As ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” continues to be hailed as a revelatory comedy series that puts classic networks back on the TV awards map, attention should also be paid to the other great non-streaming sitcoms of its age. Take, for instance, “American Auto,” which, after two strong seasons, has proven a worthy successor to past NBC workplace comedies like “The Office” and “Superstore.” At a time when increasingly dark dramedies dominate much of the television landscape, it’s important to keep part of the spotlight on feel-good laffers, and “American Auto” stands as proof that there is more than one such model on the lot.
“American Auto” primarily takes place in the Detroit corporate offices of fictional car company Payne Motors, which has recently fallen under the control of ill-equipped CEO Katherine Hastings (a perfectly cast Ana Gasteyer). With each passing episode, her central goal of at least keeping pace...

Sunday’s 74th Writers Guild of America Awards will wrap up the guild season, along with the American Society of Cinematographers Awards. Will the winners be an Oscar preview?
“Licorice Pizza,” written by Paul Thomas Anderson, and “Coda,” by Sian Heder, are favored to win Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively. However, they are not facing off against many of their Oscar rivals as the WGA’s rules have rendered several scripts ineligible, including Oscar nominees “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” in original, and “Drive My Car,” “The Lost Daughter” and “The Power of the Dog” in adapted. But if they both prevail, they will have bagged the two top industry prizes as they won at BAFTA last weekend right in the middle of final Oscar voting (it ends Tuesday).

After six seasons and 113 episodes, “Superstore” wrapped things up with a well-received finale on March 25. The episode ended with Cloud 9 Superstore #1217 shutting its doors and turning into a warehouse fulfillment center for parent company Zephra, and the team from the Ozark Highlands store splitting up.
But even as the show — and the store — closed up, the series wrapped up storylines and left nearly everyone in a hopeful place. Even Carol was invited to their alumni picnic, even though she’s Carol.
Before taping the finale, the cast gathered on Zoom for their final table read, and Variety has the exclusive video of that moment. The table read, which took place on February 19, was for Episode 615, “All Sales Final,” which aired on March 25.
Creator/executive producer Justin Spitzer introduces the read, along with showrunners/executive producers Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green. Spitzer, Miller and Green wrote the finale, which was directed by Ruben Fleischer.

NBC will not be moving forward with “Superstore’s” “Bo & Cheyenne” spinoff series, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
The potential series, which had been at the works at the network during the recently ended sixth and final season of “Superstore,” focused on Nichole Sakura’s Cloud 9 floor supervisor, Cheyenne, and her husband, Bo (Johnny Pemberton). Pemberton and Sakura were set to reprise their roles, should the show have advanced past its script-sale phase.
Here’s the logline for the now scrapped project: “Bo and Cheyenne (Pemberton and Sakura) balance their big dreams with the harsh realities of being a blue-collar family in America.”
Bridget Kyle and Vicky Luu were writing and executive producing “Bo & Cheyenne,” which was to be produced through “Superstore” creator Justin Spitzer’s Spitzer Holding Company as well as Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad’s The District. The project hailed from “Superstore” studio Universal Television.

After six years on NBC, “Superstore” closed for good on Thursday with an hourlong finale that saw the return of America Ferrera and the end of Cloud 9, an episode that sent the main cast off in new directions and laid the groundwork for a potential spinoff.
“You’re trying to do something different and tie up loose ends and give the characters nice landing place to reassure the audience that these relationships will continue,” showrunner Gabe Miller said of planning the final ending for the comedy. “We looked back on everything from classics like ‘Cheers’ to– Jonathan and [“Superstore” creator] Justin Spitzer and I worked on ‘The Office’ together.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Perfect Store” or “All Sales Final,” the two-part series finale of “Superstore,” which aired March 25 on NBC.
Arguably the most convincing fib that corporations sell their employees is that the workplace is a family in which everyone will look out for each other no matter what. This is by and large a comforting fiction designed to encourage workers to toil harder, and without complaint, at the behest of a machine continually trying to squeeze more efficiency out of its increasingly over-worked cogs.
The notion might be harder to sell if it weren’t for the frequent outcome of spending 40-plus hours a week with the same group of people, no matter how oddly matched: Through proximity, ambient chatter or sheer osmosis, you absorb the particulars of their lives — children’s names, weird little hobbies, minutiae and major milestones. Beyond...

