If you never watched the Power Rangers show growing up than you may have no idea who Goldar is. On the TV series, he was the moronic sidekick of Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks in the upcoming film), and other villains at times, that had a gruff speaking voice, looked like an orc, and frankly he was ridiculous -- and possibly one of the best things about the show.
Director Dean Israelite wanted to take Goldar in a different direction, and instead turned him into a gigantic molten mess of gold, that Rita possibly could have conjured up the same way she conjures the other rock creatures we have seen in the preview. For all we know Goldar may simply be her answer to the Megazord. EW had a chance to sit down with Israelite and production designer Andrew Menzies ask about the choice to make this change to such an iconic character.

Rita Repulsa, Alpha 5, Goldar – three pillars of Saban’s Power Rangers franchise that underwent radical makeovers in their journey over to Dean Israelite’s live-action reboot.
On the one hand, Repulsa has been transformed into a slick, beady-eyed alien with lime green armor, while Alpha 5’s new lick of paint has produced a pint-sized assistant to the Rangers that is more akin to a walking, talking organism than a cutting-edge piece of technology. And then there’s Goldar. Oh, Goldar.
Initially designed as a devious flying monkey – a nod to the classic Wizard of Oz – the Goldar of Lionsgate’s Power Rangers is a faceless, kaiju-like monstrosity summoned by Elizabeth Banks’ power-hungry Rita as a weapon of mass destruction. The kind that places every resident of Angel Grove on red alert.

We're still many months away from the release of the "Power Rangers" reboot, but fans of the series now have their first look at what the new Rangers will be wearing when they battle Rita Repulsa.
Entertainment Weekly debuted the image, and it's certainly a striking one: The gang poses in front of a stark, dark background, their helmeted gazes aimed straight at the lens. But what stands out the most is that all of the Rangers are sporting what appear to be glowing orbs in the center of their chests, not unlike a certain Marvel superhero.
Their metallic-looking suits -- so long, spandex -- also evoke Iron Man, though according to director Dean Israelite, designers were hoping to capture a more organic look. "These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit," Israelite told EW. "Power Rangers" production designer Andrew Menzies...

The Power Rangers, much like comic book superheroes, are popular the world over. So it's no surprise a new incarnation of their costumes would garner some strong opinions from fans. Seriously though, almost every Marvel and DC hero that's wound up on film or television in the last few years has gotten crap for their costume design. Iron Man might be the one exception which makes the Power Rangers reveal all that more interesting. Entertainment Weekly got the exclusive reveal of the new costumes. They're still colorful but they're armored to the teeth. It...kind of doesn't make sense. Sure, fighters want to be protected in battle but the Power Rangers are known for their martial arts and it doesn't look like these armored suits would allow for much flexibility. EW reports: The spandex-free makeover also helps set the film apart from other big-screen franchises. “It’s tricky finding a...

Lionsgate is really pushing forward into Iron Man territory.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television franchise, a staple of entertainment for children of the ’90s, was always known for its campy, low-budget production. All that cheap lycra was part of the show’s charm. It was also an element that made dressing up as the Pink Ranger on Halloween easy for little girls (and parents on a budget).
Considering the picture above, from the new Power Rangers movie that Lionsgate has in production, it does not appear as if you’re going to be able to Diy these supersuits when your daughter is ready to emulate Naomi Scott’s Pink Ranger Kimberly on Halloween 2017.
Entertainment Weekly revealed the new image, which features the team of Rangers (Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and...

The new Power Rangers movie may not come out until next year, but EW has sweetened the wait for fans by revealing the first look at the group’s new suits.
While the colors of the suits are the same—yellow, black, red, pink, and blue—the futuristic look of the outfits are definitely a new take on what fans may remember from watching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on Saturday mornings in the mid-’90s.
Here’s what Power Rangers director Dean Israelite told EW about the team’s new look:
“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis. These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”
Additionally, production designer Andrew Menzies discussed how the alien nature of the new suits allows them to literally grow on the protagonists:
“Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made.

