Farley Granger "didn't fear the homoerotic subtext of either of the films he did for Hitchcock," writes Farran Nehme in the run-up to the For the Love of Film III Blogathon. "Mind you, in his autobiography Granger says he spent years disappointing critics and interviewers when asked about discussions with Hitchcock about just what was going on between Rope's two main characters: 'What discussions? It was 1948.' That didn't mean, though, that Granger himself and co-star John Dall were clueless." And as for Strangers on a Train (1951): "Given a role of ambiguous morality, he increases the questions about the character, rather than trying to emphasize the good-Guy qualities."
Charles Lyons for Filmmaker on Annette Insdorf's Philip Kaufman: "The first book-length assessment of Kaufman's oeuvre, which will reach 14 films when Hemingway and Gellhorn premieres on HBO in May [it also screens Out of Competition at Cannes], Philip Kaufman is a shrewd and very readable study.

Horror prequel Paranormal Activity 3 easily frightened off all comers on this World Series weekend with a mighty $54 million take. Charles Lyons reports.Paramount spooked the box-office for an estimated $54 million, with its micro-budget-turned-macro-franchise, Paranormal Activity 3 (72% Tomatometer), slashing competition for the weekend crown, while incredulously becoming the biggest horror opening in history. The victory, which breathes life into a limp fall box-office, also brings Paramount the highest October opening ever, ahead of its own Jackass 3D. With 60% of its audience under 25 years old, the $5-million film achieved its para-spectacular opening with a marathon-sized $26.2 million for Friday night and $8 million from midnight screenings alone. That catapulted the slash fest past Hugh Jackman-starrer, Real Steel, which held the top box-office ...

On its second go-round, family actioner Real Steel, starring Hugh Jackman and superb visual effects, trounced familiar updatings of the dance musical Footloose and horror classic The Thing. Charles Lyons reports; top ten box office chart is below. Disney/DreamWorks holdover Real Steel out-stepped Paramount’s remake of the 1984 cult classic Footloose to win the box office crown for the second week in a row. Universal’s remake of John Carpenter’s The Thing was scary enough for third place in its opening frame. None of the three new releases this weekend—Footloose, The Thing, and The Big Year – energized a thus-far lackluster fall box-office season, with last week’s robot-movie, Real Steel, which is playing well to families and young males, outperforming its biggest challenger, Footloose. The Disney/ ...
