Hidden behind the membership-only barrier of The Disney Movie Club is a long-delayed, long-missed key feature from The Mouse, Walt’s masterful super-production of the timeless Jules Verne classic. Despite the funny songs and an annoyingly ‘ork-ork’-ing sea lion, the lavishly filmed show embraces the dark side of Verne’s vision — Captain Nemo is nothing less than an anti-Colonial terrorist, waging a one-submarine war against international warmongers. With the commanding James Mason in the role, the film’s furious politics are as impressive as the to-die-for art direction: this Disney family attraction has us rooting for the terrorist and against the Imperialist European powers.

The ‘other’ Hollywood studio version of the Alamo story is quite good, with strong production values, exciting stunt battle action and something Republic Pictures didn’t manage very often, a solid screenplay. Sterling Hayden is Jim Bowie, this version’s central hero, with great backup from Anna Maria Alberghetti, Ernest Borgnine, J. Carrol Naish, and Ben Cooper. But best of all is that old hay-shaker Arthur Hunnicutt, as the movies’ best and most natural Davy Crockett.

Sarah Paulson is in talks to join the cast of the film adaptation of “The Goldfinch,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap. Ansel Elgort and Aneurin Barnard also star, with John Crowley directing. “The Goldfinch” is based on Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer-winning book of the same name. It tells the story of a young man named Theodore Decker (who will be played by Elgort), who survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum. He survives the tragedy and steals Fabritius’ famous painting “The Goldfinch.” The attack killed his mother, so he is forced to live in Las Vegas with his.

Is it a classic? Well, not exactly, but it’s also not a typical disappointing ’40s Z-picture. Screenwriter Leigh Brackett pens a nice twist on the Dracula motif, and actor John Abbott is genuinely impressive as what is surely the most low-key vampire on the books. Plus a sexy dance from Adele Mara!

The world will finally get to see Roger Deakins’ latest visual masterpiece when “Blade Runner 2049” opens in theaters this Friday, but the legendary cinematography isn’t taking any moment to rest after working on the Denis Villeneuve sequel for the last year. The 68-year-old Dp has confirmed to Variety that he’s gearing up to shoot “The Goldfinch” next, in which principal photography begins in January. Deakins’ prep on the film begins in a couple weeks.
“The Goldfinch” is an adaptation of the 2013 bestseller by Donna Tartt. Warner Brothers and Amazon Studios have teamed up for the film adaptation, which will be directed by “Brooklyn” helmer John Crawley. Ansel Elgort has been offered the lead role, according to multiple reports, but no official casting announcements have been made by the studio. The plot tells the story of Theodore Decker, a young man who survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum.

Robot roll call! This also-ran robotic fantasy from the 1950s is precisely the kind of movie one would expect from Republic, a two-fisted anti-Commie tract for juveniles. The studio comes up with an impressive robo-hero, but short-changes us when it come time for action thrills. Still, as pointed out in Richard Harland Smith’s new commentary, Tobor filled the the kiddie hunger for sci-fi matinees, at least until Robby the Robot came along.

This charming Roy Rogers oater could reboot interest in vintage ‘series’ westerns. Basically a film for little kids, it’s earnestly played by all concerned and director William Witney’s direction sparkles. The added filip that makes the difference is the beautifully restored Trucolor image — Roy’s wonder horse Trigger is indeed magnificent. I listened carefully, but I don’t think Roy actually says, “Yippie-ki-yay, M_____f____r.”

Welcome to the weird, irresistible world of Republic Serials, an art form with rules of content and conduct that have no resemblance to other movies, or any reality we know. "The Phantom Ruler" has plans for world conquest, so get ready for a punch-out every five minutes and a terrific Lydecker miniature special effect in almost every episode. Richard Webb and Aline Towne star, but we love the bad guys, because they try so hard and fail so consistently. At last, someone has paid proper tribute to Howard and Theodore Lydecker, the legendary siblings who created unforgettable visual effects for Republic Pictures’ action-packed serials, westerns, and feature films during the studio’s heyday. Henderson is a devotee of those Saturday matinee favorites, but unlike most of us, he grew up knowing Theodore Lydecker’s son George. This enabled him to meet one of the famous brothers, and gave him latter-day access to the family and its collection of behind-the-scenes photos. It’s those photographs that make this book so valuable, along with the younger Lydecker’s anecdotes about his father’s work. Henderson’s...
