There a few performers’ names who, when you hear them, sound synonymous with holiday-themed television. This year, Emeraude Toubia should one of them.
The former “Shadowhunters” star traded stunts and sci fi for cozy sweaters and the new relationship ups and downs of both Lifetime’s “Holiday in Santa Fe” and Amazon Prime Video’s “With Love.”
Working on two holiday-themed projects back-to-back may not have been an entirely intentional career move, but when Toubia learned the details of both — from her character to the teams behind the scenes — she knew she had to go for them. “Holiday in Santa Fe,” which airs Dec.10 on Lifetime, was written by comedian Cristela Alonzo, directed by Jody Margolin Hahn and produced by Mario Lopez, who also stars as Toubia’s on-screen love interest. She co-executive produces that movie and also plays a greeting card executive named Belinda who travels to the titular...

After the television industry shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, multicam productions had an extra barrier when considering an eventual return: what to do about the live studio audience.
Traditionally, each episode would have a table read, followed by rehearsals and a day of pre-taped material before filming the bulk of the installment in front of a couple hundred people. But with no crowds allowed on set, how each show could approach filming changed.
“It was very much a logistical challenge, where I had to be working on [following the safety protocols] and at the same time make sure that the creative was getting serviced, as we are used to doing,” says James Widdoes, “Mom” director. “We didn’t want to present a worse version of the show because of Covid.”
An early speedbump? The discovery of how PPE, a necessity, impacted rehearsals. In addition to table reads being bumped to Zoom (where...

Still reeling from the death of a member of the show’s audio crew yesterday, the ABC comedy series today filmed its Season 3 finale “in loving memory of a lovely man,” according to co-star Michael Fishman, who plays D.J. Conner on the show. He shared a tribute to their late colleague originally posted by director Jody Margolin Hahn.
“Yesterday, we lost a dear member of our audio crew, Terrel Richmond. Today, we shoot our final episode of @theconnersabc Season 3 in loving memory of a lovely man.” The post was accompanied by a shot of the clapboard from the Season 3 finale, with “In memory of Terrell” at the top.
Fishman later added his own statement, writing, “We shared a stage, large portions of our lives, and we will forever be connected.”
The Conners‘ production company, Tom Werner’s Werner Entertainment, earlier today confirmed the crew member’s death this morning in a statement to Deadline.

Tonight, “The Conners” joins the pantheon of live sitcom episodes with “Live From Lanford.” That’s right — the original iteration of “Roseanne” never got the chance to partake in this more contemporary sitcom rite of passage, and neither did the revival (for different reasons), but now, their successor will.
And tonight’s episode of “The Conners” isn’t just live: It’s specifically tied to the 2020 Presidential race, because why not?
The Episode
“Live From Lanford” is the 12th episode of “The Conners” Season 2. The series stars John Goodman as Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf as Jackie Harris, Sara Gilbert as Darlene Conner, Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner-Healy, Michael Fishman as D.J. Conner, Emma Kenney as Harris Conner-Healy, Ames McNamara as Mark Conner-Healy, and Jayden Rey as Mary Conner.
Here is the official live episode synopsis, from ABC:
“Mark is watching the results of the primary for a school report with Harris,...

When director Jody Margolin Hahn first heard the idea for “The Conners’s” special live episode, in which characters would be watching and reacting to the results of the New Hampshire primary arrive in real-time on TV, her first thought immediately went to that pivotal prop.
“The TV is downstage. It normally lives on the fourth wall,” she tells Variety. So, she told the writers that she could “put a TV on a wall somewhere else and have a camera on there and cut to it, but you’re never going to see the TV in the same shot as the actors.”
That would mean confining what was supposed to be an interactive part of the story. Having the characters watch the results on a computer, tablet or phone was not going to work, either — mostly because of how much smaller those screen sizes are, which would force Hahn to cut to them in closeup,...
