One of the most beloved characters on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is Spike, a punk rock vampire who falls in love with the Slayer he set out to kill. Spike was a hugely charismatic force and, despite series creator Joss Whedon's best efforts, he quickly became a romantic character. The British bad-boy was supposed to be killed off immediately, but he became such a fan favorite that the writers had to figure out what to do with him for the rest of the series. The audience loved Spike because he wasn't just a misfit among misfits — he owned it. From his slick-back blond hair to his leather trench coat, Spike was everyone's favorite outcast.
James Marsters was originally only supposed to play Spike for 5 episodes, the actor explained in a 2012 interview. Keeping the punk rock vamp in the series challenged the central message of the show, so the series...

Joining a long line of filmmakers who’ve fictionalized their comings-of-age in one regional punk scene or another, veteran New Zealand writer-director Jonathan Ogilvie turns the clock back to 1979 Christchurch in “Head South.” Its protagonist is the classic shy but would-be rebellious teen boy dared into starting his own band, whose first gig naturally provides an underdogs-triumphant climax. Pleasant but awfully thin, feeling like a short insufficiently fleshed out to feature length, this modest nostalgic exercise provides a lightweight opener to this year’s Rotterdam fest.

Summer light fades to gold in Malibu. Surfers carve tasty waves just down the road. A beautiful woman wanders toward the pool house. She crosses paths with a sweet dog heading the opposite way looking for an ear rub.
Diet Cokes are poured at Sean Penn’s house. Small talk is made about how the coffee table in his living room looks like a junk drawer just exploded on it. There are sunglasses, prescription bottles and a device that shoots salt at mosquitoes. Nearby are photos of famous people, all smoking. They are opposite a poster for “A Man Called Adam,” a Sammy Davis Jr. film directed by Leo Penn, Sean’s father.

John Lennon discussed Paul & Paula’s “Hey Paula” and several other songs on an episode of a famous television show. In his typical fashion, the “Imagine” singer proved hard to please. However, he didn’t attack every song played on the show.

On the show, John was asked to judge Elvis Presley’s “(You’re the) Devil in Disguise,” Tom Glazer’s “On Top of Spaghetti,” Julie Grant’s “Don’t Ever Let Me Down,” Miriam Makeba’s “The Click Song,” and Paul & Paula’s “First Quarrel.”

Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" is one of cinema's most treasured performances. Ledger completely transforms his voice and body to inhabit the role of a homicidal maniac. From his crooked, erratic stride to the constant licking of his lips, his character constantly buzzes with frantic energy — eager to cause disruption and destruction with his vicious schemes. As he explains, he's like "a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it!" In the bizarre way he carries himself, we can easily see Heath Ledger's inspirations for the role, as Christopher Nolan discusses in Gothamist and The Hollywood Reporter.
One of his biggest influences for the Joker was Alex DeLarge from "A Clockwork Orange," another outcast who enjoys disturbing the social order with violence and mayhem. Both characters have an unsettling charm in their physicality — especially their sly smiles and transfixing,...

John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, once famously sang of “No Feelings,” but when it comes to artificial intelligence, the punk icon has very strong feelings. Mainly, he doesn’t like the direction in which it’s heading.
The Sex Pistols/Public Image Ltd. frontman discussed his views on the use of AI in a new interview with The Guardian, and he had words of warning regarding its suddenly rampant use in everyday life.
“Who’s in charge and who’s feeding the information and giving the guidelines to these artifices?” Lydon questioned. “What or where is the moral code? It has infiltrated young people’s minds now to the point of total domination. What will this create?”
He then offered up his solution — a gradual cleansing of AI from daily life.
“My advice is make small steps against this — and get that fucking Siri or whatever out of your house.

