KollywoodCrazy Mohan's wordplay was unique in the Tamil comedy world.Megha KaveriVinodh VelayudhanThe world lost quite a bit of its craziness on Monday as renowned playwright and inimitable comedy writer ‘Crazy’ Mohan passed away in Chennai due to a heart attack. He was 66. Earning his prefix ‘Crazy’ from one of the earliest plays he wrote, Mohan was known for setting a trend in Tamil comedy, which was clean and enjoyable for people of all ages. A distinct feature of his scripts was how he intertwined comedy with the story, thus ensuring that the narrative moved ahead quickly and the comedy track didn't poke out separately from the story. Some of the trademark features which made his scripts stand out and easily identifiable to the audience are the frequent usage of mistaken identities, wordplay and one-liners. KollywoodMany a time, forgettable films still remain in people's memory solely for Vadivelu's evergreen comedy.Megha KaveriPadithurai Pandi, Kirikaalan, Naai Sekar, Snake Babu. BlogA journalist recalls her meetings with J Mahendran, a filmmaker who has given us some of Tamil cinema's best characters.Kavitha MuralidharanI first met J Mahendran in 2013 for an interview. Sometime last year, I met him again at an awards event, without realising it would be my last meeting with him. In between, whenever we met, Mahendran exuded the same warmth that he did when we met for the first time. The 2013 meeting was not easy. Mahendran was contemplating the idea of directing a movie after a long hiatus but was still keeping aloof. I convinced him through a friend – Manivannan – who had produced a programme on the director for Kalaignar TV – to give me an interview. But once the ice was broken, Mahendran was in full flow, without any inhibitions – just as he was in his films. The director was in his trademark white shirt and pants when we went to his Pallikaranai house.

We analyse why.Sowmya RajendranOn April 9 this year, Rajinikanth's iconic film Padayappa directed by Ks Ravikumar will turn 20. The film, Ks Ravikumar's second with the superstar after the success of Muthu in 1995, received a much coveted box-office date – a day before the Tamil New Year – and went on to become the highest grossing Tamil film at that point. Two decades later, it remains one of Rajinikanth's most popular films and has high recall value among Tamil audiences. It also gave us a woman villain who is till date unsurpassed, Ramya Krishnan's Neelambari. What is it about Padayappa that people still love? Why do we keep going back to the film, even though by today's standards it is high on melodrama and has plenty of regressive ideas? Family,...
