Earlier this month in James Madison Park in Madison, Wisconsin, a group of like-minded individuals came together to celebrate the death of irony, also known as Shrekfest. For the fourth year in a row, fans of the Dreamworks franchise emerged from their swampy ogre dens to dance, play games, and presumably bum out…

From sequins to 18th-century ruffles, Aladdin’s James Monroe Iglehart is about to embark on another dream: playing the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton. On Sunday, Feb. 19, Iglehart will take his final bow as the Genie on Broadway before moving up four blocks from the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street to the coveted Richard Rodgers Theatre on 46th, where he’ll join the cast of the Alexander Hamilton musical starting mid-April.
While the Genie was famously voiced by Robin Williams in the 1992 animated film, Iglehart has been playing the part since Aladdin’s 2011 out-of- town tryouts in Seattle, which eventually landed in Toronto for a pre-Broadway run in 2013. Night after night, the actor has received roaring applause for his show-stopping rendition of “Friend Like Me,” a number that surely helped him win the 2014 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

Shockingly, I never got around to writing about my favorite piece of pop culture from 2015 as promised. I mean, I've never gotten overloaded with work and let something go before. Thankfully, today I get to rectify that problem because of The Grammys, of all things. Like many people right now, I am completely obsessed with Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton, the musical about Alexander Hamilton and the founding fathers. Also like many people, I have not seen the show and can't imagine when I'll actually be able to get tickets. It's distinctly possible I won't see it until it comes to La in late 2017, and even then, who's to say when I'll be able to get in? It's going to be a bloodbath, because people have fallen head over heels for the thing. It was Matt Zoller Seitz who described it as "Sondheim meets Schoolhouse Rocks," and that is a pretty heady combination of things,...

With Curtain Call, we asked our team what some of their most memorable and satisfactory finales were in the realm of gaming, and these entries are the result. Please note that they may include a bevy of spoilers concerning the endings in question and the plots they pertain to. You’ve been warned!
It’s not how you start, but how you finish. In the case of High Voltage Software’s cheesy sci-fi shooter sequel for the Wii, Conduit 2, you can substitute “start” with “spend ninety-nine percent of the game”, and this axiom still rings true. Why? Because despite a lackluster (though improved) experience fighting alien invaders across the globe while being annoyed by the disembodied voice of Kevin Sorbo now residing in your futuristic battle armor suit, Conduit 2 has an ending that totally nails the utterly ridiculous SyFy Channel nature of its up until then boring, cardboard story. I mean perfectly.

As “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” continues its sleeper hit success, ABC has decided (per Deadline) to produce a limited series focused on a different White House servant, Paul Jennings. Adapted from Elizabeth Dowling Taylor’s “A Slave in the White House,” the show would focus on Jennings, a Virginia-born slave, as he simultaneously acts as President James Madison’s personal valet and as an anti-slavery activist. The show will be written and co-executive produced by “Luv” filmmakers Sheldon Candis and Justin Wilson, with Candis also handling directorial duties as he did on their first film. For now, the show’s only eyed as a 12-hour limited series though, as “Under the Dome” showed, the life of the show can always be extended in the event of runaway success. Fans of fat men falling down, rejoice! Variety is reporting that Kevin James has worked out a deal with Lionsgate to return...

The first day of the 2013 Ncaa men's basketball tournament didn't see too many upsets -- but it did see a pretty huge one as 14-seed Harvard got its first ever March Madness win when the Crimson beat 3-seed New Mexico.

Pacific vs. Miami, 2 p.m., TNT

24/7 Wall St has released a list of the 10 wealthiest U.S. presidents. The figures were calculated in 2010 dollars (except for those presidents still living, since more recent earnings information is available). Hard assets such as land, estimated lifetime savings based on work history, inheritance and homes were all taken into account.
And in case you were wondering, President Obama doesn't even come close to making the list. His net worth is estimated at $7 million.
Here are the Top 10 wealthiest U.S. presidents:
1. George Washington, $525 million
2. Thomas Jefferson, $212 million
3. Theodore Roosevelt, $125 million
4. Andrew Jackson, $119 million
5. James Madison, $101 million
6. Lyndon Johnson, $98 million
7. Herbert Hoover, $75 million
8. Franklin Roosevelt, $60 million
9. Bill Clinton, $55 million
10. John F. Kennedy, $1 billion (never inherited his father's estate)
The site lists JFK as tenth, despite his amount counting as the highest. It writes that although JFK "ever inherited his father's fortune, the Kennedy family estate was worth nearly $1 billion dollars.

