Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) announced that staff for the chamber’s Sergeant-at-Arms will officially stop enforcing a dress code on the Senate floor.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) can be credited with inspiring the change, as he has been wearing hoodies and gym shorts after returning from medical leave in April and voting from doorways to avoid being penalized for his casual attire.
“There has been an informal dress code that was enforced,” said Schumer in a statement. “Senators are able to choose what they wear on the Senate floor. I will continue to wear a suit.”
It is unclear if the previous dress code was actually written down anywhere, but Schumer stated that staff will no longer fine senators for their clothing choices.
Some conservative members of the chamber disagreed with Schumer’s announcement.

Ever the optimist, Jimmy Fallon tried to make Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell feel better after a recent Morning Consult poll revealed he is the least popular senator in the country, carrying an approval rating of just 28%.
In the Friday night bit, the “Tonight Show” host on NBC pulled together several fake quotes from other U.S. senators offering “words of encouragement” for McConnell — but really they just served to insult a handful of senators instead of just one.
Fallon’s writing team had each senator let McConnell know it could always be worse, revealing their own issues with feedback from their constituents. Be sure to check out the video above, as many of the hilarious digs are based on the politicians’ looks.

Updated, 11:58 Am: Eric Garcetti was confirmed by the Senate as the next U.S. ambassador to India, nearly two years after he was first nominated.
His efforts to win confirmation were stalled last year, amid allegations that he knew of sexual harassment complaints against a top aide but did not take action. Garcetti denied those allegations, but it created divisions within the Democratic caucus.
The Senate voted 52-42 for confirmation, with seven Republicans in support and three Democrats against.
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-oh), Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-hi) and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-az) voted against the nomination. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-sc), Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-tn), Sen. Susan Collins (R-me), Sen. A group of Republican senators is calling for a TV ratings system to warn parents about LGBTQ content in children’s programs. Their statement singles out Disney repeatedly.
GOP Senators Roger Marshall (Kan.), Mike Lee (Utah), Mike Braun (Ind.), Steve Daines (Mont.) and Kevin Cramer (N.D.) sent a letter to Charles Rivkin, Chairman of the TV Guidelines Ratings Board — the entity that manages and monitors the designations on programs such as TV-y, TV-14, TV-ma, etc.
The missive begins, “In recent years, concerning topics of a sexual nature have become aggressively politicized and promoted in children’s programming, including irreversible and harmful experimental treatments for mental disorders like gender dysphoria.”
It continues, “Considering that the cognitive markers of sexual desire emerge during puberty when adolescents undergo natural hormonal and physiological changes, it is wholly inappropriate to display this content in a TV-Y7 category and for other young audiences.”

Washington, May 24 (Ians) US' top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci has said he is "not convinced" Covid-19 developed naturally, and has called for an open investigation into China to unravel the virus' origins, the media reported.
Fauci was asked during a Poynter event, "United Facts of America: A Festival of Fact-Checking", earlier this month, about whether he was confident that Covid developed naturally.
"No actually. I am not convinced about that, I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened," Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (Niaid) was quoted as saying, Fox News reported on Sunday.
"Certainly, the people who investigated it say it likely was the emergence from an animal reservoir that then infected individuals, but it could have been something else, and we need to find that out.

Bill Maher dove headfirst into ripping Trump supporters who are evangelical Christians on the latest episode of HBO’s “Real Time.”
During his weekly “New Rules” segment, Maher eviscerated Christians and the Book of Revelations, which he argued was just as unhinged as the conspiracy theories spread by QAnon. Maher also said Trump-supporting conservatives who are still convinced the 2020 election was rigged in favor of President Biden are part of a “mass delusion.”
“There’s a lot of talk now about how Republicans should tell their base who still believe the election was rigged that they need to grow up and move on and stop asking the rest of us to respect their mass delusion,” Maher said Friday. “Of course it is a mass delusion. Updated with ViacomCBS statement: Nearly two weeks after the Capitol siege prompted a host of companies to suspend political contributions to those opposing the certifying of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, ViacomCBS has joined the list.
“ViacomCBS supports peaceful civic engagement and the orderly transition of power in the democratic process,” the company said in a statement. “We therefore condemn the recent attack on the U.S. Capitol, and have paused contributions from our political action committee to members of Congress who voted against certification of the 2020 U.S. Electoral College results.”
Previously, January 11 Pm: AT&T, the parent company of WarnerMedia, and Comcast, parent company of NBCUniversal, are the latest corporations to halt political contributions to lawmakers who objected to the certification of the electoral vote last week in favor of Joe Biden, an event that was at the center of the siege of the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump.

The Walt Disney Co. and the Motion Picture Association are joining Comcast and AT&T in halting political contributions to House and Senate lawmakers who voted to reject the certification of electoral votes for Joe Biden.
A Disney spokesperson said, “The insurrection at our nation’s Capitol was a direct assault on one of our country’s most revered tenets: the peaceful transition of power. In the immediate aftermath of that appalling siege, Members of Congress had an opportunity to unite—an opportunity that some sadly refused to embrace. In light of these events, we have decided we will not make political contributions in 2021 to lawmakers who voted to reject the certification of the Electoral College votes.”
Patrick Kilcur, executive vice president for U.S. government affairs for the MPA, said in a statement, “The Motion Picture Association is shocked and saddened by the horrific events at the U.S. Capitol last week.

As 2020 election results roll in, control of the Senate remains in the balance — and everything may all come down to Georgia.
The math is not complicated. In the current Senate, Republicans hold a three-seat advantage, 53-47. If Biden wins the presidency, as appears increasingly likely, Vice President Kamala Harris would sit as the Senate’s tie-breaker, and Democrats would need a net gain of three seats to control the chamber. Stylish crime fighting, despicable evil masterminds, a bowler-hatted old Etonian gentleman spy and a series of beautiful leather cat-suited, kinky-booted, no-nonsense heroines. The Avengers had all this and more. What began as a monochrome tape series in January 1961 ran the whole of the Sixties, becoming a colourful slice of period hokum, full of flair, wit and sophistication, yet with its tongue firmly in its cheek.
Always the perfect gentleman, John Steed was played by Patrick Macnee. Originally billed second to the late Ian Hendry, Macnee was still playing Steed over 15 years later when he was teamed with the youthful duo of Joanna Lumley and Gareth Hunt for The New Avengers in 1976. In the 1998 film, the role of Steed was given to Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman played Emma Peel. I will say no more about the film.

In this week of Doctor Who celebration, Andrew salutes just a few of the individuals whose talent and hard work made the show what it is...
In the history of Doctor Who there are many names in the end credits that always seem to stand out. For some reason, I always look out for Alec Wheal in Eighties Who credits or, since 2005, the Script Editor. Over the years there have been hundreds of unsung contributors behind the scenes, and this article seeks to celebrate a handful of those who put in one helluva slog for our benefit.
Oh, and in researching this article I discovered that Dorka Nieradzik – who worked on Logopolis, Revelation of the Daleks and Silver Nemesis to name but a few – now appears to be Clive Owen's personal Hair and Make Up Artist.
It's not really relevant or anything, but...
