Cinema numbers are shrinking again as Covid-19 cases rise across Europe.
France, opening Wednesday October 14
It has been a complicated few days for French distributors and exhibitors following the introduction of a night-time curfew from Saturday night in Paris and eight other major cities, as part of measures to slow the spread of Covid-19.
The measure, which obliges people to return home by 9pm, effectively wipes out key evening screening slots although exhibitors are lobbying the government for a special dispensation for cinemagoers. A final decision was expected late Friday or over the weekend, but if the answer is ‘no...

Why does the fashion workroom provide such rich fodder for cinematic storytellers? “Fashion touches everyone, but we still look at an atelier as a place that’s both glamorous and a bit mysterious. It’s really fun to pull back that curtain,” says P. David Ebersole, who, with Todd Hughes, co-directed House of Cardin. It chronicles the life of Italian designer Pierre Cardin, now 98, known for dressing everyone from The Beatles to Dionne Warwick and for his pioneering push to license his name.

Martin Margiela has built an empire out of mystery, both in terms of his work as an iconoclastic fashion designer and his reclusive identity as an artist. Instead, Margiela, whose face is not publicly known, has let his bracing collections do the talking. Since the 1980s, through his couture house Maison Margiela, he has turned out wearable avant-garde pieces made from unconventional materials with a legacy of deconstructing the basic grammar of fashion to make outspoken art. Reiner Holzemer’s new documentary, “Martin Margiela: In His Own Words,” doesn’t reveal Margiela’s identity, nor does it break the mold for nonfiction filmmaking. While Margiela’s visions likely deserve a more radical treatment onscreen,
Margiela technically left the fashion house he founded in 2009, but his vision has been carried on by his successors in occasional runway appearances and around the world in the brick-and-mortars housing the ready-to-wear Margiela line. The documentary shows how Margiela,...

An industry as overtly image-based as fashion design is always going to produce instantly recognizable stars. But as proven by Reiner Holzemer’s intelligent, enjoyable if uncritical “Martin Margiela: In His Own Words,” in those cases, the figure of the designer can eclipse the design. Think of Vivienne Westwood, and we think of her Elizabeth-i-safety-pinned-to-Sid-Vicious vibe; of Tom Ford and it’s how his immaculate stubble often outguns his doubtless terrifyingly suave suit. But Martin Margiela, whose legacy, the film will convince you, is next to unparalleled, has never publicly shown his face. It gives Holzemer’s talking-head-based approach its most inspired creative limitation.
After an apprenticeship with Jean Paul Gaultier in the late ’80s, the Belgian-born Margiela co-founded his atelier, Maison Martin Margiela, in 1988 with business partner Jenny Meirens. Very quickly, their controversial shows, staged in parking lots, under bridges and in Salvation Army stores, showcasing Margiela’s brilliantly eccentric design ethos,...

You may have heard his name uttered by Kanye West or Migos in songs but Martin Margiela isn’t necessarily a household name when it comes to fashion — but it should be. One of the most elusive designers in the fashion industry, there are barely any photos of him on the internet, but his work speaks for itself. In the Oscilloscope documentary, Martin Margiela: In His Own Words, filmmaker Reiner Holzemer takes us behind the scenes of the career of the titular avant-garde.
With the docu, Margiela breaks his no-interview policy and aversion to being in the public eye as Holzemer puts the spotlight on the “Banksy of fashion”. He worked as Jean Paul Gaultier’s assistant and was the creative director at Hermès before he started his own fashion house. For the first time, Margiela reveals his drawings, notes, and personal items in this intimate profile of his vision...

"Anonymity is very important to me." Oscilloscope has debuted an official trailer for a fashion documentary titled Martin Margiela: In His Own Words, which first premiered at the Doc NYC Film Festival last year. It seems one of the big doc trends right now is films about fashion designers and the crazy lives they lead - there are so many of them recently. After more than a decade since leaving Maison Martin Margiela, Martin Margiela takes a look back at his 20 years of work as fashion designer. Martin Margiela has never shown his face to the public, preferring the clothes to speak for themselves. Likewise, in this fashion doc the designer picks pivotal pieces from his collections. The film features interviews with, among others, Margiela himself, Jean Paul Gaultier, Carine Roitfeld, trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort, fashion critic Cathy Horyn, and fashion historian Olivier Saillard. The score was composed by Belgian rock band dEUS.