Chicago – One of director Tim Burton’s great actor collaborators is the veteran performer Martin Landau. Landau voices Mr. Rsykruski, a science teacher who inspires young Victor Frankenstein in “Frankenweenie,” released on Blu-Ray on January 8th. This is part of Laudau’s magnificent 60 year career in film, television, stage and acting instruction.
It’s difficult to sum up Landau’s career because of it’s depth and breadth. The 84 year old actor was born in Brooklyn, New York, and had an early interest in cartooning for newspapers. He worked as an illustrator for the New York Daily News for five years, before the acting bug bit him. He was in an exceptional era and place for the craft, as Lee Strasberg’s Actor’s Studio was being formulated, and out of the 2000 applicants for 1955 only two were selected – Martin Landau and Steve McQueen. In a timely installment of "The Simpsons" (Sun., 8 p.m. Est on Fox), Homer becomes the voice of the people, earning his own talk show on a network very similar to Fox News. There, he can spout his opinions and say what the common man is thinking, never mind that he's incredibly ill-informed and ignorant on politics.
Lisa sees the inherent danger in his fear-mongering, but can't get through to him. When he finds himself the head of a gravy boat (they wear them like colonial hats -- *wink wink*) movement, he decides to throw his hat into the presidential debate, and backs Ted Nugent. Nugent gamely voiced himself, comically exaggerating his love of hunting and shooting a bow by killing animals indiscriminately and eventually using children as arrows.
Homer finally saw the light, thanks to a James Madison impersonator, and publicly withdrew his support for Nugent, thus dashing the rocker's dreams of becoming president.

Sherri teaches Heroes, Myths and Legends at a San Antonio High School, so perhaps Jared was always destined to play some kind of supernatural hero, heartthrob in some show or other. He was best man at his brother's wedding and was at his sister's graduation from Ut- Austin.

"I'd hate to die young and never have made Grapes of Wrath. Life goes by so fast...I just don't want to miss out on anything." Jon-Erik Hexum Jon-Erik Hexum (he was advised to drop the 'C' in favour of a 'K' as it looked much stronger,) and used to go by the name of Jack; was born November 5 1957 in Englewood, New Jersey. He was 6' 1", and of Norweigan/Icelandic descent. His parents Gretha and Thorleif Hexum separated when he was 5. He had an older brother, Gunnar. The two were raised by their mother, who held down two jobs. Though they couldn't afford to, his mother also bought him a piano. As a child, Jon-Erik took violin, singing and dancing lessons, also playing the baritone horn and was very eager to play Flight of the Bumble Bee after only one lesson on the piano. His interests included writing, cinema, football,...

The G.I. Joe franchise was invented back in the pre-Revolutionary era of Colonial America, when Li’l Tommy Jefferson spent the best summer vacation of his life at sleepover parties with Li’l Georgie Washington and Li’l Johnny Adams, where they would re-enact famous battles from the French and Indian War using wooden figurines cut into human form. Johnny, predictably, would always ruin the fun by accusing Georgie and Tommy of sedition, at which point their cool older cousin Ben Franklin would give Johnny a wedgie. (Kids: This is all true history, as far as you know.) Since then,...

Oddly, when Frank Borzage's oeuvre, most of it long unavailable on home video, started to creep out on DVD, much of what appeared was lesser works from late in his career: no Moonrise, but instead China Doll (1958, released in the UK), and Magnificent Doll (1946, released in Spain). The balance was corrected by the sumptuous Murnau, Borzage and Fox box set (see The Notebook's coverage of that here, here, here, here, here and here).
The Doll diptych would be a doubtful introduction to Borzage's world, but both films are rewarding to the viewer who has already seen a few of the classics. Particularly of note is the way China Doll blatantly recycles a wonderful moment from Street Angel (1928), where the hero holds his cigarette lighter by the heroine's face to see her on a dark night, showing how consistent Borzage's concerns had remained over thirty years.

