It's well known that Austin's Fantastic Fest is as much a nerd party as it is a film festival. And that's why America's best genre fest was the perfect place for the U.S. premiere of American Mary, Jen and Sylvia Soska's extraordinary new film starring Katharine Isabelle.
The Twisted Twins and Mary costar Tristan Risk flew into town and stayed the duration of the festival, during which this trio was seemingly everywhere at once — attending multiple screenings, singing karaoke at the bar next door, posing for photos while surrounded by swarms of fawning fanboys — and, without fail, each time I saw them they were clad in a different attention-getting ensemble, kind of like the Cher of scare.
While these ladies definitely know how to work a room, their recent success hasn't jaded them. They are still horror geeks at heart. As I was rushing to a screening one afternoon,...

How was your weekend? Well, no matter how good yours was, it's safe to say a better one was had by American Mary, the stunning new film from Canadian horrormeisters Jen and Sylvia Soska.
Hot off a triumphant U.S. premiere at Austin's Fantastic Fest, the Twisted Twins' twisted revenge thriller took the advice of Horace Greeley and headed west in search of success and found it in the sunny, smoggy climes of Hollywood.
American Mary began its wonderful weekend by being picked up by Anchor Bay for Canadian distribution after it played at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, which follows a European distribution deal signed in August with Universal Pictures International. Can an American American Mary deal be far behind?
The Soskas' fortunes continued to rise at L.A.'s prestigious Screamfest Horror Film Festival, where American Mary dominated, picking up statues for Best Picture, Best Director(s), Best Cinematography,...

Jen and Sylvia Soska (aka the Twisted Twins) broke out onto the scene a few years back with their Grindhouse/Exploitation homage, Dead Hooker In A Trunk. With that film, the Canadian duo proved that they could make an entertaining movie on a small budget, and that violence, gore, and sick humor are not only something that the boys can play with. That being said, the Soskas’ follow up feature, American Mary, manages to reinforce that notion, while also showing that the pair are more than just one trick ponies.
American Mary tells the story of Mary Mason (played by Katharine Isabelle), a medical student who is aspiring to someday become a surgeon. Her professors say that she has the talent, but that she also lacks focus in her studies; probably due to her financial troubles. In order to try and get herself out of debt, Mary begins searching the classifieds,...

Do you know the feeling when you wash your hands with a bar of soap? How it makes your hands tensile, coarse, and uncomfortably dry? How it makes you squirm, uneasy, and perpetually unsettled? Like they were being constrained and sucked through your palms? Well, imagine if that feeling resonated throughout your entire body, multiply that by the biggest number you can think of, and you’ve only begun to understand what it’s like to watch Jen and Sylvia Soska’s surgical body horror movie American Mary. The British have a propensity to call the operating room the ‘operating theatre’, and after watching American Mary, you’ll get a keen sense of why.

Katharine Isabelle reappears after a long absence from horror films as the stoic, cold, and incredibly charismatic Mary Mason in American Mary, the new feature film from twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska (self-dubbed as "The Twisted Twins"). The higher production value and professional performances put it far above their previous sophomoric, but highly entertaining, effort Dead Hooker in a Trunk, but American Mary remains, like its predecessor, a pure exploitation film with little substance and a lot of fun. American Mary
Directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska
Written by Jen and Sylvia Soska
2012, Canada
Steeped in pulp and hardcore imagery, horror allusions, and fetishistic gore, American Mary is a film that has emphatic reverence for its form. And as a collection of horror set pieces and bizarre characters, it is a success. Unfortunately, it’s not so successful as a cohesive and meaningful film.
Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle) is a young med student enrolled in a surgery residency. She’s fantastic at what she does, but in great financial and academic distress. When putting in a resume at the local strip-joint, she’s recruited to stitch up a gunshot victim in the backroom. She’s rewarded handsomely, and almost immediately contacted for some unusual surgical services. And thus she enters the seedy world of body modification. Katharine Isabelle is best-known in the horror community as the titular character of Ginger Snaps.

There’s something to be said for an incredibly fun movie with some not-so-small problems. The degree of that something most likely differs depending on the viewer, but enough good in a film can often overcome any amount of bad. Theoretically. Luckily for American Mary, that theory holds true as script and editing issues are partially overcome with wit, personality and gleeful audacity. It also helps that the film features two strongly addictive female performances, one lead and one supporting, that anchor the viewers’ attention and sympathies. Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle) is a medical student heading towards a career as a surgeon, but her biggest challenge can’t be found in the classroom. It’s in her bank account… her empty bank account. Hoping to earn some quick cash she answers an ad for a strip club, but before she can even audition she’s cajoled into applying her med skills on a man in need of...

