Slash teams up with composer Bear McCreary for an epic new song “The End of Tomorrow” from the latter’s forthcoming album, The Singularity, arriving May 3rd.
The near-11-minute track opens with an instrumental orchestral intro before Slash’s guitar cuts through the mix. His tone and style are immediately recognizable, with McCreary entrusting the Guns N’ Roses axeman with the main melodic lines in the arrangement.

Bear’s brother, Brendan McCreary, contributes lead vocals to the track and assumes a prominent role, as the song traverses many movements and cinematic turns — not surprising given Bear’s background in film, television, and video game scores.
For those approaching the song via Slash’s notable guest spot — namely Gn’R fans — “The End of Tomorrow” immediately recalls “November Rain” in its maximalism and narrative weight, and the Use Your Illusion masterpiece was a direct influence according to McCreary.

One does not simply watch the first season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" without coming away impressed by composer Bear McCreary's luscious and evocative score for the series. Reactions to the Amazon Prime Video show may have ranged from one extreme to the other upon release in late 2022, but hopefully, fans of all stripes could agree that the music of Middle-earth lived up to the sky-high standards set by the original trilogy of movies. While the series remains indebted to the visuals and locations used by director Peter Jackson, there's no doubt that the legendary and award-winning efforts of Howard Shore played just as crucial a role in defining the soundscape of a world inhabited by Hobbits, Dwarves, and all sorts of other fantastical beings. In turn, those contributions certainly influenced the various themes, motifs, and original songs McCreary sprinkled throughout the fantasy show.

Film and television composer Bear McCreary has unleashed “Incinerator” as the latest single from his recently announced album The Singularity, arriving May 10th. The song features Serj Tankian on vocals, and has a sonic vibe that would fit comfortably in System of a Down’s catalog.
“When I got the music, when I got this song specifically, I was blown away,” stated Tankian. “It’s explosive.”
The song is explosive, indeed, starting out with a blistering guitar riff before Tankian’s soaring trademark vocals take the spotlight. About two minutes into the track, Tankian shifts into a chaotic rapid delivery reminiscent of Soad’s “Chop Suey!”
The tune serves as the album’s leadoff track, with McCreary remarking, “Once I heard Serj’s searing vocals, I knew immediately that ‘Incinerator’ would be the first song on the album, acting like a warning that a massive, aggressive, and emotional journey lay ahead.

Surprise, but no surprise: X Chairman and SpaceX founder Elon Musk made a cameo at Prime Video’s Fallout experience on SXSW Thursday night.
While not an everyday occurrence in Hollywood, Musk’s appearance wasn’t shocking as he’s a longtime friends with Fallout EP and director Jonathan Nolan. Not to mention, Musk reportedly lives in the Austin area.
In fact, Nolan sat down for a long conversation with Musk back at SXSW 2018 in which they canvassed several topics including SpaceX’s timeline for Mars exploration as well as hopes for an underground high-speed transportation system in Los Angeles. This all culminated with Musk and his brother singing a rendition of “My Little Butter Cup” from the Steve Martin-Chevy Chase-Martin Short 1980s comedy, The Three Amigos (watch below). It was a trippy experience that bears repeating, specifically because we need a post-pandemic update on SpaceX’s Mars mission.

Following the outsized PG-13 success of both M3gan with its frightening robotic doll and then Five Nights at Freddy’s with its animatronic rock band, Blumhouse has now settled on a familiar childhood companion, a seemingly innocent stuffed bear named Chauncey, to deliver carefully calculated chills in Imaginary. It is a formula that sheds the R-rated explicitness from the horror genre, something Blumhouse knows well, and makes it more palatable for a younger audience not just in ratcheting down the bloodletting, but also in bringing it to a level kids might relate to. And what better than putting familiar playthings at the center of the action, in every case guaranteed to stir up our demons and make us jump out of our seats.
There is no reason to believe that Imaginary won’t also succeed, and this one from director and co-writer Jeff Wadlow (Truth Or Dare) delves deeper into psychological terror,...

