Viavision’s first deluxe Film Noir boxed set gives us four titles that emphasize star power — Glenn Ford, Ray Milland, Kirk Douglas and Lee J. Cobb. The Australian release includes three Columbia titles and the home video premiere of a rare Paramount picture. Which ones are core Noir and which are merely ‘noir adjacent?’ The special extras invest in a quartet of audio commentaries from the top experts and Film Noir Foundation creators Eddie Muller and Alan K. Rode. There’s nothing that pair doesn’t know about these pictures.

Mill Creek and Kit Parker have raided the Columbia vault once again in search of Noir Gold from the ‘fifties. Their selection this time around has a couple of prime gems, several straight crime thrillers and domestic jeopardy tales, and also a couple of interesting Brit imports. They aren’t really ‘Noir’ either, but they’re still unexpected and different. The top title is Don Siegel’s incomparable The Lineup, but also on board is a snappy anti-commie epic by André De Toth. Get set for a lineup of impressive leading ladies: Diana Dors, Arlene Dahl, Anita Ekberg — and the great Colleen Dewhurst as a card-carrying Red!

“From the land beyond beyond…” — oops, wrong movie. Kerwin Mathews battles Torin Thatcher once again, with Judi Meredith in a stunning double role as both a delicate heroine and her evil counterpart in a magician’s mirror. Plus more stop-motion monsters than one can throw a ten-league boot at! Boy, we’re coining phrases left and right here.

A Mixed Bag In A Big Box
By Darren Allison
‘I was there; I was in that picture, fighting the Cyclops on the beach, running from the dragon! I was enthralled. It's one of my strongest childhood memories.’ It’s very hard to argue with director John Landis’s vivid account of his earliest memories and the fantasy films of Ray Harryhausen and producer Charles H. Schneer. They seemed to touch us all in an indelible manner and took us into a fantasy realm far beyond our imagination. Indicator has (for the first time in the UK) combined the three Sinbad adventures in one very handsomely produced package. It’s a magical box that has very little trouble in sending us on a journey, and back to a place called innocence…

Considering everything that's been happening on the planet in the last several months, you'd have thought we're already in November or December – of 2117. But no. It's only June. 2017. And in some parts of the world, that's the month of brides, fathers, graduates, gays, and climate change denial. Beginning this evening, Thursday, June 1, Turner Classic Movies will be focusing on one of these June groups: Lgbt people, specifically those in the American film industry. Following the presentation of about 10 movies featuring Frank Morgan, who would have turned 127 years old today, TCM will set its cinematic sights on the likes of William Haines, James Whale, George Cukor, Mitchell Leisen, Dorothy Arzner, Patsy Kelly, and Ramon Novarro. In addition to, whether or not intentionally, Claudette Colbert, Colin Clive, Katharine Hepburn, Douglass Montgomery (a.k.a. Kent Douglass), Marjorie Main, and Billie Burke, among others. But this is ridiculous! Why should TCM present a...

As someone who has always considered the werewolf to be his favorite movie monster, it has long been disheartening to see just how few truly good werewolf movies exist. Opinions may vary, of course, but I’d put the number somewhere between 10 and 20. While it’s not without its own charm, 1973’s The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, new to home video from Scream Factory after years of being unavailable, probably won’t be making that list.
A unique hybrid of monster movie, children’s fantasy, and 1970s domestic drama, The Boy Who Cried Werewolf finds young Richie Bridgestone watching the marriage of his parents dissolve. While on a trip to the family cabin with his dad (Kerwin Mathews), the pair is attacked by a wolf that bites his father. Before he can say, “I’m pretty sure my dad is a werewolf,” Richie’s dad becomes a werewolf and starts killing people.

Fans of Ray Harryhausen came to pay their respects to the filmmaking titan at last night’s Day 1 of American Cinematheque’s tribute to the stop-motion wizard. At the classic, old-time Aero Theater in Santa Monica, people came far and wide to get a double dose of Sinbad.

Ray Harryhausen dies at 92: Jason and the Argonauts, One Million Years B.C. special-effects ‘titan’ Long before the computer-generated imagery of Jurassic Park, Avatar, The Avengers, and Iron Man 3, there were special-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen’s painstakingly created stop-motion models, which graced dozens of movies from the late ’40s to the early ’80s. Earlier today, Ray Harryhausen died at age 92 in London, where he had been living since the early ’60s. Among his movie credits are Jason and the Argonauts, One Million Years BC, and the original Clash of the Titans. Born in Los Angeles on June 29, 1920, Harryhausen became interested in cinema’s visual effects after watching Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s 1933 blockbuster King Kong, featuring stop-motion effects by Willis H. O’Brien. "I came out of the theater awestruck," Harryhausen would reminisce to the Chicago Tribune in 1999. "It was such a totally different, unusual film.

Get Hammered! week concludes at Trailers from Hell with director Brian Trenchard-Smith introducing the Brit horror studio's "The Pirates of Blood River," in which Hammer regular Christopher Lee steals the show as a ruthless pirate captain invading an island settlement looking for treasure. There aren't a lot of movies about Huguenots, but this landlocked pirate epic is one of them. Made as part of Hammer's coproduction deal with Columbia, American contract players Kerwin Mathews and Glenn Corbett seem a bit out of place, although Mathews and Lee provide some formidable swordsmanship. British censor problems led to a lot of back-and-forth to secure a less restrictive rating.