Legendary British punk rock band Sex Pistols’ singer Johnny Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten has called police over a woman allegedly stalking him. As per ‘The Daily Mail’, the 67-year-old English musician has said that a woman has been dropping letters constantly in the mailbox of his Los Angeles home since last month and he later came face-to-face with her after she trespassed on his property by gaining access to his backyard.
That’s when Johnny claims he started getting phone calls from her – and that’s when he decided to file a stalking report with the sheriff’s department, which is now being investigated.
He is still reeling from the loss of his wife Nora Forster – who died in April aged 80 after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Public Image Ltd. are back with “Car Chase,” a new single from their upcoming album End of World. Listen to the song below.
“Car Chase” is something of a twisted dance song, with rumbling bass and driving synths shaking under John Lydon’s booming voice. In the verses, he barks a tale of a mental institution patient escaping the facility for a night on the town.
“Typical PiL, unpredictable to the last,” Lydon said of the single. “It’s a fantastic smash-and-grab of a song. It’s about someone who cleverly breaks out of the mental institution every night, unbeknownst to his owners. It’s based on having to go to shopping malls at night for cigarettes and wine and seeing the vast carpark space and lighting surrounded by a little village and a lot of dark trees and country lanes. It’s a really creepy scenario, what if somebody creeps out of there,...

Bruno Tonioli caused quite the scene on his first ever episode of Britain’s Got Talent, after replacing David Walliams on the judging panel.
The former Strictly Come Dancing judge appeared on the show for the first time last night (15 April), having never watched it before.
He is now a regular judge alongside Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell.
Because he’d never seen the ITV show, Tonioli didn’t realise that he was supposed to press his red buzzer to reject hopeful contestants mid-audition. Instead, he did it after they’d finished. “No, you don’t have to do that as well,” Cowell told him, while laughter could be heard from the audience.
Tonioli also pressed his golden buzzer in the middle of an act’s audition (though he was meant to wait until it was finished). This meant that while Ugandan dance troupe Ghetto Kids were still performing,...

He continued: “What does it really mean? Most Black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”

Guy Ritchie is reportedly being sued over his film The Gentlemen, with writer Mickey De Hara claiming that Ritchie copied scenes from a script he had submitted to the director.
The 2020 gangster movie follows a kingpin called Mickey (Matthew McConaughey), who tries to sell off his marijuana empire. Read The Independent’s one-star review here.

Ja Rule has distanced himself from a follow-up to Fyre Festival, after Billy McFarland, the creator behind the disastrous event, teased its possible return.
In 2017, McFarland was at the centre of a scandal in which ticket holders were lured to a “luxury music festival” held on Pablo Escobar’s former private island in the Bahamas, with Migos and Blink-182 booked to perform.
The event, which Rule co-founded, was a catastrophe. “Deluxe housing” actually turned out to be disaster-relief tents, and attendees were served soggy cheese sandwiches. Many of the musical acts didn’t turn up, and ticketholders were left stranded on the island.
In 2018, McFarland pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud, was sentenced to six years in prison – but was released early in March 2022 – and ordered to pay back £23m to festival investors. The entire scandal around the festival was the subject of two documentaries, including one by Netflix.

Jack Nicholson’s fans are defending him on social media after the first sighting of the actor in 18 months.
In January, there had been reports that Nicholson’s friends were concerned for the actor’s wellbeing after he wasn’t seen in public for more than a year.
On Thursday (13 April), unflattering pictures of Nicholson, 85, were published in a British tabloid, showing him wearing an orange T-shirt and looking sleepy on the balcony of his Beverly Hills home.
“When you’re Jack Nicholson, 85, you can look however the f*** you want to look,” one fan tweeted.
“He’s 85. Why not leave Jack Nicholson alone?” added another.
A third posted: “Leave Jack Nicholson alone. He’s 85.”
“I looked like this when I woke up this morning… I’m 37,” wrote a fourth, while a fifth added: “Jack Nicholson is still alive. He’s 85. I identify with this look. This look is my spirit animal.

Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon has shared his thoughts about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, following Prince Harry’s confirmation of attendance at King Charles III’s coronation next month.
The British-born punk musician, also known by his stage name Johnny Rotten, lives just 60 miles away from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Montecito, California home. After the couple stepped down as senior working royals in 2020, the two relocated their family to Markle’s home state of California. Since then, they’ve shared several bombshell revelations about their time in the royal family – from their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, to their six-part Netflix docuseries, to Harry’s memoir, Spare.
In an interview with The Telegraph published on 12 April, Lydon expressed his sympathy with Harry and Meghan’s decision to leave the United Kingdom. However, he admitted that he doesn’t “like the noise they’re making” since walking away from the royal family.