He-Man once again has the power in Masters of the Universe: Revolution, and he’s back astride Battle Cat to face Skeletor and other evil forces in the ultimate war for Eternia. After the events of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, fans can expect a return to Motu’s roots in Revolution: nostalgic but cranked-up visuals and fight scenes from Powerhouse Animation Studios; an epic metal score by composer Bear McCreary; and a plot that puts the focus back on the legendary conflict between He-Man (Chris Wood) and Skeletor (Mark Hamill). “We’ve been building to this ultimate battle,” says Rob David, executive producer and Mattel vice president. “Their battle, especially in Revolution, encapsulates every theme of Masters of the Universe: magic vs. technology, good vs. evil, self-empowerment vs. duty to others. It’s all there in every punch.”

Outlander‘s final season continues to take shape as star Sam Heughan takes fans behind the scenes of Starz‘s eighth chapter in the time-traversing romantic drama. Taking to Instagram, Heughan, who plays 18th-century Highlander warrior Jamie Fraser, captured a video of himself walking through Outlander‘s costume department as it would seem. Barbie, Spider-Man, Black Panther – visions of dolls and comic-book characters inevitably will be dancing in the heads of Grammy voters when they sit down to nominate movie music for this year’s golden gramophones.
“Barbie: The Album” seems a shoo-in to compete for best compilation soundtrack, the category for movies dominated by songs. But the Metro Boomin-curated album for the animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” also topped Billboard’s soundtrack chart this year and seems likely to swing into competition.
On a similar note, the third edition of “Guardians of the Galaxy” film inspired another “Awesome Mix” that was hugely popular and seems poised to join its two predecessors as a Grammy nominee. The “Fast X” album and Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with its new songs by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, could also make it onto the ballot.

In the first fifteen minutes of Hell Fest, before entering the Halloween carnival (of the same name), an overly excited Taylor- played by Bex Taylor Klaus – tells her friends about a real life murder that happened at a similar event nearby, the year before.
“What can I say, some people are just evil – they’re monsters, and to them, every single day is Halloween… and they dress up, so we don’t know,” Taylor states.
In response to the protagonist Natalie asking, “Know what?” she explains, “ That they walk among us.”
This quick minute of dialogue is easily overlooked, and yet it’s vital to understanding Hell Fest as a whole. It lays out the theme of the next hour and a half, and serves as a foreshadowing of the evil in plain sight. As well as offering brief exposition about our unknown villain.

Plot: The ill-fated ship, The Demeter, finds its crew being picked off one-by-one during an ill-fated voyage from Transylvania to London.
Review: Dracula is one of the most filmed characters in history. The only other to really come close to him is Sherlock Holmes. Dracula’s story has been retold in numerous ways in these adaptations but there’s one part of the story that always seems to be glossed over until very recently: the lord of the undead’s voyage from Transylvania to England on board the doomed ship Demeter.
This part of the novel is perhaps one of the most disturbing because we know the ending before we get a glimpse into the story itself and it’s not a happy one. The entries of the Captain are haunting and tell of a horror picking off his crew one by one and sailors who choose the cold embrace...

Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins wrote on Instagram, “Fiercely honest and sweet and funny, she was talented in ways I’m not sure she completely understood. Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

AppleTV+’s “Schmigadoon!” took a bold leap in its second season by transplanting its snarky, sympathetic central couple (Keegan Michael-Key and Cecily Strong) from the “Corn Puddin’” territory of musical theater’s golden age to the torn-stocking, cleaver-wielding recesses of the 1970s, with a little hippie free love thrown in for good measure.
Tony-winning choreographer Christopher Gattelli shepherded the series through the complete opposite of a sophomore slump, as “Schmicago!” (the new sort-of title card seen in the opening credits) gave us the old razzle-dazzle in eye-popping dance numbers even more effervescent than the first season’s candy-colored hoedowns (which Gattelli received an Emmy nom for). The affable, versatile choreographer chatted with TheWrap about getting Jane Krakowski back on a trapeze after 20 years, corralling children for big numbers and why primetime dance-competition shows are to thank for bringing the form roaring back to the small screen.