Unless you’re someone with a knowledge of the fashion industry, you probably don’t have much of an idea who Martin Margiela is. Actually, even if you’re someone who has a deep understanding and love of fashion, you may know the name, but you still have no idea who Martin Margiela is. You see, the fashion designer that is considered one of the best has shrouded himself in mystery. Until now, at least.

This documentary about the enigmatic Belgian designer, who became disenchanted with the sexification of fashion, is uncritical but refreshingly serious
Martin Margiela is the Belgian-born avant-garde fashion designer sometimes described as the couture Banksy, because he has never publicly shown his face for the photographers. But maybe it is truer to say that he is the Terrence Malick of fashion, because there are, in fact, one or two photographs of him (though unverified). This documentary loyally declines to show them, or even ask the always off-camera Margiela if they are genuine.
After what appears to have been a happy childhood, which Margiela recalls with a Proustian emphasis on the importance of his grandmother, he went into fashion and gained a devoted following for his theatrical happenings-slash-shows in Paris. These presented challenging creations, often repurposing and recreating existing garments, almost like the art world’s objets trouvés.

Lady Gaga’s little monsters now have a pretty sizable trump card to pull. Because being a fan of the singer means also being an advocate of all her Gagaisms, right? While they’re of the “whatever Gaga touches becomes art” side of the debate, the opposition hollers “Nay”! Because there’s a whole section of the planet that doesn’t care much for Gaga’s *ahem*…style? Unfortunately for them, they’re going to find something else to diss because Gaga is now becoming art for real. Normal celebrities get one statute at Madame Tussauds, and are happy, right? Read this and weep, normal-everyday-star: Gaga’s getting eight wax figures at Madame Tussauds across the globe. So as Bart Simpson would say …eat my shorts. The pieces are going to be unveiled on December 9, and each of the museums will have a Gaga of their very own to show off.

For Fall/Winter 2011, the AIDS Charity T-shirt is available for purchase. In classic Margiela style, the tee is stark and simple, but full of meaning. Literally. Rick Ross may have $300,000 less in his bank account soon, but he was all smiles when he called MTV News late Thursday in New York.
"I'm sitting in Barneys on 51st and Madison," Ross said. "Had to pick me up a pair of Mason Martin Margiela [sneakers] and two pairs of Louboutins for this Diddy video we shooting this weekend."
On Thursday at the U.S. District Federal Court in New York, a jury of eight awarded DJ Vlad (real name: Vlad Lyubovni) $250,000 in punitive damages and $50,000 in compensatory damages against Ross. The four-day court proceedings stem from an August 10, 2008, incident involving Vlad and Ross' Triple C's group. Vlad alleged that Ross orchestrated an attack on him by the collective at an event at the 2008 Ozone Awards for posting images...

A year ago I told myself that social design would thrive in reverse proportion to the stock market. As soon as the Dow hit 10,000, I suspected, designers would abandon their humanitarian projects and resume work on $6,000 pendants. So much for the wisdom of a cynic. The Dow now gyrates above 10,600 and social design is thriving. Where's the evidence? In May the Cooper-Hewitt will show more than 100 do-gooder designs in its National Design Triennial. Glitzy packaging and top-shelf sponsors aside, Design Miami remains a cherry on the international design circuit: A nice topper to the year, but no substantial meal. But that should be of no surprise, as since its founding five years ago by property developer Craig Robins, the fair has been about cultivating moneyed collectors, not breaking new work. These commercial underpinnings were apparent Dec. 1 to 5 at the fair's latest installment. As with parallel event Art Basel Miami Beach, the preference was for the tried and tested. Big-name pieces commissioned by Design Miami partners Audi, Hsbc, Fendi, and Swarovski dominated the show, upstaging--and perhaps even atoning for--the sparse number of exhibitors and satellite events. But there were bright moments amid the fray, the best of which are detailed below.