Cloud 9's last night open is bringing back America Ferrera's Amy Sosa.
NBC confirmed the news Wednesday, just months after it was announced that the series will wrap with its March 25 sixth-season finale.
Fererra was initially set to depart at the close of Superstore Season 5, but it was postponed to the beginning of Superstore Season 6 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The last five-plus years with this cast and crew have truly been so amazing,” the actress said when she announced her departure.
“It’s been such an anchor in my life — a place that I felt so supported and so loved by all of you. I feel like I have grown so much as a person, as a producer, as a director, as an actor… and coming here every single day has just been a gift, and I haven’t taken a moment of it for granted… I hope to be back,...

The cancellation followed the exit of star America Ferrera earlier in the season. The series, set in the fictional big-box store Cloud 9, also stars Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Sakura, Kaliko Kauahi and Mark McKinney.
Created by Justin Spitzer, the critically praised series has examined many of the country’s most topical issues, including health care, immigration, unionization, the plight of the retail worker and more through its own comedic lens. It has consistently been one of NBC’s strongest comedies, reaching more than 37 million viewers last season.

A “Superstore” spinoff focused on characters Bo and Cheyenne is in the works at NBC, a person with knowledge of the development confirmed for TheWrap. The Universal Television comedy is (appropriately) titled “Bo & Cheyenne” and will see Johnny Pemberton and Nichole Sakura reprise their roles, should it advance past its current script-sale phase.
Here’s the logline, according to NBC: “Bo and Cheyenne (Pemberton and Sakura) balance their big dreams with the harsh realities of being a blue-collar family in America.”
Bridget Kyle and Vicky Luu are writing and executive producing “Bo & Cheyenne,” which will be produced through “Superstore” creator Justin Spitzer’s Spitzer Holding Company as well as Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad’s The District.
Spitzer, Fleischer and Bernad have executive producing credits on the potential series.

The workplace comedy will return for its final run of 11 episodes on Thursday, Jan. 14, with the series finale to air in the spring.

“Superstore” is officially shutting up shop.
The NBC comedy is set to end after its current sixth season, which has been interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Episode 113 will be its last, meaning there are 11 episodes left to air.
The show’s end comes as no great surprise, given that its biggest star America Ferrera departed in the second episode of season 6, leaving a gaping hole in the single-camera set in fictional big box store Cloud 9. It has also been struggling a little in the ratings of late, averaging only a 0.8 among adults 18-49 and 3.3 million total viewers after seven days of delayed viewing (season 5 averaged a 1.1 and 3.8 million for comparison).
“Superstore” will be back from its Winter hiatus on Thursday, Jan. 14, and will end in the spring.

Cloud 9 is closing for good as NBC’s Superstore is coming to an end with its sixth season.
The network is ending the show after this current run – taking the total number of episodes of the single-camera comedy to 113.
It comes after America Ferrera departed the show earlier this season. Ferrera, who was set to exit at the end of season five, guest starred in the first two episodes of this season, which returned at the end of October.
The show returns on Thursday January 14 at 8:30pm with 11 more episodes to air this season.
It is the latest comedy move at NBC, which pulled Connecting last month. The network has Brooklyn Nine-Nine returning in 2021 and will have high hopes for new shows including Mr. Mayor, Young Rock and Kenan, which are all set to debut next year.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Thursday’s episode of “Superstore.”)
“Superstore’s” 100th episode on Thursday turned out to be a somewhat sad affair, serving as a final goodbye for departing star America Ferrera.
Ferrera’s character, Cloud 9 manager Amy Sosa, was set to head off to California for a new job at corporate at the end of last season, but last week’s premiere revealed that her promotion was put on hold when the Covid-19 pandemic hit earlier this year.
Thursday’s installment finally resolved that dangling thread, sending Amy and Ferrera off with a series of sweet goodbyes and a sad breakup for the show’s central couple.
“As you might guess, there was a lot of discussion that went into it,” co-showrunner Jonathan Green said in an interview with TheWrap. “We talked about lots of different ways to write Amy off of the show and...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet seen “California Part 2,” the second episode of the sixth season of “Superstore.”
Saying goodbye to any beloved character on a television series comes with a lot of tears, even if that series is a sitcom. In the case of NBC’s “Superstore,” the sadness wasn’t just because Amy (America Ferrera) was leaving her makeshift Cloud 9 family to take a corporate gig out in California, but also because she and Jonah (Ben Feldman) broke up before she left.
Feldman was not also leaving the show, so realistically Jonah could never go to California with Amy, despite that being their initial plan. But the reasons showrunners Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller decided Amy and Jonah should break up, rather than simply attempting long-distance, were two-fold.

