Showtime has announced that America’s favorite serial killer, “Dexter,” will return for a 10-episode limited series set to premiere next fall. Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall will reprise his role as the title character, Dexter Morgan, reuniting with showrunner and screenwriter Clyde Phillips. So does this mean Hall could finally take home the Emmy that eluded him for five straight years?
SEEAwards spotlight: Showtime’s riveting ‘The Comey Rule’ should propel Jeff Daniels to Golden Globes, SAG and more
Despite winning a Golden Globe and SAG Award in 2010, the celebrated actor was never able to secure the top prize from the television academy. Hall came up short five years in a row, losing three times to Bryan Cranston followed by Kyle Chandler and Damian Lewis. He was also nominated once for Best Drama Series as an executive producer (2011), but lost to “Mad Men.”

What can you say about a hybrid gangster picture that generates a good feeling about people? We really like this show — Robert De Niro, Uma Thurman and Bill Murray’s characterizations are fresh and surprising — and refreshingly non-pc, with David Caruso, Kathy Baker and Mike Starr providing solid backup. Everything’s in fine form under director John McNaughton, as filmed by Robby Müller. And there’s a fascinating story about how parts of the story were re-written and re-shot, after a preview screening.

American Cinema Editors (Ace) today announced nominations for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in ten categories of film, television and documentaries. Winners will be revealed during Ace’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Friday, January 30, 2015 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Next week Ace will announce the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honoree and two Career Achievement honorees.

The American Cinema Editors have taken the time when most of us are still enjoying a little bit of downtime before truly getting back into the swing of things this new year to announce the film and television nominees for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Among the nominees are a couple of personal favorites in Whiplash (Tom Cross) and The Imitation Game (William Goldbenbrrg). I also think something must be said for Boyhood, though editing a film over the course of 12 years doesn't really leave much wiggle room. You're essentially editing 12 short films because once you're a year removed... you're a year removed. There are six nominees in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category as a result of a tie providing for one additional nominee for the second time ever. Among the comedy/musical nominees I would like to believe The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling) would be the front-runner,...

The movie that stitched 12 years of footage into a single narrative, “Boyhood,” has been nominated by the American Cinema Editors as the best-edited dramatic feature of 2014, Ace announced on Friday.
Other nominees for the top dramatic film honor at the awards known as the Ace/Eddies are “American Sniper,” “Gone Girl,” “The Imitation Game,” “Nightcrawler” and “Whiplash.” The category had six nominees instead of five because of a tie.

If you were looking for things to be shaken up a little bit in this year's Oscar race, the American Cinema Editors (Ace) offered a slight jolt Friday with the organization's 65th annual list of nominees for film editing. And if you were wondering if "Nightcrawler" might make a serious play on the circuit, well… I will say I was wondering that. So much so that I had a piece prepped focusing on its potential before today's announcement, which included the film in a dramatic feature category that featured a tie for the first time ever. (The animated field saw a tie yielding four nominees in 2012, while "Babel" and "The Departed" actually tied for the dramatic win in 2006, but there hasn't been a tie leading to an extra nominee in the dramatic or comedy/musical categories before.) Powerhouse Oscar players "Boyhood" and "The Imitation Game" unsurprisingly joined the party, and ditto Sundance hit "Whiplash.

Chicago – Twenty-three years after it was made, and nineteen years after its limited theatrical release, “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer” is as potent and relevant as ever. Filmmaker John McNaughton, along with writing partner Richard Fire, proved that true horror is found not in manufactured scares that jolt the audience like a theme park ride, but in the corrupted mind and soul of an evil being. The film truly is a human “portrait,” since it is more interested in behavior than plot. McNaughton used the true story of a Texas killer named Henry as his inspiration for this masterwork, which still stands as one of the finest and most unsettling independent films ever made.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
There are definite echoes of “Psycho” in the film’s unforgettable opening sequence, where the camera focuses on Henry’s recent victims with a quiet horror that evokes memories of Marion Crane’s...

New York artist George Condo and his incredible paintings, director John McNaughton and his genre-busting filmmaking and the spirits of Aldous Huxley and the Beat Generation writers are the primary ingredients of "Condo Painting", USA Films' provocative and trippy documentary that opens today in New York.
Subverting high art with visual samples from pop culture in his works and on-screen musings, Condo is a self-assured "antipodal" painter, who collaborates with the late William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg in sequences filmed several years ago. Indeed, McNaughton ("Wild Things", HBO's "Lansky") originally set out to make a short film in 1996, but in this expanded project all involved achieve something quite remarkable.
A satisfactory portrait of the 42-year-old artist, "Painting" incorporates the fascinating creation of one of Condo's portraits of an antipodal being -- dubbed "Big Red" and eventually coming to resemble, almost subliminally, the cartoon character Yosemite Sam. Antipode is an old word meaning "exact opposite or contrary." In the context of Condo's work and philosophy, antipodes are invented creatures, whose existence is "in complete independence of our consciousness."
Not the easiest thing to get a handle on, for sure, but "Painting" lives up to its title and shows the artist painting a brightly colored being from his imagination, and then paining over his own work twice. While capturing the artist's unusual process of creation in terrific cinema verite sequences, shot on the fly with a High-8 video camera, McNaughton also uses seemingly every postproduction trick in the book to fracture and then reassemble the film along chronological and thematic fault lines.
Interspersed with Condo's progress on "Big Red" are interesting art-making sequences with Burroughs and Ginsberg. In a film of many startling images and lively ideas, none is more thought-provoking and playful than Condo painting a skeleton on Ginsberg -- footage that McNaughton then reversed from positive to negative and ran backward to make it look as if the poet's skeleton is being "unpainted."
Music and songs by Danny Elfman, Philip Glass, Beck, Tom Waits and others, including a cool revival of King Crimson, keep the mood shifting and eclectic, befitting a wily thinker like Condo, who believes -- among other unorthodox notions -- that TV show characters like Gomer Pyle are just as important in the scheme of things as Albert Einstein.
