Freezing conditions. Dangerous stunts. Here are a few examples of actors who've suffered through some high-profile film roles...
When DiCaprio lifted his Best Actor trophy at this year's Oscars, we're surprised he didn't scream, "It's about damn time I won one of these. I slept in a goddamn hollowed-out horse for you people!"
Ah yes, the hollowed-out horse. But there was also the scene where DiCaprio had to eat a raw bison liver, or the sundry moments where the actor had to crawl in and out of freezing cold lakes and rivers. At a time when whizzy computer effects can make the impossible look possible, the cast and crew of The Revenant decided to take a decidedly analogue approach to making their period survival drama, with the long, arduous shoot taking place in ice-cold parts of Canada, the Us and Argentina.

Fantasy novel The Great Divorce, by Chronicles of Narnia writer C.S. Lewis, is to be turned into a film.
Children's author N.D. Wilson has been hired to write the screenplay for Mpower Pictures and Beloved Pictures, reports Variety.
The 1945 novel centres on a man's journey from hell to heaven. He learns that the sprawling, dim metropolis called "the grey town" where he's been living is really hell.
He boards a bus whose destination is a beautiful landscape that turns out to be the foothills of heaven; it causes the man and all the other passengers immense pain, leading them to realise they are intangible ghosts.
They then face a decision whether to travel on into heaven, where it's promised they will become acclimatised to the pain and, ultimately, feel endless joy, or take the easy option and return to the grey town.

Chicago – Who in the world would want to see this film? It’s as excruciating and appalling as the title promises, complete with simplistic depictions of good and evil. Like the bestselling novel from which it’s based, the film aims to raise global awareness about the Islamic practice of stoning women to death, a fundamentalist tradition that still occurs today. Yet are the filmmakers harboring deeper intentions?
It’s impossible to see “The Stoning of Soraya M.” without thinking of the film that it resembles down to its very title: “The Passion of the Christ.” Both films were produced by Steve McEveety, whose company Mpower Pictures markets films to a decidedly right-wing Christian audience. His rollicking patriotic comedy “An American Carol” reduced suicide bombers to sight gags, while “Stoning” reduces the vast majority of its Islamic characters to a bloodthirsty mob indiscernible from the Jews in “Passion.” Does McEveety...

And that's what you get when you combine a producer from The Passion of the Christ (Stephen McEveety) with a writer (David McFadzean) from Tim Allen's TV series "Home Improvement": complete and utter chaos. But when you combine a box office and critical disaster like North with the modern comedy classic Groundhog Day, there has to be some semblance of a decent comedy hidden in there right? That's the hope as THR reports that development on Hello, I Love You, a comedy about a teenager who wishes for a new family only to find herself waking up each successive day with a new and strange one, is progressing well. Sunu Gonera (Pride), seen in the photo above, will direct from a script by Kim Beyer-Johnson, and though there's probably some fun to be had with this concept, the same producing team also brought us the equally recycled and...

Joe Eszterhas (”Basic”, “Showgirls”, “Sliver”) is reportedly working on a new project, writing a script that is about The Virgin of Guadalupe, a vision who appeared to a Mexican peasant in the 16th century. The legend of this vision is widely credited as the instigation of the spread of Catholicism in Latin America. Eszterhas is working on the script for Mpower Pictures, the print company run by Stephen McEveety, the producer behind Mel Gibson’s “The Passion Of The Christ”. News is trickling out that Joe Eszterhas, who has penned such silly-sexy-hackle raising films as Basic Instinct and, yes, Showgirls, is writing a script about the Virgin of Guadalupe. The famous religious icon and patron saint of Mexico appeared in 1531 to a Mexican man named Juan Diego, just one of many of Marian apparitions around the world. A church was built where she appeared; you can read more about Diego's vision and the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City here.
So, what is someone like Eszterhas going to write about the Virgin Mary? Has the Hollywood Animal found Jesus? As MovieWeb pointed out, Eszterhas also wrote Crossbearer: A Memoir of Faith after he's diagnosed with throat cancer and forced with a total upheaval of his personal life. And the producer company Mpower Pictures is behind a mixed bag of titles, from the critically acclaimed movie The Stoning of Soraya M.