Superstore‘s 100th episode doubled as America Ferrera‘s twice-delayed swan song. Thursday’s installment also marked the conscious uncoupling of Amy and Jonah.
The inevitable breakup was foreshadowed in last week’s season opener, which concluded with a panicked look in Amy’s eyes. The decision, however, was essentially mutual. After an emotional discussion in the stockroom, Jonah and Amy realized that they wanted different things: Jonah was ready to get married (and had secretly taken one of Amy’s rings to determine the right size for an engagement band), while Amy wasn’t ready to fully commit, still...

Back in March when NBC’s “Superstore” was shutting down production on its fifth season due to the coronavirus pandemic, showrunners Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller automatically came up with a clever way to address the new health crisis and series star America Ferrera’s exit from the show.
“I remember thinking, ‘Oh it would be really cool to do a cold open jumping us through time of the pandemic and see what Cloud 9 was like in the pandemic, catching up to when we’re airing and we’re out of the woods,'” Miller tells Variety. “We were so naive.”
Seven months later, the pandemic is still ravaging the country, but “Superstore” is up and running on its sixth season — just with a slightly adjusted plan. The semi-essential workers on Superstore return from their summer — and early-fall — hiatus for Season 6 on October 29, and NBC has released a promo (watch it below).
After Season 5 was cut short because of the pandemic, the new episodes certainly will address the dominant topic of 2020, as we see the Cloud 9 staff deal with coronavirus protocols and an errant sneeze near the pharmacy. Superstore and pandemic comedy Connecting are moving back a week as NBC continues to shuffle its fall schedule.
Superstore will return on Thursday October 29, having previously been dated for Thursday October 22 at 8pm, while Connecting, which was originally set for Thursday October 1 at 8:30pm will move to Thursday October 1.

America Ferrera's Superstore run has been extended.
The actress, who announced her departure from the show after five seasons earlier this year, will be back for two episodes of the NBC comedy's sixth season.
TV Line reported the news.
Superstore Season 5, which was cut short due to Covid-19 pandemic, was originally supposed to include Ferrera's final appearance in the role of Amy.
If you watch Superstore online, you know the completed episodes did not feature a goodbye to the character, so this is great news for the fans.
Her departure was hinted at after she accepted a corporate gig in California, but as far as on-screen goodbyes go, there was no sense of finality.
As for what will happen during Superstore Season 6, TV Line also revealed that the pandemic will play a part in the upcoming run.

The cast of Superstore kicked off their Comic-Con@Home panel with a “Comic-Con 2020: The Essential at Home Guide” instructional video that looked very much like a dated Human Resources video you would watch during a new-hire orientation. It was very much on-brand for the NBC workplace comedy.
The video included cast members Laura Ash (Dina), Ben Feldman (Jonah), Mark McKinney (Glenn), Colton Dunn (Garrett), Nico Santos (Mateo), Nichole Sakura (Cheyenne) and Kaliko Kauahi (Sandra) adapting to an at-home version of Comic-Con. This included Feldman talking to an audience of stuffed animals, Ash camping out in a non-existent line to Hall H and Sakura cosplaying as Pikachu.
This was a fun lead in to the virtual panel moderated by Ash. When the Zoom screen popped up, someone was noticeably missing (besides America Ferrera): Mr. Dunn. Turned out he had the wrong time and was scrambling to sign on to Zoom for the panel.
