When hearing the logline for Hulu’s new movie “Quiz Lady” — a wild sister prods her shy sibling into appearing on a quiz show to pay off debts — one could be forgiven for assuming that Sandra Oh plays the more together Jenny and Awkwafina the one getting into shenanigans. But one of the delights of the Jessica Yu-helmed comedy is watching these two actresses play atypical roles. It’s Oh who roars into town and Awkwafina who has to be forced off her couch and away from her stockpile of popcorn. And the fun they’re having is contagious.
“Sandra’s character is entirely inappropriate and self-serving and kind of stuck in the past,” Yu told IndieWire. “But she’s not fully accepting that. [Sandra and I] talked about what was the period in Jenny’s growing up that she can’t let go of, and we decided it was kind of like,...

Though Doug Liman has built much of his blockbuster filmography on memorable action set-pieces, from The Bourne Identity all the way through Edge of Tomorrow, his earlier work (Swingers, Go) speaks to a more efficient, character-driven filmmaker. His new picture The Wall feels like a little bit of both. We got a chance to chat with the director about the film, the intricate design of the titular wall and how he deals with his short attention span while making movies.
You’ve worked on a decent amount of action thrillers. What jumped out to you when you read this script?
The reason why I’m drawn to making action movies is because I love pinning characters down in impossible situations and then seeing how they survive. And, you know, I’ve created some pretty outrageous situations; spies with amnesia or aliens and time travel in Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow.

Designing the "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" was a new experience for Jeff Mann, known for working on such "blunt instruments" as "Tropic Thunder" with Ben Stiller and "Transformers" with Michael Bay. But Stiller definitely had a different mind set for the daydreaming Everyman, full of whimsy and wistfulness, and Mann visualized that world in a graphic and poetic way that's certainly worthy of Oscar consideration. From Mitty's orderly New York apartment to the iconic Time-Life Building to the exotic landscapes of Iceland and Afghanistan, Mann had plenty of opportunity to juxtapose Mitty's inner and outer worlds. The trick was tying them together and so the production designer found ways of providing signals or clues in Mitty's daydreams or yearnings while also planting visual cues that define his linear personality. "It was quite the variety of environments where we got to build and contradict and have similarities to his fancies and reality,...

Photo: Paramount Home Entertainment It's been a long time since I have enjoyed a DVD or Blu-ray release as much as I enjoyed this one. Sure, some good movies have come my way, but for the most part the majority of special features and extra content never really does anything to get me too excited. The Tropic Thunder Director's Cut DVD and Blu-ray not only offer an extended look at the funniest film of the year, but it also comes equipped with features you are going to want to watch as opposed to features you will skim through. This isn't to say all of the features are good, but there are a couple that make the release worthwhile on their own. Throughout this review you will see screenshots taken directly from the DVD release accompanied by captions either describing what you are seeing or quoting what the actor was saying when the image was captured.
