this year is the ‘City to City’ programme, which puts a spotlight on filmmakers working and living in a certain city, introducing audiences to local independent films from around the world. This year’s city of choice is Mumbai.
Artistic Director Cameron Bailey says, “Mumbai’s cinema today is entirely...

A woman who was buried alive returns with amnesia and recalls a bomb planted on a navy ship. Kate (Sasha Alexander) gets on well with her and as always is eager to believe her. Tony (Michael Weatherly) claims not to know where Ducky (David McCallum) lives - never mind that will be cleared up in a few seasons. Gibbs (Mark Harmon) mentions The Apartment with Jack Lemmon – who is into movies too, like Tony, but not as many. Gibbs also mentioned Shane with Alan Ladd, which Tony hasn't heard of. Oh come on everyone's heard of Shane. So for such a movie buff, how come he hasn't? Abby (Pauley Perrette) has a chastity belt, why is that not surprising? Tony wants to see it and no doubt Tony would be able to get into it. (He's Tony, he can get into anything!) Of course Gibbs wouldn't like to see it,...
