On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: When the Going Gets Tough, Santa’s Reindeer Get the Hell Out of Florida
Despite the fact that Santa, ice cream, and bunnies are three topics famously enjoyed by young children, letting your kids anywhere near “Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny” feels like a surefire way to make them swear off Christmas altogether and embark on a path towards atheism.
I’ve seen enough excruciatingly bad Christmas specials in my day to accept that our collective standards for holiday content are significantly lower than they are for anything that...

“I came to Lauren with the title and concept, and we wrote the song fairly quickly,” says Mikel, who released his debut single “Come With Me” in 2017. “It’s kind of a ‘good girl gone bad’ story about someone that’s not the best for you. Killer sharks and human jellyfish and living mummies, oh my! Mean-spirited ‘Bad Movie’ satirists forget that production values aren’t everything, even if the collected works of Barry Mahon and Coleman Francis say otherwise. This threadbare backyard production has ‘endearing’ written all over it. I judge many independent movies to be like picture puzzles with pieces missing, and this one is missing a Lot of them. But back when the drive-in was king, there was hope for just about any picture with a determined producer. The Last Time We Saw Arch Hall (we never saw him a first time), he may have been cooking up a sequel to this maladroit teenage caveman epic … if only he hadn’t killed off his main character. But this Turkey actually performed in release: Eegah would rate its niche in film history even if Richard Kiel hadn’t become a star in James Bond movies. Don’t miss the Trade Paper clipping feature at the bottom of the review.

The Friends reunion is here! Just kidding, it is 100 percent not a Friends reunion, so please stop calling it that. We already know that Benedict Cumberbatch is devastatingly fluent in pillow talk, having recently ignited the Internet with the sexiest violin metaphor ever. Amelia Lily was voted back onto 'X Factor' last night (12.11.11). The pink-haired hopeful beat off competition from previous axed contestants 2 Shoes, James Michael and Jonjo Kerr in a pubic vote to re-enter the ITV1 show as a replacement for Frankie Cocozza, who was chucked off the programme for boasting about taking cocaine. Amelia received 48 per cent of the vote and sang live on last night's show - which experienced technical difficulties, forcing ITV to air 16 minutes of highlights while the problems were addressed - with a rendition of Queen's aptly-named song 'The Show Must Go On'. X Factor's Kitty Brucknell, Janet Devlin and Marcus Collins have told Digital Spy which of their former rivals they want voted back into the competition tonight. Following Frankie Cocozza's shock exit earlier this week, it was announced that either Amelia Lily, Jonjo Kerr, James Michael or 2 Shoes would win the vacant place in the live shows. Speaking after rehearsals for tonight's live show, Brucknell admitted that she would have "loved" fellow Overs finalist Johnny Robinson to return after his exit last week. "I like 2 Shoes. I want 2 Shoes back," she said. "I know it sounds weird, I should probably be backing Jonjo, but let's face it, he wasn't very nice to me. For the fun, I want 2 Shoes back!" Looking to follow through, James Michael Shoberg and his Pennsylvania-set Rage of the Stage Players are celebrating Halloween this year with an adaptation of The Butcher Brothers' contemporary cult vampire film, The Hamiltons, and the writer/director spoke to Fango about the transition that goes up this Thursday October 21 at the South Park Theatre (Corrigan Dr. South Park, Pa 15129).

Inglewood, California — You would never consider rapper the Game "soft," especially on his home turf of Los Angeles. But the Mc showed us his vulnerable side by proposing to longtime girlfriend Tiffany Cambridge on Wednesday afternoon (October 12).
Game staged the big surprise at Frank D. Parent Elementary School, where Cambridge works as a teacher. The school's principal even got in on the plan, calling Cambridge to an afterschool "meeting" where Game was waiting anxiously with the couple's two children.
Cambridge arrived with a big look of suspicion on her face to a room full of people. As family, faculty, media and the couple's bishop looked on, Game got down on one knee and said, "I...

James Michael has told Digital Spy that Gary Barlow made an error with his X Factor song choice. Michael performed an acoustic cover of the Beatles hit 'Ticket To Ride' on Saturday's Live Show. His Take That star mentor said that he had "totally reinvented a classic" after his performance, but decided to let him go in Sunday's quadruple elimination. The 20-year-old singer claimed that he had always had doubts about the song selection. "I said that I didn't think the song would work, but Gary claimed that he was over the moon with it and I just went with it," Michael revealed. > 'X Factor' James Michael, 2 Shoes interview "I think the only problem I had and the only mistake was that one little song choice. If we hadn't picked that song, I think I'd still be there. (more)...

Amelia Lily thinks Janet Devlin was saved from the 'X Factor' chop because she was Kelly Rowland's "favourite". The 16-year-old singer - who was axed from the ITV1 talent show alongside James Michael, Jonjo Kerr and duo 2 Shoes last night (09.10.11) - thinks her mentor chose not to get rid of the Irish hopeful in the shock twist because she has been a fan of Janet's since her very first audition. Having now become completely addicted to watching this show every flaming year, despite my better judgement I might add given the distinct lack of market impact any of the winners ever have after the dust has settled and Simon Cowell has dragged his massive bulging bag of money to the bank, I’m beginning to get frustrated with the set-up. It’s all very predictable. Even when the show introduces these cut-throat “twists” like this week’s revelatory Judge Vote Off Bonanaza, or whatever they want to call it.
Aside from the fact that the decision robs the paying, voting public the opportunity to support acts that they have seen develop into justified Finalists (on the Judges’ terms anyway – I’m still massively irked that Terry, and even more profoundly Jade were turned away) – the whole thing feels like forced drama for the sake of it. It should be a talent show,...

Not that you were expecting anything less, but: Sam Raimi is now 100 percent confirmed as the director for the new The Wizard of Oz movie titled, Oz: The Great and Powerful with Robert Downey Jr. still the odds-on favorite to portray the title character of Oz. It will be hard to vie for the love of those who hold the original 1939 film in high regard, though Raimi should have little problem besting the reaction to 1985's Return to Oz or 1969's The Wonderful Land of Oz -- a film directed by Barry Mahon whose last film before Oz was titled Fanny Hill meets Dr. Erotico. If you're in Los Angeles, swing by Nikki Sixx's house to wish him a happy birthday, as the Mötley Crüe bassist turns 51 years old today. Of all the self-destructive rock stars who emerged from the '80s hair metal scene (and there were no shortage of casualties), Sixx's survival is nothing short of miraculous. While most of his bandmates in the Crüe were content to drink too much Jack Daniel's and crash expensive cars, Sixx spent most of his quality time experimenting with heroin. According to his excellent book The Heroin Diaries, Sixx believes he overdosed at least six times in his life, with one of those incidences coming on December 23, 1987, when he was legally dead for two minutes before paramedics revived him with a pair of adrenaline shots directly to his heart (this incident is memorialized in the Crüe hit "Kickstart My Heart").
But Sixx is sober now,...
