JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray recently got to check out the Sundance Film Festival premiere of director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp’s ghost story Presence, and in his 7/10 review (which you can read Here), he described the film as “a supernatural tale that’s light on horror but heavy on heart.” A wider audience will have the chance to see the move soon (we assume), as Deadline reports that Neon has picked up the distribution rights to the film. A release date has not yet been announced.
As Deadline notes, “The deal comes 35 years after Soderbergh’s $1 million Sundance deal for sex, lies, & videotape and subsequent Palme d’Or win at Cannes followed by a box office gross of $25 million, helped galvanize independent film into a viable business. It seems poetic he would return with a film for the 40th edition of Sundance, and make a major deal there.

I haven’t got a deal number to share, but there were about 10 bidders so it’s a healthy sum for a thriller that has gotten uniformly strong reviews at the festival.

“Fifty years is a long time to do anything. And while we might be a little biased, we feel the work that Tff does is pretty important,” comments Telluride Film Festival director Julie Huntsinger. “We take the charge of preserving the theatrical experience and promoting film seriously, but with necessary winks here and there. We’re ecstatic to share a program we feel reflects so much of the past fifty years, naturally and organically, films old and new, which stand as a testament to our beloved co-founders Tom Luddy and Bill Pence who are no longer with us.”

After an aggressive bidding war with multiple major studios, North American rights for Channing Tatum’s film “Dog” have sold to MGM.
Tatum will star in and co-direct “Dog” with his longtime creative partner Reid Carolin. Carolin also wrote the script, based upon a story by Carolin and Brett Rodriguez.
The film is a road-trip comedy that tracks two hard-charging former Army Rangers paired against their will — Briggs (Tatum), and a Belgian Malinois named Lulu — as they race down the Pacific Coast in hopes of making it to a fellow soldier’s funeral on time. Along the way, they’ll drive each other completely crazy, confront the possibility that pet psychics are real, and begin to reckon with the one thing they were trained never to do: surrender.

Steven Soderbergh will continue to explore innovative distribution methods for his next project, “Let Them All Talk,” which has just landed at the upcoming HBO Max. The rom-com-sounding project — like “Wine Country” for film snobs? — seems suspiciously out of Soderbergh’s wheelhouse, and maybe that’s why it sounds so refreshing.
“Let Them All Talk” reunites Soderbergh with Meryl Streep, who stars in his 2019 film “The Laundromat,” which Netflix will take to the Venice and Toronto film festivals. “Let Them All Talk” will tell the story of an acclaimed author who takes a journey of self-discovery with old friends, bringing her nephew, played by Lucas Hedges, along for the trip. Hedges soon finds himself romantically involved with a fledgling literary agent, played by Gemma Chan. Candice Bergen and Dianne Wiest also star. The screenplay was penned by short story author and Deborah Eisenberg, who received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2009.
