An intense modern iteration of the titular ocean predator, which debuted in legendary British comic (and forerunner to 2000Ad) Action #1. The debut issue of this five issue mini-series is written by comics fire-cracker Si Spurrier (Cry Havoc, Weavers, Doctor Who, Numbercruncher) and illustrated by rising star Conor Boyle, with colors by Giulia Brusco and edited by legendary British comics editor and marine life expert artist, Steve White.
In the troubled waters off Somalia, a rag-tag group of marine scientists studying a pack of female great white sharks find themselves caught in a conflict between pirates and the might of the Us Navy. But why is the...

Mythic #4
Written by Phil Hester
Art by John McCrea
Published by Image Comics, Inc.
The weird and wonderful world of Mythic, where science is a lie and all the myths and legends of the ancients are what actually make the universe tick, continues in issue number four with half the issue dedicated to the main storyline, and half the issue dedicated to a character, Dr. Baranski, who has been featured in approximately half a dozen panels. While there is plenty of action and a resolution to the battle against the worm begun in issue three, the main story doesn’t progress very far. The brief origins story for Dr. Baranski, while entertaining, doesn’t seem to have much to do with the plot.
The book begins with Mythic Field Team Eight’s Nate and Cass in the middle of a fight against a massive worm that ambushed them while they...

Mythic #3

A giant baby who wrestles enormous lizards? A restless spirit who can’t move on because she doesn’t believe in the afterlife? A two-eyed cyclops janitor who is now a field team member? It must be time for a new issue of Mythic. This series offers up a universe where science is a lie and magic and myth are what keep the universe in balance. When things start to fall apart the members of Mythic Lore Services step in to clean things up. This premise allows for a multitude of strange possibilities, some of which take center stage in issues one and two, but issue three takes an even bigger leap into the weirdness than the first two.

Mythic #1
Written by Phil Hester
Art by John McCrea
Published by Image Comics, Inc.
While Mythic #1 introduced readers to a world where science is a lie and magic and myth are actually what make the universe tick, issue #2 sees a wrench thrown into the works, and the universe – or at least our part of it – thrown into chaos. Mythic #1, while being the set-up to the series and an introduction to the characters, was anything but boring; however, Mythic #2 is packed with action from beginning to end.
The book opens with a dramatic, full-page panel showing a giant, stony hand thrusting up out of the waves of Giant’s Causeway in Northern Island. The hand belongs to a giant known as Finn McCool – that is Hester’s nod at Fionn mac Cumhaill, legendary warrior from Celtic mythology – who, according to one of the Mythic field agents who is pursuing him in an Mv-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft,...

Published by Image Comics, Inc.
“Science is a useful illusion for humanity, a balm for your bone-deep ignorance. It adequately describes your observable world in a manner which brings you comfort. An opiate for the masses, if you will.” So says Cassandra, a member of Mythic Lore Services, the organization central to the plot of Mythic #1. In short, science is a lie, what we know isn’t real, and the supernatural beings we were told are figments of our imaginations, are in fact, what makes the universe tick. Mythic Lore Services ensures that the supernatural ticking continues without interruption, so our world can continue to exist.
The story begins innocently enough, with a rather haggard old woman attempting to return her broken cellphone to the store where she bought it. The salesman, Nate Jayadarma, attempts to help the old woman. However,...

Following the events of John Carpenter’s beloved 1981 film, Escape From New York, everyone wants a piece of ex-con Snake Plissken in Boom! Studios’ new comic book series, but a potential nuclear bomb drop could mean the end for many more than just the gritty anti-hero in the fourth issue. Although it doesn’t hit shelves until March, we have an early look at the upcoming story’s three covers.
“Why We Love It: We can’t get enough John Carpenter! It means so much to us to have brought Big Trouble in Little China to comics the right way. Some of the best Batman stories are where a villain (usually someone like Scarecrow or Dr. Destiny) gets in his head, warps his sense of reality, and shows he’s not a mythic force of justice, but just a kid who misses his parents. Usually, by the end of the issue or episode, he has overcome his fear and deep-seated psychological problems and roars something like the classic Batman: The Animated Series line, “I am the night. I am vengeance. I am Batman.” This definitely doesn’t happen in Batman #37 as Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo continue to subvert everything which makes up the character of Batman, including his detective skills, contingency plans,...

