The most audacious aspect of Max’s “Julia” (now in its second season) is that Julia Child might not be the most accomplished real-life character in it. That might be Bebe Neuwirth’s Avis DeVoto, who, with husband Bernard, helped save the national forests from the U.S. government. Or maybe it’s Judith Jones (Fiona Glascott), who pulled a book out of a slush pile and thus became responsible for publishing “The Diary of Anne Frank,” among other accomplishments that include the English translations of Sartre and Camus. Then again, it might be Blanche Knopf (Judith Light), the powerhouse publisher who co-founded Knopf with her husband and helped elevate the mystery genre to high art by publishing everyone from Dashiell Hammett to Ross Macdonald.

The 1975, a band whose members are no strangers to real-life carnage, recreated fictional scenes of horror from movies at their Halloween concert at a venue with the comically unscary name of the Little Caesars Arena (horror! horror!) in Detroit. Their “Halloween Party,” according to NME, included callbacks to American Psycho, The Ring, and The Blair Witch Project.
Some of the horrors began after the band performed “About You.” Huey Lewis and the News’ “Hip to Be Square” came over the Pa, and singer Matty Healy was seen dressing like Patrick Bateman,...

When the 1975 goes off-grid following the conclusion of the Still… At Their Very Best tour, it won’t mark the end of the band itself. Earlier this week, Matty Healy told an audience in Sacramento that an “indefinite hiatus of shows” has been planned following the run of concerts. Two days alter, in San Jose, the frontman clarified: “I didn’t mean to scare any hardcore fans by insinuating that we were splitting up or anything like that. That’s not happening. Don’t worry about that.”

Matty Healy made a surprise announcement during a tour stop in Sacramento, California — The 1975 is going on an “indefinite hiatus” after it wraps its current tour.
The band kicked off the North American leg of its tour on Tuesday night at the Golden 1 Center, where Healy triggered an audible gasp after announcing the news. Video captured at the concert and later shared on social media shows Healy with his white dress shirt fully unbuttoned, holding a guitar and rubbing his face as he delivers the news.
“We love coming to this place and playing for you guys whenever we have the chance, and it’s wonderful you’re all here,” he said. “After this tour, we will be going on an indefinite hiatus of shows, so it’s wonderful to have you guys with us tonight.”

London, Aug 12 (Ians) British pop band 1975 got themselves in a controversy in Malaysia, as the country’s organiser of ‘Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival’ is seeking over $2 million in damages from the group after frontman Matty Healy protested on-stage against the country’s anti-lgbtq+ laws, resulting in the cancellation of the event.
According to Variety, the cancellation resulted in numerous bands and small businesses on the bill, which included both local artists and global acts such as the Strokes refusing to participate.
A legal counsel for ‘Future Sound Asia’, which is the agency behind Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival, issued a letter addressing a “breach of contract” by 1975 which stated that the band due to violating the contract must provide compensation for the agency’s losses after the cancellation of the annual, three-day event.
According to a letter which was issued on August 8, 1975 have only a few days to pay the compensation.

Linda Haynes, who notably appeared in films including “Coffy,” “Rolling Thunder,” “The Drowning Pool” and “Brubaker,” died July 17 in South Carolina — the news had not spread widely until Friday. She was 75.
“It is with great sadness that I report that my mother, Linda Haynes Sylvander has passed away, peacefully at home,” her son Greg Sylvander wrote on Facebook on Friday. She had moved to South Carolina three years ago to live with Greg. “As an only child, I have dreaded these times my entire life. I find peace in the knowing that my mother was at peace and had the most beautiful life these final years together with her grandchildren, Courtney Sylvander and I. We are going to miss my mom immensely.”
Haynes’ first film was 1969’s “Latitude Zero,” an international co-production directed by legendary Japanese filmmaker Ishirō Honda. The movie co-starred Joseph Cotton and Cesar Romero, among others. It was in the 1970s,...

