During Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy’s R.E.M. tribute tour stop in Athens, Georgia on Thursday night, the original R.E.M. members Mike Mills, Peter Buck, Bill Berry, and Michael Stipe joined them on stage.
The reunion marks the first time R.E.M.’s core four members have been on stage together since their Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2007. Currently, Shannon and Narducy are on tour performing R.E.M.’s 1983 album Murmur in full, which spawned from Mike Mills’ guest appearance with the duo in Chicago last year. Any film that combines the talents of Emma Stone and acclaimed director, Yorgos Lanthimos, is likely to get your average cinephile excited. Throw in Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, and an eccentric story riffing on the classic tale of Frankenstein, and you have a film that absolutely demands the attention of anyone who has a penchant for the peculiar. Despite all the expectations resting on its shoulders, Poor Things lives up to the hype and then some, as Lanthimos delivers another bizarre, brilliant, and very twisted comedy movie; one which excels in every aspect of filmmaking and shows all the signs of a director who continues to push the boundaries of storytelling with his lofty ambitions and provocative concepts.
Based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things is the story of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman who is not quite what she seems. As the...

Actor Michael Shannon and guitarist Jason Narducy are about to embark on a tour during which they’ll be performing songs from R.E.M.‘s 1983 debut album Murmur. They got a good rehearsal in Monday night (December 4th) performing “Radio Free Europe” on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Shannon and Narducy have performed a handful of tribute shows in the past — notably The Smith’s The Queen Is Dead — but the timing was just right for them to take R.E.M. for a spin. Chatting with Meyers in the interview segment of the episode, Shannon reminisced on performing Murmur at Chicago’s Metro this summer, marking the 40th anniversary of both the album and the venue.

Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

There were few bands on the planet bigger than R.E.M. in the mid-Nineties. Their popularity grew every year in the Eighties before they went supernova the following decade thanks to hits like “Losing My Religion,” “Man on the Moon,” “Everybody Hurts,” and “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” Warner Bros. was so desperate to keep them on the label in 1996 that it gave them $80 million for their next five albums, breaking all industry records up to that point.

Filmmaker and video essayist Patrick H. Willems has some thoughts about Zack Snyder (who will henceforth be known as our "himbo auteur"). He's proposed that the key to understanding the director is his love of John Boorman's 1981 medieval fantasy epic "Excalibur." Snyder has expressed his love of Boorman's film many times over the years, even incorporating it into his version of the Caped Crusader's origin story in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Snyder's ultimate goal as an artist, Willems reasons, is basically making his version of "Excalibur," a film Roger Ebert once described as "a record of the comings and goings of arbitrary, inconsistent, shadowy, figures who are not heroes but simply giants run amok."
The more you think about it, the sounder this argument becomes. It certainly explains Snyder's tendency to craft brutal, bombastic films that prioritize spectacle over coherent storytelling or political messaging. Indeed, given his love of mythic storytelling,...

R.E.M. has teamed up with “The Bear” on a full-length music video for “Strange Currencies (Remix).”
The four-minute video combines footage from “Road Movie,” which documents the alternative rock band’s 1995 tour, with exclusive clips and behind-the-scenes footage of the FX series’ second season, which premiered June 22 on Hulu.
Released as the third single on the album “Monster” in 1995, “Strange Currencies” follows a lovelorn protagonist who yearns to win over a mysterious crush. The song was a Top 10 hit in the UK, a Top 20 hit in Canada, and peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.
The remix, which was featured prominently in the official Season 2 trailer on May 15, first appeared on 2019’s “Monster (25th Anniversary Edition),” where the band’s longtime producer Scott Litt revisited the best-selling 1994 album, offering a fresh perspective on each track.

