- Tommy Joseph Mathews Sr. was born in Bunkie, La. to Tommy Joseph Matthews Sr. and Madie Descant Matthews. Tommy was a veteran of the United States Navy serving as a signalman aboard the USS Saratoga during the Vietnam War and was later employed by the U.S. Immigration Service. In the early 90's Tommy entered an Elvis impersonation contest which led to him winning the role of Elvis Aaron Hemphill in the Sydney Pollack directed film "The Firm" alongside Tom Cruise.