The 1975 are expected to face legal consequences after frontman Matty Healy called out Malaysia’s anti-lgbtq laws during their controversial performance at Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur last month.
After venting between songs about Malaysia’s “fucking ridiculous” criminalization of homosexuality, Healy shared an extended kiss with bandmate Ross MacDonald, causing The 1975’s set to be cut short and prompting Malaysian government to cancel the rest of the festival. Now, Future Sound Asia (Fsa) — the organizers of Good Vibes — are preparing to demand financial compensation from the band, or else take legal action in their home country of England.
“The Band’s actions intentionally contravened the agreement they had with Fsa for their

Muse performed a revised setlist in Malaysia one week after the country’s government prematurely canceled a performance by The 1975.
The revision was announced via concert promoter Hello Universe ahead of Muse’s show on July 29th at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium as part of their ongoing “Will of the People” world tour. Concert organizer Adam Ashraf told Rojak Daily, “They called us shortly after [The 1975] incident went global. After discussions, they decided to pull one song out of the setlist due to the title of the song. It’s nice to know they’re eager to entertain while also respecting the guidelines.”
Muse ended up swapping out “We Are Fucking Fucked,” from their 2022 LP Will of the People, and replacing it with “Resistance,” from 2009’s The Resistance.

English band The 1975, and frontman Matty Healy, protested Malaysia’s anti-lgbtq+ laws during a festival performance, and the government subsequently shut the entire festival down as a result.
During their set at the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, Healy kissed his fellow bandmate, Ross MacDonald, and delivered a fiery speech condemning the nation’s homophobic legislation.
“I do not see the f**king point of inviting The 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with,” Healy declared in a speech during the show. “Unfortunately, you don’t get a set of loads of uplifting songs because I’m f**king furious.”
“And that’s not fair on you, because you’re not representative of your government,” Healy added, addressing the audience. “You are young people, and I’m sure a lot of you are gay and progressive, and cool.”

The 1975’s Matty Healy kissed bandmate Ross MacDonald during the band’s set at Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival on Friday. The remainder of the festival was subsequently canceled, and despite Healy’s intentions, some members of Malaysia’s LGBTQ community worry that the incident will do more harm than good.
Homosexuality is outlawed in Malaysia and carries a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years. Because of that, Healy said the band “made a mistake” in agreeing to playing the festival. “When we were booking shows, I wasn’t looking into it,” he told the crowd.

While Joel and Ethan Coen worked on two more features together after Inside Llewyn Davis, many (such as Mia Hansen-Løve) thought the story of an artist trying to find his way after the loss of his partner portended the eventual parting of ways for the brothers. Following Hail, Caesar! and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Joel Coen went solo directing The Tragedy of Macbeth while Ethan Coen helmed a Jerry Lee Lewis documentary and the forthcoming Drive-Away Dolls. Thankfully, it looks the brothers will now reunite for a new project.
As revealed in the current issue of Empire Magazine (via /Film), Ethan Coen said that he’s already working with Joel Coen on developing a new script. He also noted he very much hasn’t “gone solo” as his wife Tricia Cooke not only co-wrote the script for Drive-Away Dolls but also co-directed the film with him, though the Directors...

Matty Healy is lying on a leather couch, smoking a cigarette and running his hand feverishly across his naked chest and onto his crotch. This mid-60s detective story has the right ingredients — a good mystery and interesting characters. David Jannsen gets to play a ‘Bosch’- style lone wolf investigator given a public thrashing for a ‘mistake’ that he knows was no mistake at all. Can a ‘bad cop’ redeem himself? The parade of mid-level guest stars — Stefanie Powers, Joan Collins, Lillian Gish, Steve Allen — may resemble a TV movie, but the tense show has a good feel for Los Angeles and the new swingin’ singles lifestyle. It might be Buzz Kulik’s best job of direction, and it has a great music score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Netflix Teams With Part2 Pictures and Atlas Films for Documentary ‘Get Smart With Money’ (Exclusive)
“Fed Up” director Stephanie Soechtig has teamed up with Part2 Pictures, in association with Atlas Films, to direct the Netflix documentary “Get Smart With Money.”
The personal finance documentary follows several individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds as they examine their spending habits and, with the help of four financial coaches, figure out their financial goals and ways to improve their money mindset. The four coaches include Peter Adeney (aka Mr. Money Mustache), Tiffany Aliche (aka The Budgetnista), Ross MacDonald (aka Ro Mac) and Paula Pant of Afford Anything.
In a statement, Soechtig said: ”Somehow we have ended up with an education system that teaches us the fundamentals of square dancing, yet fails to teach us the fundamentals about how to manage our money. Editors’ Note: Part of an editor’s challenge now is to hatch stories, including some that take readers’ minds off layoffs and hardship. An oft-told tale last Oscar season was how Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro nixed a green light for The Winter of Frankie Machine to make The Irishman. So I asked Don Winslow, author of that terrific novel, to write his side of that Hollywood experience. While Stephen King routinely sees his work adapted and re-adapted, most authors find futility. But imagine the heartache when those two icons spurn a major studio green light to instead spend an extra decade on another project about a regretful hit man?
Winslow’s agent/screenwriting partner Shane Salerno delivered from the author a good news/bad news scenario. Winslow would write a whole week’s worth of columns for Deadline, but here’s the catch: I’d have to wear...