In his third feature outing with ascendant genre filmmaker Ari Aster on Beau Is Afraid, Lars Knudsen produced the duo’s most ambitious, thought-provoking and outlandish work yet — a nightmare comedy of staggeringly detailed vision that is sure to engender conversation.
A nearly-three-hour epic reuniting the pair with A24, this deeply unsettling and quite funny feature burrows into the psyche of Beau (Joaquin Phoenix), a man-child riddled with anxiety who exists in a world in which each of his worst fears is bound to come true. The film bears the framework of a Grimm’s fairy tale à la Hansel and Gretel, watching as Beau finds himself in increasingly surreal scenarios while on a journey on foot to his mother’s house.
For Aster and Knudsen, Beau Is Afraid comes on the heels of Midsommar, an astonishingly dark folk horror starring Florence Pugh, which the former insists is “a joke.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at The National's I Am Easy to Find, by Mike Mills. Mike Mills might be foremost known as a feature film director to the readers of ScreenAnarchy. His film 20th Century Women is considered a favorite among many lovers of modern American independent cinema, and his films Thumbsucker, Beginners and C'mon, C'mon all have their defenders too. Thing is: Mike Mills is a man of many occupations, in all of which he has had some singular stand-outs. For instance: before he became well known as a film director, he was a famous graphic designer, especially of album sleeves. His covers for Air's Moon Safari...

Gina Birch has been creating punk art her entire life—but she’s just getting started. What could be more hardcore than dropping your first solo album at 67? She became a legend with the Raincoats, the London punk band she started in 1977, four renegade women inventing their own kind of racket. But she’s got that same rebel spirit on her new solo debut I Play My Bass Loud, on Jack White’s Third Man Records. It’s a statement of purpose, and one of the year’s freshest, funniest rock albums so far.

Jim Parsons is learning to like control. For nearly his entire career, the actor best known for a 12-season run starring on The Big Bang Theory has been almost exclusively invested in delivering the best performances possible. Even after one of those massive deals to stay put at the late sitcom birthed a shingle, That’s Wonderful Productions, navigating the off-camera stuff often felt like work better suited to someone else. The company has thrived: The Big Bang spinoff Young Sheldon recently hit 100 episodes, the comedy Call Me Kat has been a rare scripted success at Fox, and Netflix’s Special proved a critical darling. But its latest project, in which Parsons also stars, signals a shift. “Spoiler Alert has changed everything,” he says of the movie, out in theaters Dec. 2 via Focus Features and based on Michael Ausiello’s memoir about losing his partner to cancer.

But its latest project, in which Parsons also stars, signals a shift. “Spoiler Alert has changed everything,” he says of the movie, out in theaters Dec. 2 via Focus Features and based on Michael Ausiello’s memoir about losing his partner to cancer.

This review originally ran May 19, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Kenneth Branagh’s childhood was transformed by the Troubles in Northern Ireland, Mike Mills had very eccentric parents and Cameron Crowe was a teenage rock critic — and we know these things because all three directors have made films that drew upon their own childhoods. And now it’s James Gray’s turn to offer his own look back with “Armageddon Time,” which premiered to a rousing ovation in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.
And what does the film tell us about the young Gray? For starters, he was a dreamer, he was a brat, he didn’t understand the privileges he was born into and he went on his own path. In other words, he was the kind of person who just might grow up to make...

Taylor Swift is taking “All Too Well: The Short Film” on tour to the Toronto International Film Festival, where she will appear in conversation with TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey before screening the film in 35mm for the first time ever.
The “In Conversation With…” event will take place Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. as part of the TIFF Bell Lightbox program.
“We love the intersection of film and other art forms, and Taylor Swift is a brilliant visual thinker,” Bailey said. “We’re excited to hear Taylor’s version of how absorbing influences from cinema led to her creating ‘All Too Well: The Short Film,’ which we’ll present in its original 35mm form for the first time at TIFF.”
Swift wrote and directed the 14-minute short featuring “Stranger Things” star Sadie Sink and “The Maze Runner’s” Dylan O’Brien. Initially released in Fall 2021, “All Too Well: The Short Film...

When Taylor Swift released "Red (Taylor's Version)" in November 2021, the second of her rerecorded albums, she also directed "All Too Well: The Short Film." The almost-15-minute video stars Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien as a couple who fall in love and break up, all to the tune of "All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version)." In addition to serving as the short's director, Swift appears at the end as the older and wiser version of Sink's character, complete with red hair. On Aug. 12, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the film is eligible for an Oscar at the 2023 ceremony, competing in the best live-action short category.
At first glance, the short's chance at a statue might be confusing for movie-lovers. The eligibility period for feature-length films - the ones that compete for best picture and best documentary - is Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. But the eligibility window for shorts is Oct.