I am Batman.” This definitely doesn’t happen in Batman #37 as Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo continue to subvert everything which makes up the character of Batman, including his detective skills, contingency plans,...

It was over five years ago that a good friend turned to me and suggested I read The Punisher, written by Garth Ennis under the Max imprint of Marvel Comics. In one of the greatest examples of understatement I have encountered in my life, he said, “I think you will like it”. He wasn’t wrong. The series has stuck with me to this day and sparked a love for the works of Garth Ennis that would eventually see me tracking down Preacher and afterwards, The Boys. The final, climactic battle to plant the seed of magic. If the heroes can pull it off they will once again restore magic to the world. Idw Limited has just unveiled their upcoming limited edition hardcover Mars Attacks: Attack from Space, which compiles the first five issues of the Idw comic book based on Topps' outrageous collectible card series Mars Attacks! The compilation is accompanied by hand-drawn sketch cards from a huge roster of artists in many different fields. Idw worked directly with Topps and the contributors, which include series artist John McCrea, alternative gallery painter Apricot Mantle, and trading card artist Nar!, to provide original, hand-illustrated and hand-painted card art. The cards are foil-stamped exclusively for this release. “When we started designs for the limited edition, we wanted to make sure we celebrated not just the Idw comic, but the roots of the series as well,” said Idw Limited director Jerry Bennington. “To us, that meant we had to do sketch cards, and we had to do them right.” The 124-page hardcover will be released...

With titles like "Swamp Thing" and "Hellblazer," the level of master storytelling is strong. Enter a one shot title, "Ghosts," and some easily startled readers may well want to keep the lights on, bed covers pulled in tight and a baseball bat in hand. Not like any of those well help, but to find a ghost story done right is what makes this single comic book worth seeking out. This collection offers nine phantastic stories. And fans of Neil Gaiman's "Dead Boy Detectives" will get to...

*here be spoilers. Writer: John Layman. Artist: John McCrea. Colorer: Andrew Elder. The added exposition in Idw Comic's "Mars Attacks" works very well to tell the story of what the invaders from the red planet want: to take revenge on the entire human race. Issue #4 nicely pieces together the story in a level that makes Tim Burton's movie be like a striptease. In the theatrical take, nobody knew what the Martians were after. The translation device was only used once and a miscommunication got them angry enough to start destroying the world. Burton made a fun campy product, but he didn't delve into any particular pathos other than to evoke some of the ethos that was prevalent to the 90's. In the comic book version, an all-new story is presented. In issue #1, General Zar leads a mission of destruction, to take revenge on the citizens of Earth. He does...

Idw Publishing's "Mars Attacks" #2, available July 2012, is written by John Layman and illustrated by John McCrea :
"I'm a huge fan of 'Mars Attacks' from a long way back," said Layman.
"I own about half the original card set from 1962 and have a pretty big collection of collectables and doodads.
"It's always been a dream of mine to destroy the Earth...with this 'Mars Attacks' series, I finally get my chance."
The first issue will ship with 55 different covers (!), each depicting one of the original trading cards from the 1962 debut set of "Mars Attacks !"
A complete collector's set of all 55 covers in a box replicating the original card packaging will also be offered.
Topps' "Mars Attacks", 'space adventure' bubblegum trading cards were created in 1962.
The ruthless, Martian inter-planetary invasion premise of the cards was subsequently adapted by director Tim Burton for the 1996 feature "Mars Attacks!".

California alt-rockers Cake have been doing their thing for twenty years now, said thing being the blending of disparate musical genres (i.e. country, Mariachi, funk). Cake's most recent joint, 2011's Showroom of Compassion, went straight to number one on the Billboard charts, spawning three hit singles. The band recently released an epically lip-synced, crowdsourced video for the wistful but optimistic single, "The Winter," off Showroom.