On June 1st last year, the 1975 played a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. It was a huge moment for the English pop provocateurs, who had recently broken through in the U.S. with their second full-length LP, 2016’s chart-topping I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It. “There’s a picture of Michael Jackson playing the Garden right before you go on,” says singer-guitarist Matty Healy, 29. “I remember staring at that, thinking, ‘This is fucking crazy.’ ”

William Goldman wrote the way Joe Dimaggio played ball: with such deft and consummate skill that the impossible seemed easy. (It wasn’t. And isn’t.) Reading a Goldman screenplay, you never see the armature, the scaffolding. You see people, real people, just a bit more vivid than they might be were they not in a Goldman movie.
Perhaps because he was a novelist long before he was a screenwriter, his screenplays are writerly. They’re literate without ever being literary. And though Goldman’s dialogue was ferociously memorable – is there a more iconic line in all of cinema than the one in which Inigo Montoya announces his name, his motivation, his intention? — Goldman knew that image creates character creates story. The very first words of Goldman’s very first original screenplay:
He was introducing his protagonist; but he might as well have been describing himself.
Goldman was also a master of exposition.

William Goldman, who won Oscars for his original screenplay for “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and his adaptation of “All the President’s Men,” died on Friday in his Manhattan home, according to the the Washington Post. He was 87.
His daughter Jenny Goldman cited complications from colon cancer and pneumonia as the cause of his death.
“Butch Cassidy,” a revisionist Western that helped popularize the buddy movie, announced Goldman as a screenwriter able to balance big laughs with a sense of adventure, while “All the President’s Men” cemented his status as a deft writer of suspense. The two are considered to be among the finest screenplays ever written and exemplify Goldman’s range and versatility.
In a 2015 interview with Signature, Goldman was asked about his ability to bounce from genre to genre.

Any self-respecting family story needs a flashback. Whether it’s a Ross Macdonald novel finally explaining just what horrible thing happened twenty years ago in Canada or a family saga that stops in the middle of Chapter Two to explain just how Sadie McGuffins first came to the Maritimes from Scotland as a teen domestic servant so many years ago, before too long the narrative needs to roll up its sleeves, dive into the past, and dramatize the things that are still casting a shadow over the present-day cast.
(It’s even required if a family story has no connection to Canada, though I’m not sure if that’s even possible.)
Jeff Lemire’s currently ongoing comic Royal City is a family story. And this second volume, Sonic Youth , is the big flashback — to 1993, when Tommy Pike was still alive.

Ross Macdonald’s Cool Cat detective — originally Lew Archer — comes alive in Jack Smight’s smart SoCal kidnapping mystery, thanks to a charismatic Paul Newman and a hot cast of bright, smart actors. It’s the first screenplay sale for the celebrated William Goldman, and the crisp cinematography by ace cameraman Conrad Hall doesn’t hurt either.

For many years the Coen Brothers have often teased their press and fans in regards to sequels to their previous works, something they have yet to do to date.
The most common rumors have circled around actor John Turturro reprising arguably his two most iconic roles from their films together - a follow-up to "Barton Fink" and a "Big Lebowski" spin-off centering on his character Jesus.
The latter is mostly due to the actor himself who has expressed a desire to do it, but the Coens themselves seem to have no interest. Ethan Coen tells Empire (via The Playlist): "Turturro keeps urging us to do the 'Jesus' spin-off of his character. Yeah, uh huh" with Joel Coen adding: "People have been asking us about a sequel to 'The Big Lebowski,' for years, but I don't think it's going to happen."

