Drew Hodges is at a loss for words. Asked if he’s surprised at the life he’s leading -- did he imagine he’d grow up to fly around the world orchestrating scenes with great actors and artists for his own wildly influential agency -- he pauses three entire seconds. “I wish I had an answer for you,” he says. “It's like, Come for the veal, stay for the floor show.”
You might not know Drew Hodges’ name, but if you’ve enjoyed some form of popular culture in the past decade, you’re living in a world he helped create. "When I started, the idea of theater was still very much that ‘fabulous invalid’ thing," he says, “sort of dying, old, kind of nostalgic. I was lucky enough to work on a lot of stuff that started to chip away at that."

In advance of the release of the highly anticipated motion picture Annie, in theaters on December 19, 2014, Sony Pictures Entertainment is helping to support Turnaround Arts, a signature program of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Turnaround Arts works with local program partners to provide intensive arts education resources to clusters of high-poverty schools across the country, leading to increases in attendance, academic achievement, and student engagement. As part of a collaboration with Annie to promote arts education, Turnaround Arts will receive support, and Turnaround Arts schools who want to put on the Broadway classic will get resources and assistance in staging their production.
The initiative kicked off Wednesday, September 10, 2014 in Minneapolis, where Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhané Wallis, and filmmaker Will Gluck visited Northport Elementary, a Turnaround Arts school, where they met the first-through-fifth graders and worked with students preparing to audition for their school production of “Annie.

What is the state of musical theater today? Ask eight people and you'll likely get eight different answers: There are too many revivals. Jukebox musicals are choking the form. More diversity among writers is needed. Ticket prices are too high. The New York Times has too much power. The Internet is destroying standards. The audience is dying out. A new audience is emerging thanks to "Glee."To get an idea of the core health of musical theater, I spoke with eight professionals, who work with new musicals and new writers, about where shows come from, how they're developed, and the strengths and weaknesses of a very ad hoc system. It Startson the PageObviously, everything begins with the writers. We are blessed with an abundance of successful composers, lyricists, and book writers today—including Stephen Schwartz, William Finn, Terrence McNally, Jeanine Tesori, Thomas Meehan, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, John Weidman,...