Joe Eszterhas was once the face of Hollywood excess. The Basic Instinct screenwriter was equally famous for drugs, womanizing and his multi-million dollar paychecks for scripts that either languished unproduced or became films like Showgirls, Jade and An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn. But he quit the excessive lifestyle, moved to Ohio (much of his childhood was spent in Cleveland) and suffered throat cancer, the battle with which helped him find religion. Writing only one produced screenplay in the last few years (Children of Glory), he instead published a book about his new faith, the title of which, Crossbearer, manages to preserve his trademark self-aggrandizing tone. Now, according to Variety, he's poised to return to screenwriting with a 'labor of love' script about the Virgin of Guadalupe. New York -- He may have sanded his jagged edge, but Joe Eszterhas still, apparently, has the basic instinct.
The polarizing scribe, who hasn't had a film released theatrically in the U.S. in more than a decade, has signed on to a project about the mystical sighting of a virgin in 16th century Mexico.
Eszterhas will write the screenplay about the virgin of Guadalupe, a vision that appeared to the Aztec peasant Juan Diego in 1531. Steve McEveety is a Hollywood oddity: He's humble. I know. Weird. When his last film came out he identified himself as "a producer of The Passion of The Christ." But he wasn't a producer, but rather the producer. As producer of the inspired-by rock soundtrack of that film who spent hours hanging out in his office (it was where everybody congregated) I was able to see Steve's genius up close one day. Although most of the film had already been shot by this time, one day Mel Gibson burst excitedly into Steve's office and explained in great detail, hands in the air, of a shot he wanted to add to the film. A single drop of water would fall from the sky, Mel said, as he motioned wildly, and then hit the ground. Months later, that shot was in the...

Q&A: Cyrus Nowrasteh
With tumult roiling the streets of Tehran, the filmmakers behind Iranian martyrdom drama "The Stoning of Soraya M." find themselves in a rare spot: with a new release seemingly ripped straight from the headlines.
But as distributor Roadside Attractions readies a platform rollout this weekend, it must attempt to capitalize on that interest without appearing to overlap it.
"This is a story that everyone thinks they can see on the news, but they really can't," Roadside president Howard Cohen said. "Our job is to make sure people know that."
The pic centers on a journalist (James Caviezel) and his discovery of a story about a woman stoned to death in 1986 Iran because of presumed infidelity. The milieu of Cyrus Nowrasteh's film is highly specific, but producer Stephen McEveety notes a strong parallel with current events.

"An American Carol" is coming to a theater near you, whether you like it or not.
A zany comedy that promises to offend Hollywood's liberal sensibilities -- coming just one month before the presidential election -- there's more riding on "Carol" than one might expect.
For one, it's the first wide release distributed by Vivendi Entertainment, which launched as a theatrical distribution company in March. Vivendi will open "Carol" on 2,000 screens Oct. 3.
And "Carol" is the first theatrical production from Mpower Pictures, the studio co-founded by Mel Gibson's longtime producing partner Steve McEveety.
It's loosely based on "A Christmas Carol," only instead of Ebenezer Scrooge learning an appreciation for Christmas, a Michael Moore-type filmmaker who is visited by the ghosts of George Washington, George Patton and President Kennedy must learn to appreciate the USA.
"Carol" isn't the only politically charged film set for wide release before voters head to the polls Nov.

Vivendi Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to David Zucker's "An American Carol," which it plans to release theatrically nationwide Oct. 3.
The film -- a flag-waving variation on "A Christmas Carol" -- follows a cynical Hollywood filmmaker who has been trying to abolish the Fourth of July. He is visited by three ghosts who teach him the meaning of America.
Zucker co-wrote and directed the film, which he produced with Mpower Pictures' Stephen McEveety and John Shepherd. Zucker's co-writers are Lewis Friedman and Myrna Sokoloff. Sokoloff also executive produced.
The cast includes Kevin Farley, Kelsey Grammer, Trace Adkins, Leslie Nielsen, Dennis Hopper, James Woods, Robert Davi and Jon Voight.
The deal was brokered by Yolanda Macias for Vivendi Entertainment and Todd Burns for Mpower.

NEW YORK -- Country star Trace Adkins will make a ghostly appearance opposite Kelsey Grammer in David Zucker's indie Christmas comedy "American Carol".
Jon Voight, Leslie Nielsen and Dennis Hopper have cameos in the takeoff on Charles Dickens' classic holiday tale. The singer will play the Spirit of Christmas Future (aka the Grim Reaper), who uses his musical abilities to help Scrooge (Grammer) avoid a tragic end.

His new single, "You're Gonna Miss This", just hit No. 1 on the Billboard country singles chart.
Mpower Pictures' Stephen McEveety, John Shepherd and Zucker are producing. Zucker co-wrote the screenplay with exec producer Myrna Sokoloff. The film is shooting in Los Angeles through April 15.

The hunky actor who stars as Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson's controversial new movie was struck by lightning on the set. Jim Caviezel, who escaped injury, was filming The Passion Of Christ near Rome, Italy when the incident occurred. Producer Steve McEveety says, "I'm about a hundred feet away from him when I glance over and see lightning coming out of Caviezel's ears." The movie has provoked a flurry of criticism since its conception - particularly from Jewish leaders, who say it suggests Jews were responsible for Christ's death. But some Catholics who have seen the film have called it a "powerful rendering" of the hours leading up to Christ's Crucifixion.
