Spoilers ahead. Two more dancers have left the competition after tonight’s performance show, which was guest-judged by renowned dance expert Carly Rae Jepsen. She specializes in the esteemed genre “Pop Carwash.”
I’ll post my full recap of tonight’s performances later on; in the meantime, discuss!
Mariah Spears and Dorian “BluPrint” Hector have been eliminated.
Mackenzie, Jenna, Alan, and Curtis also landed in the bottom six.
The judges asked all but Jenna to dance for their lives.

Hi, guys! Thank you, as always, for all of your questions and comments. (You got me, Al — this must be why I’d never make it as a fact-checker!) Before we dive in to last night’s Sytycd performances, I thought I’d try to ‘A’ Rebecca’s ‘Q’ about what the days leading up to the show are like, at least from my (and, I assume, most choreographers’) perspective…
Usually, once my partner, Tony Meredith, and I get to L.A. (or Canada, obviously, if we’re working on the Canadian version), it goes something like this:
Day 1:...

So You Think You Can Dance welcomed Jesse Tyler Ferguson to the judging panel this week for the Top 12 live performances. The Modern Family star joined Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Sonya Tayeh to have his say on the remaining contestants taking part in Wednesday night's live show. Each couple had to perform two dances. Here's what the judges said: Sasha and Alexander - Paso Doble Dance: Choreographed by Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin, the dance is described as a "battle with love and hate and masculinity". Alexander says that his character is "ready to kill" and Sasha jokes she will "beat his ass". It ends in a kiss. Nigel praises the routine, adding that Alexander had a job keeping up with Sasha. He adds that although Alexander got a little sloppy at the end, he was much stronger than he has been recently. (more)...

You want to be in the top 10? You can't handle the top 10!
And as much as effusive "Modern Family" star and guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson would like all the dancers to carry on for another week, two more members of the "So You Think You Can Dance" Season 8 cast will fall during Thursday's results.
So before we tear these happy partnerships apart, forcing the remaining 10 into the strong, experienced arms of the "Sytycd" all-stars, they get one more night together.
And two dances.
But who made the best of their first double feature -- and who's almost definitely dancing for their life this week? We've got analysis, couple by couple, right here:
Alexander and Sasha
Dance #1: Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin (she of the greatest "Sytycd" moment ever) choreograph a postmodern Paso Doble where the dancers play dueling matadors. The judges don't go overboard in their praise, but...

It’s down to the final 6 couples, and next week they will break up the pairs. So tonight, the couples dance twice! The judges give specific critiques and say interesting and useful things, overall. And if you were waiting for it, tonight’s the night Ryan got told.

It's got to be a sign of the quality of dancers "So You Think You Can Dance" has amassed in recent seasons that they're no longer judged on how well they execute their steps. Instead, the judges struggle to explain these very intangible criteria: growth, humor, commitment, maturity. It's all so vague, I'm itching to see someone really screw up, fall on their face and drop their partner, just so we have some concrete reason to send them home. Sorry, I'm going to dance-fan hell for that, aren't I? Anyway, here are my own arbitrary categories for last night's episode.
Completely Agreeing With the Judges' Praise For:
Kathryn and Legacy: Once I was able to tear my eyes away from Legacy's bare torso, I noticed that Kathryn was indeed killing it (as Adam Shankman put it). She had fire in her eyes and drama in every movement.

What up doc! It's your boy tWitch, still Stomping the Yard in Hotlanta! I am back once again to share with you my thoughts on Tuesday's performance show of So You Think You Can Dance. First thing first: Nigel, you got to let me know where to get an outfit like you had in that pic of you as a 9-year-old. Haha! Love you man! And Nigel, I have to agree with one of my readers (Tina) who said next season there should be a soft shoe routine thrown in. That would allow tappers to show off their talents in...

[brightcoveplayer 29703046001]The game of survival on So You Think You Can Dance has begun! The talented top 10 contestants now must master multiple routines and genres each week while hoping to show enough star quality to get the votes to stick around. And stars were born Wednesday when Jeanine and Jason, who'd both lost partners in last week's cut [1], performed a sexy contemporary piece by a first-time choreographer, season 2's Travis Wall. Dancing to "If It Kills Me" by Jason Mraz, the pair, showing plenty of skin, executed one graceful lift after another until it all culminated into a hot and dreamy kiss. After the standing ovation was over, Nigel Lythgoe told the new pair, "Both of you have really become stars tonight!" The episode had a variety of routines, styles and choreography, with each dancer performing three times: pairs, solos and a group number. Powerhouse salsa dancer Janette, who gave an eye-popping Miami-sexy solo,...

As the competition gets down to the final 10 of "So You Think You Can Dance" season 5, new rules are set, placing the judges out of the decision-making and giving America a chance to vote for individuals. Though the dancers now have to fight for American votes individually, they will still perform in couples, but there's a twist: each week they will get different partner. For this week, Kayla was paired with Evan, Ade with Janette, Jeanine with Jason, Kupono and Randi, and Brandon with Melissa.
Before all of the couples took the stage, the top five girls opened the show by performing a Bollywood routine choreographed by Nakul Dev Mahajan. Working as a group instead of trying to outshine one another, the girls stayed with the music the whole time and earned praises from judges. Nigel thought the group's performance was fantastic and said they were "five of the most...

Well-played, top 10! They're not the most emotive or individually charismatic group of dancers in So You Think You Can Dance history, but technically these dancers are taking this show and running away with it. You know how Tiger Woods forced championship golf courses to remodel in order to keep up with his over-the-moon drives? In the same way, these dancers are so good that the show is eventually going to have to stretch to keep up with them. Now, let's discuss tonight's top 10 competition show, including an outstanding choreography premiere by Sytycd alum and fan favorite Travis Wall... Couples • Kayla & Evan performed a waltz by Tony Meredith and Melaine Lapatin. Evan...

Teaching has proved to be a vital secondary skill in the development of many dancers' professional careers. It can be a valuable method of supplementing your income between performing jobs — both at the start of your career, when you're just beginning to build your reputation and résumé, and as you near the end of your performing tenure, as a way to stay employed in the profession. For midcareer dancers who may want to move into jobs as dance captains or assistant choreographers, strong teaching skills are essential. Even choreographers rely heavily on teaching gigs to try out new material, as well as to scope out dancers they're interested in hiring. If you're looking to expand your repertoire of teaching styles, pedagogical strategies, and choreographic or kinesiological information, there is still time to register for Dance Teacher magazine's summer conference, to be held Aug. 9-11 at New York City's Jacob K.
