“Wednesday’s child is full of woe.”
When Charles Addams was helping turn his amusing gothic New Yorker cartoons into a television series, the little girl needed a name, and he used a line from an old-time children’s poem. He’d been at the drawing board with these characters since 1938, although Gomez and Morticia’s daughter didn’t arrive until 1944. At different times, she was older or younger than her sibling, Pugsley.
Ever since her arrival, Wednesday has been a fixture, her pale skin, pig-tailed black hair, and solemn expression imprinted on future generations of Goth girls. From Lisa Loring to Christina Ricci, the live-action look has endured as the character has aged from her purported six years old in the original series pilot to 18 in the 2010 Broadway musical adaptation.

Let’s talk about the one and only Wednesday Addams, shall we? This little lady has been the poster child for goth girls everywhere since the ’60s, and she’s had more reincarnations than a cat with nine lives. Now, I’m not saying she’s got more comebacks than Cher, but let’s just say Wednesday’s had her fair share of the spotlight. So, buckle up as we stroll down this cobwebbed memory lane and give a nod to the sassy stars who’ve given life to our favorite macabre munchkin. Ah, "The Addams Family." They're creepy and they're kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They're all together ooky. And so on. The ghoulish Addamses were created by cartoonist Charles Addams in the pages of The New Yorker before Hollywood came calling, adapting Addams' comics into a TV series in 1964. The series followed a family of weirdos who live every day like it's Halloween, much to the confusion of the normal folks all around them. The original "The Addams Family" series lasted only two seasons, running between 1964 and 1966, but its impact and influence continued for decades.
Sadly, the majority of the original cast of "The Addams Family" are no longer with us. But there's one main player who is still around.

On Monday night, the In Memoriam segment at the 2023 Emmy Awards reflected on some of Hollywood’s greatest losses in the past year. Among the tributes appeared Matthew Perry, Angus Cloud, Paul Reubens, Norman Lear, Barbara Walters, and dozens more. But the acknowledgments were also notably missing a number of figures.
The segment spanned nearly five full minutes as The War and Treaty and Charlie Puth delivered performances of “See You Again” and the Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There for You.” But not mentioned during that time were Jerry Springer,...

Jenna Ortega has been a rising star over the past year, headlining the “Scream VI” blockbuster movie and hosting “Saturday Night Live” for the first time on March 11. Her most high profile gig was launched by Netflix last November, when she took on the iconic role of Wednesday Addams, the central character in the streamer’s third-most-watched series of all time, “Wednesday.” Only “Stranger Things” and “Squid Game” have logged more hours viewed.
The dark comedy series follows Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at NeverMore Academy, when she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a killing spree and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents. It’s the first time we’ve watched Wednesday live through those awkward teenage years.

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

Melinda Dillon, who was nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her roles in Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and Sydney Pollack’s “Absence of Malice,” has died at age 83, her family said in a public obituary.
She died on Jan. 9, but the obituary gave no cause of death.
Dillon memorably played single mother Jillian Guiler, whose son Barry (Cary Guffey), is abducted by aliens in “Close Encounters.” Like Richard Dreyfuss’s lead character, she also becomes obsessed with Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and both their quests lead them there. After running the gauntlet of military obstacles, they are the only two civilians who witness the alien ship landing in the film’s emotional finale.

Lisa Loring, who played the original Wednesday Addams on “The Addams Family” from 1964 to 1966, died Saturday. She was 64 years old. She died from complications from a stroke caused by high blood pressure, per media reports.
Loring is best known for her role in AMC’s macabre comedy, “The Addams Family,” in which she played the adorable-but-morbid Wednesday Addams. Though she only played the creepy pet-collecting, headless doll carrying-character for two years, she set the mold for live-action portrayals of Wednesday for decades to come. Loring was born in the Marshall Islands to parents who had served in the Navy. She lived in Hawaii before coming to Los Angeles with her mother.

Jenna Ortega may have once been nervous to share the screen with Christina Ricci, but that should now have gone away with a snap, as not only has Ricci sung her praises but has classified her as the perfect person to play Wednesday Addams.
For decades, Christina Ricci was the Wednesday Addams–many fans of the ‘90s Addams Family movies would even be hard-pressed to name the actress who played Wednesday on the 1964-1966 series (it’s Lisa Loring). And Ricci is quite pleased with it, saying, “I’m happy whenever people my age say Wednesday was a big part of their youth.” Now, Jenna Ortega may be the new go-to, with Ricci saying she has been “truly incredible at making Wednesday a modern badass.”
While Ricci loved portraying Gomez and Morticia’s daughter, she sees Ortega as the rightful heir to the role. “I also think Jenna Ortega is amazing.

Back in 1944, when Charles Addams' original "The Addams Family" cartoons appeared in "The New Yorker," one featured a punchline in which mother Morticia encouraged her daughter to commit attempted murder. "Well don't come whining to me," she tells her presumably bullied daughter. "Go tell him you'll poison him right back."
When she first made the leap from the funny pages to the TV screen, Wednesday was just as morbid as ever, albeit also adorable as embodied by child actor Lisa Loring. In the 1960s "Addams Family" series, pint-sized Wednesday plays with explosives and a guillotine, while in the '90s, Christina Ricci's version of the character straps her brother...
