Best known for his long-running role as grumbling landlord Amos Brearly on the soap "Emmerdale" (1972-1991).
Served with the Royal Corps of Signals during WWII and started with repertory stage acting after the war.
Off-screen, he was said to be a real gentleman who always had time for his fans, even if they interrupted a dinner out.
He was born in Hull, but raised in Birmingham.
He started out on the stage, and was artistic director of the Nottingham Playhouse in the 1960s.
Spoke the first words on the stage of Nottingham's Playhouse Theatre.