I’ve had this conversation on multiple occasions. When it comes to body modification of any kind — tattoos, piercings, etc. — I’m all for it. Go ahead. Cool. Express yourself. Experiment. As long as you’re a consenting adult, it’s your body and your choice. I actually think a lot of it is fascinating, even artistically accomplished. However, this comes with a flip side… I have zero body modifications. No reason. Just a personal choice. Why do I bring this up? Because when it comes to viewing a film like American Mary, I can be as supportive and open-minded as I would like, but I’ll always remain someone viewing the culture from the outside. If you’re wondering why that matters, well… it matters a lot if you’re about to watch the sophomore outing from Canadian filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska, whose debut feature Dead Hooker In A Trunk...

I've been covering horror movies for a while now, and over the years I've noticed a lot of very interesting genre films about women -- that are also written and directed by men. That's meant as a compliment. Indie filmmakers like Paul Solet (Grace), Mitchell Lichtenstein (Teeth), and Lucky McKee (May, The Woman) are clearly and admirably fascinated by females who exist in an environment of dark fiction, but let's be frank here: there should be more horror films about women -- that are also written and directed by women. The dark and disturbing, yet oddly accessible American Mary looks like a firm step in the right direction. Written and directed by a pair of twin sisters from Vancouver, American Mary is easily one of the most fascinating female-themed horror stories of the past few years, and it should absolutely serve to open a few more doors for the audacious...

When directing team Jen and Sylvia Soska first emerged from the Canadian tundra (well, metropolitan Vancouver, anyway) bearing a bunch of talent and a bedraggled little low-budget feature called Dead Hooker in a Trunk, they were an unknown entity. My, how times have changed.
Thanks to a relentless touring schedule, a gift for self-promotion and that above-mentioned bunch of talent, the Soskas quickly became indie icons. Their Dead Hooker played fast and loose and rightfully became a grindhouse sensation.
But that was way back in 2010. What have they done for us lately? Many is the filmmaker that crashed and burned following a fast rise. Oh god, what if it was all a fluke?
Well, the Soskas are back with their sophomore feature, American Mary, which had its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest last night.

A medical student finds tragedy, revenge, rebirth and success in the world of body modification surgery in Jen and Sylvia Soska's bold and confident sophomore feature film effort American Mary.
The bloody new thriller from the sisters who gave us Dead Hooker in a Trunk made its American premiere at Fantastic Fest last night and proved the duo have a promising future in the genre. The film has its flaws to be sure, however, the good in American Mary far outweighs the bad.
Kathryn Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) makes a terrific return to the genre in a role she can really sink her teeth into as Mary Mason, a young woman trying to make ends meets while she aspires to be a surgeon. Wow! I literally just jumped up for joy hearing this final wave. I think that this might be my favorite selection of films since I have been attending. Films like American Mary, Antiviral, Berberian Sound Studio, the remake of Who Can Kill A Child? – Come Out and Play and the World Premiere of the sequel to The Collector! These films plus a few others just caps off what I’m sure will be my favorite Fantastic Fest yet!
Also, for those keeping score, Michael picked 7 movies that are definitely showing while I picked 6. However, this could change once the secret screenings show. Again, Fantastic Fest starts next Thursday and we plan to have reviews, interviews and possibly video & audio blogs. Anyway, here’s the announcement:

Fantastic Fest 2012 will open with Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and close with the new Red Dawn, but as the first two line-up announcements have shown, it’s the genre meat in the middle that will satisfy the most. The slate this year is pure insanity (which will be topped off by piping hot deer blood shots at the closing night North Korean invasion party), and this last puzzle piece raises excitement so high, that I’ll have to add an extra hour of crying to my schedule while not attending. Our Fsr team will be crushing every single screening though, and amidst some buzz-worthy original horror, they’ll also get new New Cronenberg in the form of Antiviral, new work from Ernesto Diaz Espinosa, and a metric ton of premieres. Either revel in ecstasy if you’re attending or rend your garments in despair if you’re not. Here’s the last list of featured films and...

American Mary
Stars: Katherine Isabelle, Julia Maxwell, Antonio Cupo, Paula Lindberg, Twan Holliday | Written and Directed by Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska
The Soska sisters, Jen and Sylvia (or the Twisted Twins as they liked to be called) made a splash in the horror genre with their 2009 debut feature Dead Hooker in a Trunk, a film which gained them an army of fans – including Eli Roth – eager for their next feature. Well they didn’t have to wait too long as the duo are back with American Mary, their hotly-anticipated follow-up fear flick starring Canadian horror icon Katherine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps), which tells the story of wannabe surgeon Mary Mason.
American Mary is an intensely interesting film, part Frankenstein tale, part rock ‘n’ roll horror flick and at the same time a wonderful feminist statement on the horror genre, the movie plays to many people on many levels. The film follows med student Mary who,...

After giving the world Dead Hooker in a Trunk, the Soska sisters, Jen & Sylvia, are back with American Mary, starring Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps).
This metaphor for the Soskas own journey through the independent film industry follows medical student Mary Mason as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the twilight world of body modification and underground surgeries where obsessed flesh artists will pay anything and go through any pain to get their unusual procedures done. But Mary soon finds that her new ‘profession’ leaves more marks on her own psyche than on her freakish clientele.
Also starring Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren, Paula Lindberg, Clay St. Thomas, John Emmet Tracy and Twan Holliday, American Mary is set to preview at Frightfest the 13th on Monday August 27th. Check out the trailer below:...