The Wire actor Lance Reddick‘s lawyer has disputed the findings of his death certificate.
Reddick, whose credits also included the TV shows Fringe and Bosch, as well as the John Wick film franchise, died suddenly on 19 March. He was 60.
According to Reddick’s death certificate, which was obtained by TMZ, he died of ischemic heart disease and atherosclerotic coronary artery disease.
However, Reddick’s lawyer, speaking on behalf of his family, said the conclusions drawn by the autopsy do not make sense as Reddick was “the most physically fit person I’ve ever known”.
James Hornstein said Reddick worked out daily at home and had a strict diet, adding that when he was away for work, he requested “the availability of gym facilities” as part of his “contractual requirement”.
Hornstein added: “The information appearing on the death certificate is wholly inconsistent with his lifestyle.

The One Show host Alex Jones has claimed her ex Steve Jones once lied to stop her from interviewing Angelina Jolie.
Alex, who dated fellow TV presenter Steve from 1999 to 2002, recorded an appearance on Dish podcast with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, in which she revealed the lengths her former partner went to prevent her from getting the interview gig – a betrayal that led to their break-up.
At the time, Alex was working as an entertanment correspondent for the Channel 4 series Rise.

A number of actors, comedians and TV personalities have joined the voices condemning the Labour party’s controversial new campaign advert.
The ad bears a picture of prime minister Rishi Sunak, alongside the words: “Do you think adults convicted of sexually assaulting children should go to prison? Rishi Sunak doesn’t.”
To justify the claim, the advert cites the fact that “under the Tories”, 4,500 adults convicted of sexually assaulting children under the age of 16 had served no prison time.
The statistic is based on data going back to 2010, when Sunak was yet to even become an MP and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer was serving as Director of Public Prosecutions.
The advert was shared by Labour’s main account and retweeted by a number of several Labour figures, including Starmer’s Director of Strategy. It was met with outrage from many across the political spectrum.
Actor and director Samuel West wrote: “Please withdraw this.

“That’s many years away, though,” he added. “I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”
There are likely to be a number of hurdles facing any prospective crossover: Marvel is owned by Disney, while DC...

“I just happened to be the dummy standing on the dang track a little bit, seeing if my nephew was there. You shouldn’t be outside the vehicle when you’re operating it, you know what I mean?...

Coolio’s 28 September 2022 death was caused by an accidental overdose of fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine, a coroner has ruled.
No cause of death was given at the time when the “Gangsta’s Paradise” rapper was found dead at a friend’s house in Los Angeles, California.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner report, which was seen by People, also reportedly listed cardiomyopathy unspecified, asthma and recent phencyclidine use as other significant conditions that contributed to his death.
Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart that makes it harder for the heart muscle to pump blood to the rest of the body.
TMZ first reported the news of the coroner’s ruling, adding that – according to family spokesperson Jarel (Jarez) Posey – Coolio’s next of kin plan to honour him through documentaries and film.

John Leguizamo has bluntly explained why he will not be watching The Super Mario Bros Movie.
In November, the Latin actor criticised the casting of Chris Pratt and Charlie Day in the animated film, which is out on Friday (7 April).
Leguizamo, who played Luigi in a 1993 live-action film based on the video game, described the casting as “backwards”.
Now, he has said there is no way he’ll be watching the new version, stating “hell no” when asked.
“I will not [be watching],” he told TMZ, adding: “They could’ve included a Latin character.”
Leguizamo continued: “They stopped the ground-breaking. They messed up the inclusion; they dis-included. Just cast some Latin folk.
“We’re 20 per cent of the population. The largest people of colour group and we are underrepresented.”
Speaking about his former role in November, Leguizamo highlighted the lengths the 1993 film’s directors, Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton, went to in...

John Lydon has announced the passing of his wife, Nora Forster.
Forster, Lydon’s wife of 44 years, had been living with Alzheimer’s since 2018. In recent years, Lydon largely retired from music in order to care for his wife.
A German publishing heiress, Forster hailed from Munich. In her early 20s, she worked as a local music promoter for artists like Jimi Hendrix and Yes. She also had a daughter named Ariane with German singer Frank Forster. Ariane, better known as Ari Up, went on to front the punk band The Slits. Following Up’s passing from breast cancer in 2010, Forster and Lydon became the guardians of her three children.
In the mid-1960s, Forster relocated to London and became something of a financial backer for UK punk bands like The Clash and Lydon’s Sex Pistols. She and Lydon later married in 1979.
Earlier this year, Lydon and his band Public Image Ltd.
