Abramorama has acquired the global theatrical rights — with the exception of the U.K. and Ireland — and direct-to-consumers rights to “Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande,” the award-winning music documentary directed by Tim MacKenzie-Smith. Abramorama will launch its U.S. and Canadian theatrical release in early April, following its upcoming U.K. theatrical release.
“Abramorama is honored to bring Tim MacKenzie-Smith’s heartfelt documentary about the band Cymande to fans around the world. Their music has influenced artists of all genres and is as impactful today as it was when first released. Cymande continues to reach new fans and I think 2024 is going to be a huge year for the band, with sold out concerts around the world, a new record coming out soon, and the global release of their documentary,” Abramorama’s president and head of international distribution Evan Saxon said in a statement.

I’ve been a Hip Hop fan since the early 80s when the likes of Double D and Steinski were around. They pioneered the instrumental cut and paste Hip Hop style with the legendary ‘Lesson’ series of tracks. Years later these were carried on by DJ Shadow and Jurassic 5’s Cut Chemist. However, instrumental Hip Hop has always been the less limelight-hungry member of the Hip Hop family, being comfortable with allowing its Lyric filled brother to take all the attention. I’m not sure if this is because the A&Rs were unsure how to market it or if the whole sample copyright situation just made these songs economically unviable. Whatever the reason, instrumental Hip Hop became more left field and underground than its mainstream brother.
To a certain extent this is a good thing. However, what it does mean is that anyone attempting...

I always hold my breath when I hear DJ Shadow's name. "Entroducing" was just the start of his experiments in hip-hop and electronica, but there's been some patchy contributions along the way. His turn with U.N.K.L.E. was brilliant, his 2006 album "The Outsider" was not. His mix "Diminishing Returns" sounded fresh, his collaborations with Cut Chemist inspired, his remix of Keane a snoozer. So I was a little anxious to hear of a new track out, "Def Surrounds Us." In what Shadow (born Josh Davis) describes as a mix of electro, dub-step and drum 'n' bass, the track swirls around an...

After the triumphant sneak peek of the second season of "Jersey Shore" at Sunday night's MTV Movie Awards, castmember Pauly D has something else to pump his fist about.
The shiny-coiffed Rhode Island native has been nominated among a list of legendary DJs in the annual America's Best DJ competition. Granted, there are 100 names on the list, but the contest encourages fans of club music to vote for their favorite plate spinner, and 2010 marks the first time D has made the list.
While there are plenty of lesser-known DJs on the list, Pauly will be going up against some of the hottest and most-respected names in the game, including Armand Van Helden, Bad Boy Bill, Bassnectar, A-Trak, Carl Craig, BT, Crystal Method, Cut Chemist, Danny Tenaglia,...

Washington State used to be a hotbed of superhero activity. Walla Walla, Washington was the birthplace of Batman’s Adam West. In the 1980s, DC Comics’ Green Arrow hunted serial killers in and about Seattle’s Pioneer Square. In the ’90s, Marvel’s Iron Man moved his base of operations to West Seattle and even saved the Space Needle from Fin Fang Foom! On TV, Jessica Alba’s Dark Angel protected a post-nuclear Seattle from mutants and mercenaries. However, since Dark Angel’s cancellation, the Pacific Northwest has been largely superhero-free. That’s about to change. Film composer Mateo Messina, responsible for the catchy Juno soundtrack and the quirky The Ex List TV show, is returning to his hometown Seattle on Friday, November 6 to present his “Symphony for a Superhero.” It will take place at Benaroya Hall, with proceeds to benefit the Seattle Children’s Hospital. Messina will also be...