Every now and then you get a film with a title so cool you just know it’ll never live up to all of the spectacular scenes your mind has just concocted upon seeing the painted DVD cover. It’s largely the fate of ’70s B-movies like Blacula and The Thing With Two Heads which relied on exploitative posters and gimmicky concepts to reel their audiences in, but occasionally you’ll get a couple from the mainstream.
Jack The Giant Killer, alas, is one such movie. A slight and inoffensive 1962 fantasy adventure produced in the heyday of the classic Ray Harryhausen claymation monster movies like Jason and the Argonauts, the film has an interesting set-up (boy saves princess from giant,...

She.ll always be best known as Kay Lawrence, the beauty that the Gillman falls in love with the moment he spies her swimming above him in Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954). Mimicking her movements in the water, the Creature performs a lustful underwater mating dance . he.s directly beneath her but she’s unaware of his amorous overtures in the murky depths of the river. It.s a desire most men (and monster kids) could relate to and Julie Adams is the actress who will always be fondly remembered as the .girl in the white one-piece..
Born Betty May Adams and raised near Little Rock Arkansas, Julie was bit by the acting bug early and moved to California to become an actress. She worked as a secretary to support herself and spent her free time taking speech lessons and making the rounds at the various movie studio casting departments.

Fairy tales, legends and mythology seem to be all the rage these days and the revival of these ancient tales proves that great stories are relevant in any age. Feeding our fascination once again is New Line Cinema and Legendary Pictures. Bryan Singer is going to be directing the 3D version of Jack the Giant Killer which is slated to hit theaters in the summer of 2012.
This version of Jack the Giant Killer will be the second film based on the English fairy tale that has origins that can be traced back to the year 1711. The first Jack the Giant Killer was made in 1962 and starred Kerwin Mathews as Jack complete with Ray Harryhausen-style stop-motion animation.
Nicholas Hoult has been cast in the title role of Jack in the new epic 3D adventure “Jack the Giant Killer”.

Following on the heels of his soon to be co-stars Bill Nighy and Stanley Tucci, things are getting very interesting our own Nicholas Hoult who is working out a deal to sign in Bryan Singer’s Jack The Giant Killer. This confirms the story we ran in December last year putting Hoult fellow Brit Aaron Johnson in the frame.
Hoult was glimpsed last night in the X-Men: First Class trailer in his Beastly guise and readers of the site will know that I was a big fan of the man in Tom Ford’s A Single Man opposite Colin Firth. Roles in the aforementioned X-Men film and Mad Max: Fury Road are in his future but the leading role in Singer’s film is his most visible role so far.
The film is Singer’s take on the tale which has his roots in British folklore and was previously made...

New Line has given director Bryan Singer the green light for the remake of “Jake the Giant Killer.” The story is a dark retelling of the English fairy tale, “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The script is written by Darren Lemke and Mark Bomback, who have previously worked on “Lost,” and “Die Hard 4.” More specifically, it will be a remake of the 1962 version of “Jake the Giant Killer,” starring Kerwin Mathews and Judi Meredith. The story is about a farm boy that becomes a knight to fend off an evil wizard and protect a princess. The next step is for someone to play Jack. According to Deadline, Singer is considering Aaron Johnson, who played Dave Lizewski in “Kick-Ass.” However, other young actors are in consideration as well. Gig Patta’s Take: There are several versions of Jack and the Beanstalk, so I am waiting to see how this story may turn out.

But who will play the giant killer? Apparently director Bryan Singer wants Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson, but it’s far from a done deal. Several young up-and-comers are auditioning/being considered. The script comes courtesy of Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After) and Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard, Unstoppable).
This film has been in development for some time, and almost drowned when Singer considered returning to the X-Men franchise with First Class (which Matthew Vaughn is now directing). Singer is still on as a producer for Vaughn’s film, and is now set to take on Giant Killer, a remake of the 1962 Nathan Juran film starring Kerwin Mathews and Judi Meredith.
Recalling the fantasy tale from my childhood, Johnson seems the perfect fit for the Link from Zelda-like character that is Jack, and with today’s special effects this remake makes as much as the Clash of the Titans remake did – that is,...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Academy Award winning writer Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") will reunite with director Bryan Singer ("Superman Returns") on "Jack The Giant Killer" for New Line and Legendary Pictures.
The fantasy adventure, set to lense in the UK this summer, will reportedly take an 'adult' look at the "Jack and the Beanstalk" legend, revolving around a captured princess and a long-standing peace between men and giants that becomes threatened.
The original "Jack the Giant Killer" feature released in 1962 by United Artists, directed by Nathan H. Juran, produced by Edward Small, starred actor Kerwin Mathews in a fairy tale story about a man who defends a princess against a sorcerer's giants and demons, loosely based on the traditional "Jack the Giant Killer" tale.

Warner Brothers is set to “release the kraken” this Friday, April 2… so, Wamg is set to release the Movie Geeks, wielding their swords of cinematic heroism to establish the most epic Top Ten list of Mythological Masterpieces… ever! This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is devoted to the great Greek mythological stories of heroes, gods and monsters.
10. Hercules (1997)
You know why this movie is on this list? It’s not because it was Disney’s last, great, hand-drawn, animated film of the ’90s. It wasn’t. The film’s not great, but you have to hand it to whatever genius decided the perfect voice for Hades, the Lord of the Underworld, would be James Woods. Best. Voice casting. Ever. Rip Torn voicing Zeus? Another stroke of genius. This was also probably the first time many kids born in the early ’90s became privy to the voice of Charlton Heston, who does the narration.
