The Walloon regional investment fund is throwing its weight behind eight new projects, including the ambitious Black Swan Tales collection of features. For its 103rd session, Wallimage, the Walloon regional investment fund, is funding eight new projects with more than €900,000, including the ambitious Black Swan Tales collection of features, staged by Entre chien et Loup in Belgium. This is a set of four feature-length genre films, all standalone artistically speaking, but all produced based on the same template. It’s a system that’s been tried and tested in the USA, inspired by the feat that the company Blumhouse was able to achieve, spawning a well-known and highly successful work of the calibre of Get Out. Two of the four films will be shot in the French language, and three of them will be filmed in Wallonia. Wallimage will also back three fiction features. On the heels of Paul Sanchez Is.
Gruelling, macho and punishingly dull: welcome to the making-of documentary about Oliver Stone’s Vietnam classic
The cast of Oliver Stone’s 1986 Vietnam classic Platoon heartily exchange old war stories in this making-of documentary by two of their own: Paul Sanchez, writer-director here, played Doc in Platoon and Charlie Sheen (“Chris”), who has been deployed to provide occasional narration. While Sheen had spent time in outh-east Asia before, accompanying dad Martin on the set of Apocalypse Now, he impresses on us just how inexperienced the rest these “no-name grunts” were.

The American Justice Department is planning to ask a New York federal court to terminate the "Paramount antitrust decrees," or agreements made in the late 1940s and 1950s to protect movie theatres from studios. The decrees include restrictions on studios owning theatres, selling multiple films to theatres as a package, and rules for minimum pricing of tickets. Microsoft and Warner Bros. have stored a copy of the 1978 film Superman on a little glass disc. The project serves as "a first test case for a new storage technology that could eventually help safeguard Hollywood’s movies and TV shows, as well as many other forms of data, for centuries to come." Patricia Mazuy is back! And who is Patricia Mazuy, many English language cinephiles may ask? For the past thirty years, Mazuy has steadily built an impressive, if strikingly minimal, cinematic oeuvre while also dabbling in documentary and television. And yet, despite premiering her films at Cannes and working with a variety of cinematic notables, including Sandrine Bonnaire, Isabelle Huppert, Bruno Ganz and Laurent Lafitte, she remains surprisingly unknown outside of France, a matter which isn’t assisted by her features remaining undistributed in America. For the first time ever in the Us, Mazuy is being treated to a retrospective at Lincoln Center in New York, where all five of her features will screen, including her latest, the Said Ben Said produced Paul Sanchez is Back!…...

Legendary French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma has released its official list of the 10 best films of 2018, and per usual it’s a surprising mix of American films and international favorites. The group chooses from films released over the last 12 months in France, which is why Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread” and Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” are included despite appearing on U.S. critics’ lists in 2017.
Topping the 2018 Cahiers du Cinéma top 10 is “The Wild Boys,” from writer-director Bertrand Mandico. The film is Mandico’s feature directorial debut and centers around five young boys — all played by women — who band together to overthrow their repressive captain aboard a haunted sailboat. Bruno Dumont’s four-part limited series “Coincoin and the Extra-Humans” landed in the number two position. Cahiers du Cinéma has blurred the line between film and television in the past, naming David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return...

Established in the 1950s by André Bazin, Joseph-Marie Lo Duca, and Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, France’s Cahiers du cinéma has long been a bastion for quality film criticism. Year after year their rundown of the top films usually ignites a response, but their 2018 edition plays it a little more safe.
Their editors’ top 10 features a few films that got a release in the U.S. last year, but France this year as well as some awaiting a U.S. release. Topping the list is Bertrand Mandico’s gloriously trippy, gender fluid fantasy The Wild Boys, while Lee Chang-dong’s Burning and Lars von Trier’s The House That Jack Built also made the cut.
Check out the list below via their latest issue, also including links to coverage where available.

2. Coincoin and the Extra-Humans (Bruno Dumont)
3. Phantom Thread (Paul Thomas Anderson)
4. Burning (Lee Chang-dong)