From a pop culture perspective, private detectives stand for all that’s memorable about film noir. The indifference, the wittiness, and the moral ambiguity that define each urban knight has since become the stuff of parodied legend. We’re talking about the mediators between the crooks and the cops, the embodiment of back alley grayness that’s so tough to pin down. P.I.’s could cooperate with the law if needed, but they could just as soon do business with the bad guys for the right price. To a certain extent, that is – shamus work has always attracted the ignored and the ethical. The Wild West has mythical men with no name, The Asphalt Jungle has names with investigating licenses attached to them. Instead of a poncho and a ten gallon hat, they’re provided a fedora and trench coat.

In modern cinema, the Coen Brothers are giants. Having created classic after classic, these filmmakers are now the stuff of legend – writing, directing and producing films that are among the most original and fascinating ever made, while inspiring new creative projects from others, such as the Fargo TV series. It is understandable, then, that the world jumps to attention when their new projects are announced. Today is no exception, as it is apparently the case that Warner Bros. has optioned the best-selling 1966 novel Black Money for the intimidating duo to adapt, with Joel Silver co-producing.
Black Money is the perfect match for Joel and Ethan Coen, whose body of work includes movies such as Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, Raising Arizona and O Brother Where Art Thou? It’s always a treat to hear what the Coen Brothers are up to. With their latest film Hail, Caesar! having just wrapped, it’s no surprise that the famous duo are looking for a new project. According to Deadline, the Coen Brothers are set to write and possibly direct an adaptation of Kenneth Millar’s crime novel Black Money (which he wrote under the pseudonym Ross Macdonald) for Warner Bros.
The novel itself is part of a series of crime stories centering on Lew Archer, a private detective working out of Southern California (think Philip Marlowe as played by Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep). In this story, Archer is hired by a man rejected by his girlfriend who wants Archer to investigate the man she has run off with, leading Archer into a world of money schemes. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has optioned the rights of Ross Macdonald's 1966 crime novel Black Money for the Coen brothers to write the script with an aim to direct. (Though it is unclear if this will be their next project following the upcoming Hail, Caesar!) The novel follows Lew Archer, Macdonald's running Pi, as he is hired to look into a "suspiciously suave Frenchman" who has run away with his client's girlfriend. Would it be a little too on the nose to cast Olivier Martinez?...

While they often generate their own ideas, Joel and Ethan Coen have been known to base films on other peoples’ work. Warner Bros. has them doing just that, hiring the award-winning sibling duo to adapt Ross MacDonald’s 1966 crime novel Black Money with an eye to possibly directing it.While they haven’t decided whether they will actually make the film themselves, it sounds like something that could have them steering into Blood Simple/Fargo territory, albeit with more of a noir angle than the latter. MacDonald’s book focuses on private eye Lew Archer, who is hired by a jilted lover to investigate the Frenchman who ran off with his girlfriend. As so often happens with tales like this, it’s a case Lew probably wishes he hadn’t started digging into, as he’s soon deep into a conspiracy connecting the boyfriend to a suicide from years ago...

Perhaps you've been wondering what the Coen Brothers have been doing since “Inside Llewyn Davis”? Rather a lot! They’ve got a movie in the can coming out in February of 2016, the Hollywood comedy “Hail, Caesar!” starring George Clooney, Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson. They’ve also been doing a lot of writing, penning Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” screenplay and Steven Spielberg’s upcoming “Bridge of Spies” (they also wrote the “Gambit” remake in 2012). One more writing assignment is coming down the pipeline, and they also could direct the project. Los Bros Coen are going to write an adaptation of Ross MacDonald’s crime novel “Black Money.” If that sounds vaguely familiar, that’s because a movie was already adapted from the book: the same lead character was played by Paul Newman in the very underrated crime thrillers “Harper” (1966) and “The Drowning Pool” (1975). Both look terrific, since they were shot...
