Pet Shop Boys covered David Bowie’s “All The Young Dudes” for the BBC Radio 2—with a little help from the BBC Concert Orchestra.
Vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe performed the rock anthem at Maida Vale Studios on February 23rd, along with their new single “Loneliness” and ’80s hit “Left to My Own Devices.” The special set closed out BBC Radio 2’s Piano Month 2024.
Bowie famously wrote “All The Young Dudes” for English rock band Mott the Hopple in 1972, and it went on to become the band’s biggest hit and signature song. The Thin White Duke also recorded his own version of the glam rock tune (not released until 1995’s Rarestonebowie), and Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) had a minor hit with a cover off of his debut solo album, 1990’s Tattooed Millionaire.

Pet Shop Boys have announced the release of a new album called Nonetheless, which is set for release on April 26th. The forthcoming project was produced by James Ford — our 2023 Producer of the Year — and marks Pet Shop Boys’ return to their longtime label home at Parlophone. As a preview, the band has shared the lead single, “Loneliness.”
Nonetheless features 10 new songs recorded and mixed in London last year with Ford. In a statement, the duo of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe said, “We wanted this album to be a celebration of the unique and diverse emotions that make us human. From the more dance-orientated tracks to the raw poignancy of the introspective ballads, with their beautiful string arrangements, each track tells a story and contributes to the overall narrative of the album.”
Nonetheless will be released through Parlophone, where Pet Shop Boys previously called home from 1985-2012. Pre-orders are now ongoing.

Big screen shark attack sequel Meg 2: The Trench will be swimming into theaters on August 4, 2023, and today the film has received its official rating from the MPA.
Like the previous film, Meg 2: The Trench has been rated “PG-13” for…
“Action/violence, some bloody images, language and brief suggestive material.”
Last week’s bloody official trailer suggested that Meg 2 could potentially be going a bit harder on the violence than the disappointing 2018 movie, but there was realistically no way Warner Bros. was going to risk potentially cutting into the sequel’s box office profits with an “R” rating.
The good news? As the trailer suggests, there are a lot of gruesome ways a massive shark can eat people – and other monsters, including a T-Rex this time around! – while still sticking to that PG-13 rating. After all, the three Megalodon sharks in the upcoming movie are so large that they’re literally swallowing humans whole,...

Steven Spielberg has opened up about his feelings of “regret” following the tremendous success of Jaws — and its corresponding wave of damaging influence.
Spielberg reflected on the 1975 thriller film’s repercussions. “One of the things I still fear [is] — not to get eaten by a shark, but that sharks are somehow mad at me for the feeding frenzy of crazy sport fisherman that happened after 1975, which I truly, and to this day, regret the decimation of the shark population because of the book and the film,” the director said during an interview with BBC‘s Desert Island Discs.
The legendary writer and director emphasized, “I really, truly regret that.”
Peter Benchley wrote the 1974 book that the movie was based on, and he apologized to the London Daily Press for the same reason back in 2006. “Jaws was entirely a fiction,” Benchley told the publication at the time. “Knowing what I know now,...

When Angelo Badalamenti, composer and renowned collaborator of filmmaker-musician David Lynch, died on Sunday at age 85, he left behind some of the most evocative soundscapes known to cinema. Lustrous orchestration and small combo jazz sounds for Lynch works such as “Blue Velvet” and “Twin Peaks” tweaked the senses while underscoring the grotesquerie below the surface of the American dream. But there was so much more to Badalamenti than his sweeping cinematic ambience for a single filmmaker.
Here is a list of some of Angelo Badalamenti’s finest musical moments, with and without David Lynch.
The Slow Club scene in “Blue Velvet” and “Mysteries of Love” (1986)
Along with a cameo appearance as the pianist/band leader at the Slow Club where the tortured Dorothy Valens (played by Isabella Rossellini) sings, Badalamenti starts off her musical rendition of “Blue Velvet” as a sleazy lounge song, all blowzy saxophone and off-the-beat rhythms, before segueing into the tempered,...

Martin McDonagh’s cult hit man feature comes to 4K looking extremely good: fans of low-key black humor and droll sentimentality, kinda-like-the-Coens, kinda-like-Tarantino, love this picture. Cute characterizations from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson & Ralph Fiennes bring light to a ‘killers with a heart’ story. It keeps us watching to see what happens next, that’s for sure. And when’s the last time that 13th century European art and architecture figured so heavily in a mob saga?

High above a California beach, a helicopter crew told numerous people in the water over a loud speaker to calmly exit the water after more than a dozen great white sharks were spotted in their vicinity.
“You are paddle-boarding next to approximately 15 great white sharks,” Deputy Brian Stockbridge announced over the helicopter loudspeaker to people in the water. “They are advising you exit the water in a calm manner. The sharks are as close as the surfline.”
Captured on video and posted online by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, sharks are seen swimming right next to the beachgoers.

