Production designer Donald Graham Burt and set decorator Jan Pascale took home statuettes for their work on Mank, at the Academy Awards on Sunday.
The Oscar win was Burt’s second, following his triumph in 2008 with David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. A first-time winner, set decorator Pascale was previously nominated in 2006, for her work on George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck.
While Burt didn’t give a speech, Pascale paid thanks to director David Fincher, producer Ceán Chaffin, and Burt “for trusting me with this amazing project.”
“It was such an honor to work with such an amazing group of people. Thank you to my crew, who worked their tails off on this just to make it right,” she said. “When I was young, I never realized that this was a career that was even a possibility. Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.
“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.
“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

Some 70 women representing a record total of 76 overall nominations have been nominated for Oscars this year, a very encouraging statistic for the Academy and the industry.
In honor of this, Academy Museum trustee Diane von Furstenberg and the Academy Museum have released a video (click the link above to watch) celebrating the women nominees of the 93rd Oscars. In a year that posed exceptional challenges to filmmaking, it is especially important to uphold the tradition launched seven years ago to honor talented women filmmakers who continue to break glass ceilings in the entertainment industry.
This year’s women nominees were asked to submit short videos or statements about their film and/or creative process. Cohost von Furstenberg, designer; Jacqueline Stewart, chief artistic and programming officer, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Cynthia Erivo, actor, singer, and producer, and Dawn Hudson, CEO, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, present a video...

The films competing for the 2021 Best Production Design Oscar are “The Father,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” and “Tenet.” Our odds currently indicate that “Mank” (31/10) will be the winner, followed in order by “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (4/1), “News of the World” (9/2), “The Father” (9/2), and “Tenet” (9/2).
Set decorator Karen O’Hara (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) previously prevailed for “Alice in Wonderland” (2011) after first receiving a bid for “The Color of Money” (1987). She has now earned a spot on the list of 12 most-nominated female set decorators, which includes last year’s champion, eight-time nominee Nancy Haigh. O’Hara could become the third of the dozen to win more than once, after Francesca Lo Schiavo and Haigh.
“Mank” production designer Donald Graham Burt is also a previous champ for his work in another David Fincher film, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2009). This is also the second bid for Burt’s set-decorating partner,...

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

At the 2018 Oscars, Frances McDormand, who’d just won her second Best Actress Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” asked all the female nominees to stand. Ten women will always be nominated by the academy: five for Best Actress and another five for Best Supporting Actress. Besides these other nine women, how many others were on their feet in the Dolby Theater?
Forty-seven women other than actresses were nominated for those 90th Academy Awards. Of these, only four won Oscars. By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated and 32 took home statuettes. Of the 20 non-gender specific categories, women were contenders in 17 of them; they were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men).
At last year’s Academy Awards, 53 women other than actresses were nominated as were 159 men. Women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories compared to 23.73% in 2018. Thirteen...

At this year’s Academy Awards, 15 women won while 36 men (some multiple times) made their way to the stage of the Dolby Theater (these figures include the two men and two women are always guaranteed to win the acting awards). That marks a big increase from last year when the gender gap saw just 6 women winners versus 34 men. Scroll down to see the names of the 13 women who won at the 2019 Oscars besides actresses Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”).
This year, 53 women other than actresses were nominated at the 91st Academy Awards. With 159 men in contention, this meant that women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories (there will always be 10 women and 10 men nominated for the acting awards). At last year’s Oscars women represented 23.73% of the nominees in the 20 non-gender specific categories. Forty-seven women numbered among the contenders in those 17 races.

Production designer Nathan Crowley was strolling through the Brooklyn Navy Yard during the shoot for “The Greatest Showman” in fall 2016 when he passed a building with a 3D printer printing a chair.
“The lady inside told me it was a machine from BigRep,” recalls Crowley. “I said, ‘When’s the last time you had a filament jam?’ She said, ‘About a month ago.’ And I was like, ‘Ok, I need that machine.’”
Crowley didn’t get to use it for “The Greatest Showman,” but he rented two BigRep One models for his next film, director Damien Chazelle’s “First Man,” rounding out an arsenal of 18 3D printers used make everything from knobs and joysticks for the lunar module that puts Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) on the moon to a 14-foot-tall scale model of a Saturn V rocket.

Screenwriter Tony McNamara and production designer Fiona Crombie have scored their first Academy Award nominations for director Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite.
McNamara and co-writer Deborah Davis are in contention for best original screenplay while Crombie is nominated for best production design, shared with her colleague Alice Felton for set decoration.
Fox Searchlight’s The Favorite and Netflix’s Roma lead the field with 10 nominations apiece, followed by Warner Bros’ A Star Is Born and Annapurna Pictures’ Vice with eight.
Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther scored seven, although not for director Ryan Coogler, and Focus Features’ BlacKkKlansman got six.
The contenders for best picture are Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born and Vice.
Advocates for gender equality will be incensed about the total absence of nominations for female directors, cinematographers, film editors, composers and visual effects artists.

For over 90 years, the Academy Awards has been the main source of accommodating those achievements with their illustrious golden statue and the prestige of being known as an "Academy Award-winner". For some, though, just being nominated is a special accolade, in and of itself.
