This Means War
Directed by: McG
Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy, Chris Pine, Chelsea Handler
Running Time: 1 hr 37 min
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: May 22, 2012
Plot: A pair of CIA agents/best friends (Hardy and Pine) go to great lengths to try to win the affection of the same woman (Witherspoon).
Who’S It For? Unless you think Chris Pine and Tom Hardy are the two most attractive men on the planet, consider yourself Reese Witherspoon’s biggest fan, or love the comedic stylings of Chelsea Handler, you should steer clear of this one. Heck, I don’t think it would be worth it even if one of those does describe you.
Movie:
With poorly edited action, few laughs, and the presence of Chelsea Handler, this is a terrible film. It feels much longer than its mercifully short running time to the point where I feared I’d be...

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
Directed by: Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Ciarán Hinds, Idris Elba
Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: February 17, 2012
Plot: Johnny Blaze (Cage) needs to rescue a kid the devil is after. If he can pull this off, the curse of the Ghost Rider can be lifted.
Who’S It For? I have no idea if liking Ghost Rider means you’ll like this sequel/continuation. I never saw the first.
Overall
Am I going to get crazy Cage? That’s really all I care about when we’re talking a character whose head is on fire. The directors (Neveldine and Taylor) are known for Crank 2: High Voltage and Jonah Hex. You might be thinking, “Oh no,” but I actually liked Crank 2 for all of its high-paced action insanity. I also enjoyed Drive Angry 3D for almost the exact same reasons.

The Grey
Directed by: Joe Carnahan
Cast: Liam Neeson, Dallas Roberts, Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney, Ben Bray
Running Time: 1 hr 57 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 27, 2012
Plot: A plane carrying a team of Alaskan oil drillers crashes in the wild. A hunter named Ottway (Neeson) tries to lead them to survival while they fight off a pack of wolves.
Who’S It For?: First and foremost, this is a man’s movie (females are obviously invited too). It’s ideal viewing for a construction worker field trip, or really anybody who needs to have their testosterone humbled.
Expectations: The A-Team, the previous film by director Carnahan starring Liam Neeson, was an overlooked yet satisfying action movie. And in general, Neeson has been picking some extremely masculine characters as of late. Could this re-combination of talent mean something special for The Grey?

Man on a Ledge
Directed by: Asger Leth
Cast: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Anthony Mackie
Running Time: 1 hr 42 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: January 27, 2012
Plot: An ex-cop (Worthington) threatens to jump from a Manhattan hotel, while trying to get revenge on the man who sent him to prison.
Who’S It For? Does the slightest fear of heights make you giggle with nervous excitement? If not, you’re looking at an average thriller with a good gimmick.
Expectations: I knew very little about this flick. Like the title said, I figured there would be a man … and he would be on a ledge. It was an early screening and the first 2012 film I saw.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Sam Worthington as Nick Cassidy: My favorite Worthington performance is as David in The Debt. Let me clarify that a little, it’s really the only one I have appreciated.

The numbers are in, and eBooks may very well be the bright spot in book publishing's dim future--but only if publishers can figure out a way to keep the momentum going.
EBook sales accounted for $46.5 million as of the end of September, according to the International Digital Publishing Forum (Idpf), but that number only represents trade eBook sales through wholesale channels. Retail numbers may be as much as double these figures due to industry wholesale discounts, says Idpf. It's a drop in the bucket for book sales overall, which amounted to about $1.26 billion for the month of September, according to the Association of American Publishers (Aap).
What's most astonishing, though, is that eBooks have sold like hotcakes without a marketing or sales strategy. Publishers are moving quick to catch up as new digital innovations come to market.

How do the people at Pixar keep doing it? How do they keep on creating such superb work and then topping themselves with every new production?
At the heart(break) of this tale, Up is about the love story between Ellie and Carl—and his lifelong memories of the adventures they shared together.
It’s a question that I began personally examining almost a decade ago when I took over the Pixar “beat” at Starlog. Subsequently, I traveled to the San Francisco Bay Area and Pixar’s Emeryville headquarters to cover Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Wall+E. Starlog animation expert Bob Miller spelled me on Cars—since I have zero interest in autos—and Ratatouille—because of my intense fear of French cuisine (rats, I’m just kidding). I’ve met and/or interviewed many of Pixar’s key creative people and written about 20 articles on their...
