McDermott’s imagination came, he says, as a side effect of poor eyesight. His new picture book, Ghostbear, blooms with sweetness, sadness and cosmic wonder
Paul McDermott has always straddled the angel/devil, light/dark divide. From performing on The Big Gig as part of the Doug Anthony All Stars to making music, paintings, animated short films and picture books, his work has blended the beautiful and the sinister, the sweetness of nectar with an aftertaste of poison.
His new picture book, Ghostbear, tells the story of a small bear lost and alone in the Arctic wilderness, remembering his mother’s love and the other lovely creatures he’s left behind on his life journey. The book started off as a series of paintings created for the 2013 Adelaide fringe festival. Struggling with his main project, he painted the Ghostbear images as a quick distraction, mounted on giant paper panels, like banners.

Tim Ferguson has a liveliness and enthusiasm that is as infectious as it is energising, even over the phone. .I have nothing to do with Julian Assange, I did not set him up! And anyone who says so is only half-accurate!. It's obvious even from the briefest of encounters that Ferguson is a born entertainer.
First rising to fame in the musical comedy group The Doug Anthony Allstars with Richard Fidler and Paul McDermott, Ferguson has gone on to become one of Australia.s top comedy writers and performers. Ferguson still performs to this day, most recently with his stand-up show, Carry A Big Stick at the 2012 Melbourne International Comedy Festival earlier this year, which explored the impact that Multiple Sclerosis has had on his life and career.