For those of you who have been wondering what the new Power Rangers costumes would look like in the upcoming movie, here you go! This image was released by Entertainment Weekly, and it looks like something Tony Stark would have come up with. Talking about the costume designs, production designer Andrew Menzies says:
"It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume. Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”
I never expected the costumes in this film to be spandex. I think we all knew they were going to get some kind of heavy armor-type upgrade like this, so I'm not really surprised. The suits look fine, and it will be cool to actually see them in action.

Still very much in production, we won't be seeing a first trailer for the reboot of the "Power Rangers" franchise for a few months yet. That hasn't stopped Lionsgate from today's reveal to EW of the new armored outfits of the group - their new threads are spandex-free and described as "translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies".
Talking about the look, production designer Andrew Menzies says: "It's tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume. Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that's not man-made. We’ve already clocked eyes on Lionsgate’s radical new version of Rita Repulsa – brought to life with gleeful menace by Elizabeth Banks – and today, Entertainment Weekly has assembled the studio’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.
Donning the famous, color-coded suits of old, it is the fresh faces of Rj Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott and Dacre Montgomery that will be bringing the Rangers to the big screen, and director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) spoke to EW about engineering suits that reflected the energetic nature of their super-powered owners.

Hollywood certainly does a great job of banking of our nostalgia. From comic book movies to reboots of beloved film franchises, they certainly know how to tap into our emotional core as human beings, like it or not. The next group to get catered to will be the many generations of Power Rangers fans, a long-running TV series that's been on the small screen since the early 1990s.
Sure, there have been a few movies in the series' long run, but none of them set the world on fire. The first film--which featured Ivan Ooze as the main villain--while a solid attempt to adapt something to the big screen, failed to succeed on many levels, and after that one, the movies only went downhill from there. With this Lionsgate production, the studio hopes to revitalize the brand for a modern audience.

Director Breck Eisner discusses The Crazies, and his forthcoming Flash Gordon and Escape From New York...
To coincide with the DVD and Blu-ray release of horror remake, The Crazies, we spoke to director Breck Eisner about the making of the movie, and how his next projects, Flash Gordon and Escape From New York, are coming along...
The Crazies is unusual for a remake in that it scales down the scope of George Romero's original, and sets the action in a small town. What was your thinking behind this?
You know, one of the things I wanted to do with the movie was really to take out the military's point of view. The audience got it - they didn't need all that additional exposition to understand what the concept was. Back in ‘73, when Romero created the original movie, the concept of the infection spread through the water needed to be set up,...

In the mini-pantheon of Asian-horror remakes, The Uninvited winds up being more welcome than last year’s underachieving triumvirate of One Missed Call, The Eye and Shutter. Well-crafted enough that it doesn’t feel like an opportunistic knockoff, it suffers less in comparison to the Korean original, A Tale Of Two Sisters, than from the fact that the story ingredients of both are familiar from numerous past genre films.
I should pause here to note that I wasn’t one of the many who admired Kim Ji-woon’s Sisters; where plenty of viewers saw a subtle suspenser that slowly but surely ratcheted up the creep factor, I saw an enervatingly paced film where not much happened—certainly not much that hadn’t been done before and better in other domestic-fear fare from Korea and Japan—and “paid off” in a show-offy, incoherent series of revelations. The Uninvited (which, to confuse things,...

On set interview with production designer Andrew Menzies in Vancouver while visiting the set of The Uninvited due out in theaters January 30th.
{sidebar id=1}Andrew Menzies: ...a more history rather than, 'cause it, before we got here, it looked like urban or suburban because of the way, it's just the driveway, and the presentation even though we're in the middle of nowhere. So, what we did is we just try to make it look more country. We're even gonna take them in this back entrance to make it then come through the woods and just build that remote, more wilderness and try and bring in the character of the mother.
So, those were the request, so I just spend my, I mean, literally, weeks going through thousands and thousands of wallpapers and things that would give them the depth that they wanted from the house. 'Cause, you know,...