Obviously it’s not a good idea to kidnap the Prime Minister’s daughter when some badass Sas types are around to respond. Cause you know, being badasses, they’re probably doing to save the day. That’s just what they do. It’s probably no surprise that that’s exactly what happens in director Paul Tanter’s “He Who Dares”. Tanter is the writer/director of the “White Collar Hooligan” series, of which there are three at the moment. Who knew white collar hooliganism could be so lucrative? Check out the trailer for the actioner “He Who Dares” below. Looks like you’ll get some fisticuffs with your gunplay, which is never a bad thing. After last year’s introspective “Elysium,” Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant return with “Electric,” an aggressively dance-oriented album of eight originals and one very interesting cover. This is an album to thump, not think, your way through. The album marks the first time Psb have worked on a studio album with producer Stuart Price, best known for his work with Madonna and The Killers. Price has talked about combining “Old school synth and drum machine programming and new school computer mangling” for the album. That intent is clear from the the album’s opener, "Axis." An instrumental with a relentless rat-a-tat that looks...

The Venezuelan-born choreographer Javier de Frutos is a volatile talent. At its best, in pieces such as Paseillo and Nopalitos, his work has a dream-like intensity and strangeness. Sexual identities are ambiguous, and the atmosphere tense with obscure ritual. In The Most Incredible Thing, a three-act dance work based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairy story, he joins forces with Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, and the result is at once spectacular and chilly. Aided by Metrosexuality designer Katrina Lindsay, Tennant and Lowe have located the story in a Soviet dystopia modelled on Fritz Lang's Metropolis. Their music is dramatically textured, the choreography is deft and referential (Balanchine, Jooss, Nijinska) and the filmic effects come thick and fast.

There’s nothing wrong with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe writing the music for a ballet based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. But there’s a context problem with the double-disc soundtrack to The Most Incredible Thing. For starters, even though it’s officially a Tennant/Lowe release, those two names are inextricably linked to the seminal, hyper-catchy electro-pop that they’ve made over the past three decades as the Pet Shop Boys. So while there are some synth surges and gay-disco thumps over the course of this predominantly instrumental 82-minute orchestral score—including a snippet of the ...

Katie Mitchell made her name directing difficult, bleak drama for adults. But since the birth of her daughter, Edie, when she was 41, she has discovered a knack for madcap, fast-paced kids' shows
Katie Mitchell, theatre's harbinger of doom, "the princess of darkness", is known for being one of the most serious and uncompromising of British theatre directors. Her productions – Bruckner's Pains of Youth, say, or Euripides' Women of Troy – involve intense rehearsal periods and scour the depths of human emotion and behaviour. She enjoys using the word "rigorous" and mentioning Stanislavski and "complex psychological ideas". She is inspired by eastern European theatre, in particular the work of Pina Bausch; her favourite film is Tarkovsky's plotless The Mirror (1975); she cites Rothko as her favourite artist. So she is not necessarily the first person you would imagine directing a children's show, Beauty and the Beast (age group eight to 12), complete with insect orchestras and goldfish-swallowing,...

The Pet Shop Boys have written the musical score for ballet The Most Incredible Thing. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have joined up with London's Sadler's Wells Theatre to create a ballet version of a Hans Christian Andersen story. Ivan Putrov, the principal of The Royal Ballet, asked the musicians to write a score four years ago. According to the Metro, the pair said: "In the past, we have written music for the club dancefloor so to write music for the ballet stage seems like a logical development. Also we have always (more)...

This week on DVD, George Clooney and Meryl Streep are tunneling underground while Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe hit the road. And why is James Mason flipping out?

My favorite film of 2009, animated or otherwise, was Wes Anderson's delightful Fantastic Mr. Fox, which felt like the idiosyncratic filmmaker finally finding the perfect outlet for his precisely art-directed worldview. Based on the story by Roald Dahl, Fox follows a community of animals (besides Clooney and Streep, the voice cast includes Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, and Willem Dafoe) uniting together against a trio of vermin-hating farmers. With a lovely song score that includes everything from Burl Ives to the Beach Boys to Jarvis Cocker, it's a film that will enchant viewers of all ages.

British dance duo Pet Shop Boys have played a special one-off concert to celebrate the Brit Awards' 30th anniversary - performing in a fan's living room. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe were asked to play a set to honor the 30th year of the prestigious U.K. music event, at which they won an outstanding achievement honor in 2009.
And they decided to surprise fan Lorraine Sands with an intimate gig at her home in Twickenham, England. Tennant said, "It's amazing how much you can do in such a relatively small space compared with a stage. That was the whole point of it, to recreate an arena production, or elements of it anyway, in the intimate environment of a living room."
Sands was chosen at random after entering a contest. The footage will be shown during the awards show in London on February 16.

Ever since the mid-1980s, the Pet Shop Boys have seen the world as a London dance floor. They're nearly as celebrated for their smart, chilly dance pop ("West End Girls," "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)") and their arch cover versions ("Always on my Mind," "Where the Streets Have No Name"). The duo, Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant, met in 1981, and a lot has changed in 28 years. But their 10th album, Yes, new this spring, is typically complex and passionate, blending delightful experimentation with masterful pop. Tennant spoke with WalletPop about how the Pet Shop Boys' work has documented social history, how to make a living with music videos no longer appearing on MTV, and musicians' latest professional challenges. Q: What's the meaning of "Love, etc.," the first single on your new album? A: In our society, we celebrate the market...

Chris Lowe has complained about the planned introduction of ID cards and prevalence of CCTV cameras in Britain. The Pet Shop Boys keyboard player told thelondonpaper that the number of cameras installed in the UK makes the country seem like a Cold War-era prison in the Ussr.