A version of this story about director the music of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine
Led Zeppelin famously invoked J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” series in several hit songs (“Ramble On” and “Misty Mountain Hop” among them), and if you’re looking for the right composer to reimagine Middle-earth for a multiyear Amazon Prime series adaptation, you go right to the ultimate rock-and-roll composer: Bear McCreary.
But don’t let the long dark hair and drummer vibe fool you, as McCreary can craft a dramatic, haunting score for just about any genre there is. “Sci-fi, fantasy, horror, period pieces, these are all things that inspire me and get me out of bed,” says McCreary with a noticeable jolt of energy. “And “The Lord of the Rings” is the godfather of so much of that.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

“65” is a sci-fi thriller that follows a pilot (Adam Driver) and a young girl (Ariana Greenblatt) who crash-land on Earth 65 million years ago and have to survive among dinosaurs and other dangers. The film is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who also wrote A Quiet Place, and produced by Sam Raimi. The film was released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on May 30, 2023.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray offers a stunning visual presentation that showcases the 4K source and enhances the detail and contrast of the film. The Dolby Atmos soundtrack is also impressive, especially during the action scenes and the score by Bear McCreary. However, the disc is lacking in bonus features, as it only includes a few deleted scenes and a short featurette on the making of the film.
In my opinion, 65 is a fun and exciting film that delivers on its premise of space man vs dinosaurs.

A film or TV series is often most effective and potent as an artform when it makes us feel, so what are the best ways that good scores elicit an emotional response in the audience? Which film or TV scores and composers are you most fond of and why? These were some of the secrets revealed by five top composers when they joined Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2023 Emmy Awards contenders: Bear McCreary (“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”), Tom Howe (“Shrinking” and “Ted Lasso”), Stephen Barton (“Star Trek: Picard”), John Powell (“Still: A Michael J. Fantasy show composers Gustavo Santaolalla (“The Last of Us”), Bear McCreary (“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”) and Ramin Djawadi (“House of the Dragon”) knew going in that their respective projects had built-in audiences — and that those fandoms should be kept in mind while creating their scores.
“The Last of Us” showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin told Santaolalla that music needed to be “another character” for the HBO series adapted from the video game he previously scored. Rather than create new themes, Santaolalla organically transitioned the music to TV. The South American instrument called “the ronroco,” which he used to write “The Last of Us” theme, was integral in keeping that connectivity for fans who had experienced Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsay) journey before.
Santaolalla also brought back “All Gone,” “The Path” and other fan-favorite tracks for “The Last of Us” TV series.

Reaction was swift and heartfelt to the news that actor Ray Stevenson, best known for his performances in Rrr, Thor, Vikings, Rome, Divergent and multiple Star Wars series, has died at 58.
Guardians of the Galaxy director DC co-ceo James Gunn wrote:
Damn. So sorry to hear about the passing, far too young, of Ray Stevenson. I only knew him a little from shooting post-credits of Thor 2 & a couple interactions at events, but we had some good laughs & he was a joy to work with. His friends & family are in my heart today.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power composer Bear McCreary wrote, “I’m shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Ray Stevenson. I was honored to write him a theme for his mesmerizingly unforgettable Blackbeard on #BlackSails. What a talent! #Rip“

When it came to composing a grandiose score for Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, composer Bear McCreary knew he needed to write 17 distinct themes. “This show really needed 17 different ideas to carry it through it,” he said during a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen awards-season event.
Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, the series is set thousands of years before the events of the novels. During a time of relative peace in the Second Age of Middle-Earth, the series covers all the major events of the period, from the creation of the Rings of Power to the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.
“I wanted to give each place a theme, and within that a sort of style for each place – you can hear some of those exotic drums in Númenor, you can hear the workman-like industrious feeling for the dwarves, the imperial feeling for the elves,...

Music has always played an important role in Tolkien adaptations. J.A. Bayona, producer and director on Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, told Den of Geek last year that he played music on set for the actors to help them get “the right tone” for their characters, and that “there’s an… obvious sense of musicality when you read the books” which is “all about language and the beauty of language.” The show’s season one finale even featured a new musical setting for Tolkien’s “Rhyme of the Rings,” written by Bear McCreary and performed by Fiona Apple, which was generally well-received by fans.