The Whip It soundtrack. Not as easy as it looks, this soundtrack compiling malarkey. When I ruminated on which tunes might have trundled their way onto the tie-in record for Drew Barrymore’s roller derby-derived directorial debut Whip It, I got stuck at the grand total of two. The Devo number which shares its title with the Ellen Page-starring movie was one of course, while I also figured that a flick about female roller-skaters represented a most inviting opportunity to smuggle the Anna Karina-trilled/Serge Gainsbourg-penned power pop nugget Roller Girl onto the soundtrack of a major motion picture. But beyond that duo of offerings, I was clean outta ideas. No such difficulties for Whip It’s soundtrack supervisor and long-time Wes Anderson cohort Randall Poster though, as he has managed to er, whip up a 19 song-strong album that arrays veteran stagers next to bright young things,...

Want to hear my Drew Barrymore story? Maybe another time (that’s what we in the business like to call a tease).
We’ve got other news to get to …
Drew Barrymore will host “Saturday Night Live” on October 10 with musical guest Regina Spektor who was featured on the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack. It’s Barrymore’s sixth time hosting the show.
Barrymore told Billboard.com there may be more volumes of the Whip It soundtrack besides the one listed below. She says it would includes songs such as Radiohead’s “No Surprises” and score music by the Section Quartet. A collectible vinyl edition of the soundtrack is due out later this fall.
The soundtrack is looking quite strong with “Pot Kettle Black” being my personal standout.

It's a good day to be a Jurassic 5 fan. Former J5 beatsmith DJ Nu-Mark confirmed that he'll be joining the cast of the "MacGruber" movie. On Twitter. Oh yes, the bane of public relations specialists everywhere strikes again with some casting confirmation straight from the horse's... errr... keyboard. The Tweet is actually a bit more revealing, with Nu-Mark mentioning the ordeal his character will go through. In his own words:
@djnumark: Ahh, gonna be in my first movie! Playin a DJ in the new Mac Gruber movie (from SNL)..lol. Val Kilmer is gonna take my mic from me..lol
So there you have it. Val Kilmer: actor, outdoorsman... mic thief.
Nu-Mark is only one half of the team that mixed beats for the now-defunct southern California hip-hop outfit Jurassic 5. "MacGruber" might be Nu's first movie, but fellow DJ Cut Chemist beat him to Hollywood.

UK Music magazine NME has premiered Marilyn Manson's new video, "Arma-Goddamn-Motherfuckin'-Geddon," on their website. The video promotes the first single from The High End of Low, the new album which is slated to hit stores after Memorial Day. Find out more about the video, and how to see it, after the jump! As we learned a few weeks back from Blabbermouth, the video was directed by filmmaker/photographer Delaney Bishop, whose resume includes videos for hip-hop artists Jurassic 5 and Cut Chemist, as well as the acclaimed short film The Death of Salvador Dali, starring the extremely tasty Dita Von Teese, the former Mrs. Manson. That said, there's nothing in the video that you haven't seen before...

Jump on through for more devilish details! According to the latest news from Blabbermouth, Arma-Goddamn-Motherfuckin'-Geddon (I just love writing that title for some reason) was directed by filmmaker/photographer Delaney Bishop, whose diverse track record includes videos for hip-hop artists Jurassic 5 and Cut Chemist, and who also created the short film The Death of Salvador Dali, starring Manson's totally hot ex-wife Dita Von Teese. As expected, stars and celebrity DJs gathered together at Avalon in La last night to welcome home DJ Am for his first public appearance since his plane crash last month. Mark Ronson, Danny Masterson, and DJ Aoki were just a few who took turns spinning while Am caught up with friends like Hilary Duff and Cisco Adler. Travis Barker sadly couldn't make it to the event since he's still hospitalized, but the proceeds went to the families of the crash victims. We couldn't be happier to see Am healthy and celebrating with his friends while honoring the memory of the other people on the plane. He'll be taking the stage again tonight kicking off Jay-z's tour. More photos including Simon Rex, will.i.am, and Danny Masterson if you read more. Images include: DJ Am, Mark Ronson, Cisco Adler, Schwayze, Will.I.Am, DJ Fashen, Macy Gray, Danny Masterson, Hilary Duff,...