The "Black and Yellow" Mc's latest tour is a joint effort in conjunction with non-profit Reverb and Pretty Polly Productions as part of its Campus Consciousness Tour series. The relationships between rappers and presidents have always been tenuous at best. Or at least so we thought. This week, there have been two incidents that have united the worlds of hip-hop and presidential politics in ways that nobody really saw coming. Earlier this week, George W. Bush declared that the moment that Kanye West announced "George Bush doesn't care about black people" during a telethon was the lowest point of his presidency. West responded in typical fashion, saying that he related to Bush because they both have been under the same kind scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Bill Clinton tipped his hat to Lil Wayne earlier this week in anticipation of the Mc's release from Rikers Island. "This guy's smart. And he's got abilities," Clinton said. "And he's got a new chance now. And what I hope is that this is not just something to brand him as a cool guy, but...

I wasn't able to travel to Washington D.C for the opening arguments in Schwarzengger v. Ema, but Stephen Totilo was. Kotaku's Deputy Editor has filed a report from the proceedings, where the nine justices of Scotus questioned lawyers on both sides about the kinds of restrictions and protections they would have applied to video games.
[California Attorney General Zackery] Morazzini's opening statement was almost immediately interrupted by Justice Antonin Scalia who pointed out that Grimm's fairy tales are very violent as well.
"So are you going to ban them too?" Scalia asked of the attorney general.
Scalia, one of the court's most conservative justices and most vocal in the questioning of the state today, repeatedly and often with humor questioned Morazznii about the California law and its effects on the first amendment.
"You are asking us to create a whole new prohibition... what's next after violence? Drinking? Movies that show drinking? Smoking?," asked Scalia in the hearing.

Copyright is complicated. The issues aren't black and white, and if you really want to get down to the nitty-gritty, there's a lot of complexity involved in why the current copyright laws were formed, and why it's so important that they be enforced. Economies and industries are complex organisms that even Harvard MBAs have trouble understanding and controlling at times. I understand that it has taken a lot of great minds (beginning with James Madison for crying out loud!) to get the copyright laws in this country to where they are now. I'm always baffled by how many people who've perhaps read about an issue for five minutes or so have immaturely lashed out at an industry they barely understand, just because they want something for free, and the owner of that something wants them to pay for it. Some,...

Washington, April 8 – Given an option, men prefer one-night stand (‘hooking up’) to dating, while women prefer dating with the prospect of a relationship to causal sex, a new study has shown.
During the study, Carolyn Bradshaw of James Madison University in Virginia, Us, and colleagues exposed 150 female and 71 male college students to a variety of situations involving dating – when the man asks a women on a date and the woman accepts or rejects any sexual overtures and there is the prospect of a relationship.

This week in PBS Previews 'What to Do if (You or) Your Child is a Drama Queen'
These ideas can help manage the drama, whether it's coming from your child or from you.
Dolly Madison President James Madison's wife, Dolley. Born in relative obscurity before the American Revolution, Dolley's beauty attracted attention, but it was her political acumen that set her apart in a time when women held no overt political power.

Since there's always a first time for everything, I'm going to review before your eyes a documentary. Honestly, Jesus Camp has always given me the feeling that it could have had much more depth. Nonetheless, despite its flaws, the film can be seen as a good exploration of the American evangelical movement provided that you have a good knowledge of American history and laws.
Shot during George W. Bush's second presidential term, Jesus Camp is centred on a group of born-again children. They attend to Pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire Summer Camp" where they're indoctrinated taught to become dedicated Christian "soldiers in God's army". Moreover, these children are expected to be the adults of tomorrow who will play an active role in American political life.
The first thing many might like about Jesus Camp is the fact that directors Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing don't judge evangelical Christians.

The following is a list of accredited, degree-granting acting and dance programs at colleges and universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. It includes schools that grant either a degree in acting, theater, dance, or a degree in another major that has an acting component or concentration. In general, B.A. and M.A. programs are more academic in nature (though they may offer a performance component or concentration), while Bfa and Mfa programs focus on training professional performers. An A.A. is a two-year junior-college degree.