Review: We Have A Ghost is the quintessential Neflix movie: a solid budget, recognizable actors in supporting roles, and some fresh-faced teen talent performing for a talented director. It also is overlong and does not seem to have any oversight on what should have been trimmed from its excessive running time. Christopher Landon’s movie is a mash-up of Ghostbusters, Harry and the Hendersons, and E.T. Prime Video announced recently that its live-action adaptation of "God of War" will be focused on the 2018 entry in the video game series. Considering the most recent entry, "God of War: Ragnarök" swept this year's Game Awards with an impressive six wins, including Best Narrative, Best Score and Music, and Best Performance, the iron literally could not be any hotter for the striking.
The "God of War" series which, as of this writing, features nine installments, has sold over 51 million individual copies. Of that astronomical number, "Ragnarök" can claim a little over 5 million (it only released in November of this year), and approximately 23 million sales can be attributed to the 2018 entry, simply titled "God of War."
It is perhaps for this reason, then, that Prime Video's live-action production will begin with the 2018 game, which is functionally the fourth main title, the fifth being "Ragnarök." In commercial terms, sure, it makes...

But Princess Disa (Sophia Nomvete) can save them, lifting up her voice in an impassioned song, urging the mountains to free her people. “Disa’s gift is to resonate, and the rocks listen. She speaks to the mountains,” says Nomvete, who plays the dwarf princess.
It’s a powerful scene in episode 4 of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” as her voice saves the lives of the miners, and, as a character created for the series, she establishes herself as a force within the story.
Director Wayne Yip told her that this moment was to be pivotal.
It’s a wordless song, full of lament, pleading and power. “This female dwarf, which we’ve never seen before in this particular way, has a gift, which is...

Plot: Set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher, Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time – the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal conjunction of the spheres, when the planets of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.
Review: The appeal of The Witcher has been, at least for me, the performance of Henry Cavill. Having read the novels that inspired the video game and television series, seeing Geralt of Rivia embodied by an actor with as much presence as Cavill elevated the series from a pulpy distraction to destination viewing. Before Cavill’s third and final season as Geralt premieres in mid-2023, the first live-action spin-off series arrives on Christmas to tell the tale of how the Witchers came to be. Blood Origin, a four-episode prequel set twelve centuries before the main series, is...

“Deep Dive” is a in-depth podcast and video essay series with the stars and creative team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this winter edition, the IndieWire Crafts team partnered with Prime Video to take a closer look at the first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” with showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, stars Morfydd Clark, Sophia Nomvete, and Charlie Vickers, and eight key members of the creative team behind the series.
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” truly embraces both halves of its “based on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien” credit. Lots of people know “The Lord of the Rings”: “The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers,” and “The Return of the King” have sold millions of copies and were later adapted by Peter Jackson into a box-office-conquering, Oscar-hoarding series of feature films.

"The Witcher: Blood Origin" showrunner Declan de Barra knows a thing or two about music. The Irish director is also an accomplished songwriter and musician himself, and his touch is easy to recognize in the new "The Witcher" prequel mini-series. One of the main protagonists is Éile (played by Sophia Brown), a bard who tells stories via song, and music ends up playing a major role in the story. While Jaskier (Joey Batey) provides plenty of great tunes in "The Witcher," that responsibility falls to Éile in "Blood Origin," and it turns out that Brown had never sung professionally before. The fledgling singer manages to do incredible work and has the presence of a well-practiced musician despite her lack of experience, and helps bring the legends of the elven world to lyrical life.

It’s a good time to be a fan of survival horror games. The genre has seen a resurgence in popularity for the last few years but with a slew of hotly anticipated titles just around the corner, a gory renaissance of terror is upon us. Leading that charge is The Callisto Protocol, a third-person survival horror game set hundreds of years in the future on Jupiter’s moon, Callisto. Although technically a brand-new IP, the game’s pedigree has built layers of hype since its reveal. Developed by Striking Distance Studios...