I haven’t reviewed directors Jen and Sylvia Soska’s enjoyable exploitation flick “Dead Hooker in a TrunK” on Beyond Hollywood, and I really need to fix that. I’m a huge fan of the flick, as it appeals directly to the dirty little 42nd Street weirdo which dwells deep inside my inky black soul. The sisters’ latest offering “American Mary” looks considerably darker than their first effort, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less intriguing. Another teaser for the flick popped up at this year’s Comic Con, an event which has eluded my grasp once again. Thankfully, the clip is now available online, which means you can find it nestled below this collection of words. As always. This synopsis should help set the stage: After giving the world Dead Hooker in a Trunk, the irrepressible Soska sisters unleash American Mary. Starring Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps), this...

We know you've all been clamoring for any information you can find on American Mary, the upcoming film from directors Jen and Sylvia Soska. We totally understand. We're clamoring also.
Well, we need to clamor no longer folks, come on in and check out the first official trailer for American Mary.
American Mary is the second film from Vancouver, BC directors Jen and Sylvia Soska. After months of speculating, head-scratching, hand-wringing and a teaser trailer that evoked more questions than it answered, the secret is finally out. Just what is the Soska sisters' new film American Mary all about?
The answer: underground, extreme body modification.
Dread Central was recently lucky enough to sit down with the Twisted Twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska, and discuss American Mary. To describe the experience, interviewing the Soskas is like trying to hug a beehive…incredibly intense energy, tireless activity and the sense that even though you're dealing with multiple entities, there's an overall feeling of single-mindedness and unity. The Soskas are an incredible breath of fresh air, and after the success of their unique first film, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, the ladies are looking to solidify their place in the horror community. Judging by early response, American Mary is just the film to do it for them.

Fact: If you haven’t seen directors Jen and Sylvia Soska’s feature-length debut “Dead Hooker in a Trunk”, then you’re probably a loser with terrible body odor. It’s nothing personal, of course, but that seems to be the case more often than not. Statistics don’t lie. However, don’t abandon hope just yet. If you’re looking to increase your Internet street cred by several impressive notches, take a look at the latest images from the Twisted Sisters’ “American Mary”, a film which stars “Ginger Snaps” alumni Katharine Isabelle. Works for me. This official synopsis will explain everything: The story follows medical student, Mary Mason, as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with the surgical world she once admired. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called ‘freakish’ clientele.

Those Soskas are cagey.
Back in July 2010, Jen and Sylvia Soska first mentioned a top secret project called American Mary while doing press for their debut feature, Dead Hooker in a Trunk.
A few months later came the American Mary teaser trailer. Then, a couple of months after that came the announcement that the wonderful Katharine Isabelle would star as their Mary.
And this is how it's been for almost two years: the Twisted Twins dangling American Mary in front of us, torturing us with little bits of info — not a lot, just enough to keep us interested. And, damn it, it's worked. Of course, they know it's worked; therefore, they are keeping it up. In other words, to quote Frank Zappa, the torture never stops. Which brings us to today.
That's right, the latest American Mary teaser just arrived. The Soska sisters are finally giving us our first peek at the lovely Ms.

After months of wondering and waiting, the Soska Sisters, the filmmakers behind last year’s Dead Hooker In A Trunk, have named the star of their next feature, American Mary. None other than Ginger Snaps’ Ginger Fitzgerald herself, Katharine Isabelle (pictured), will be playing the titular role of Mary Mason. This adds to the announcement that veteran FX artist Mark Shostrom (Evil Dead II, Nightmare On Elm Street 3, Phantasm II) will be handling the gore for this prosthetics-heavy film, set to start filming in late spring. Fango heard from Sylvia Soska, co-writer and co-director of American Mary, about these newest developments.

It's time for the big reveal, my friends. As promised, embedded below is Jen and Sylvia Soska's new PSA for the Massive Blood Drive. And embedded within this video is the actress they've chosen to star in American Mary, their sure-to-be-shocking follow-up to last year's absolutely-was-shocking Dead Hooker in a Trunk.
After a grueling search that took them from the hills of Hollywood to the canyons of Manhattan, the Twisted Twins finally found their Mary in their very own backyard. I'm excited to announce that talented Canadian actress Katharine Isabelle is the woman who will bring American Mary to life.

Bentonsport, Iowa - A guest comes down the stairs after a night's rest and approaches the owner of the historic inn. "Did you know this place is haunted?" she asks. The owner smiles, not because she thinks her guest is delusional, but because she's heard it before. And far from being afraid, the guest seems more excited. They're not scary, not malevolent, and not tortured. In fact, in life, the entities liked the place so much, they just didn't want to leave.