Who would’ve thought the Oscars to be the venue for a possible “Bad Blood” reunion? Former collaborators Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar, who are each musicians with Grammy wins in the double digits, are now both officially eligible for the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short.
On Swift’s end, she has already hired a consulting firm to guide an awards campaign for “All Too Well: The Short Film,” the project she wrote and directed, which stars Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, and is soundtracked to her No. 1 hit “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version).”

The three Oscar categories that recognize films which run 40 minutes or shorter — best live action short, best documentary short and best animated short — are often regarded as “minor,” but this year’s contenders for them will include some major names.
On the heels of recent Academy Awards ceremonies at which Oscars for short films were taken home by the likes of retired NBA legend Kobe Bryant, former NFL player Matthew A. Cherry and Hollywood A-lister Riz Ahmed, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Taylor Swift’s filmmaking debut All Too Well: The Short Film — which the pop star has described as “a film about an effervescent, curious young woman who ends up completely out of her depth” — received an Oscar-qualifying run, making it eligible for the best live action short Oscar, and is working with a top consulting firm to guide its awards campaign.

Taylor Swift is known for hiding Easter eggs in her music videos, but she rarely weighs in on what they actually mean. However, she made a major exception during the June 11 screening of "All Too Well: The Short Film" at the Tribeca Festival. During a 90-minute talk with "20th Century Woman" director Mike Mills, she spilled secrets about her short film, including why that red typewriter is so important.
The 10-minute extended version of the classic track off Swift's "Red" album was nearly a decade in the making, and the response to it has left the singer emboldened to try her hand at directing more in the future. The Grammy winner revealed to Mills that she has officially been bitten by the directing bug, and she wouldn't be opposed to helming a feature film one day. "It would be so fantastic to write and direct something . . . a feature," she said,...

Taylor Swift is already well-known as a singer-songwriter, but on Saturday she appeared at the Tribeca Festival as a director, a role she’s only taken on in recent years, first helming her music video for “The Man” and, just months ago, directing her short film, All Too Well, soundtracked by the 10-minute version of the song of the same name.
Joined by surprise guests Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, who play the couple at the center of the film, Swift explained her approach to crafting All Too Well and how she moved into directing, in a conversation with director Mike Mills.
She explained that early in her career she started to get involved with the editing process of her videos and making changes.
“It started with meddling,” she said. About 10 years ago, she explained, she started writing elaborate treatments for her videos and “outsourcing the directing,...

Yes, she absolutely sang.
Though the Taylor Swift “In Conversation” event Saturday as part of the Tribeca Festival was billed as an hour-long chat with Swift and director Mike Mills about Swift’s work as the director, producer, writer, and star of “All Too Well: The Short Film” it just wouldn’t have been a complete event without, you know, the singer actually singing. Which she did, as the event drew to a close.
“Do you have an extra 10 minutes?,” she said with a smile before launching into a very special “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” performance, complete with a bright red guitar and plenty of fan screams.
Prior to that thrilling singalong, a sold-out crowd of about 3,000 was treated to a conversation between Swift and “Beginners” director Mills at the Beacon Theatre. The pairing wasn’t quite as random as it may first appear; Swift noted she and Mills...

For hundreds of Swifties in New York City, today was a fairy tale.
That’s because Taylor Swift made a rare public appearance, at Tribeca Festival, to screen her short film “All Too Well” and talk with filmmaker Mike Mills (“20th Century Women”) about bringing the 10-minute track to the big screen.
“This is not a music video,” she informed the audience at the Beacon Theatre on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. “We approached everything differently.”
In a wide-ranging conversation, the notoriously private pop star also revealed easter eggs in the short film, discussed her ambitions to direct a movie and treated fans to a surprise performance of “All Too Well.” Seated near the stage, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were among the many in the crowd who enthusiastically sung along, clapped and took videos of Swift throughout the lengthy track.
And now it’s actually a concert: Taylor Swift is performing #AllTooWell pic.

Taylor Swift delivered surprise guests and a surprise acoustic performance of All Too Well along with a thoughtful half-hour of conversation about filmmaking with writer-director Mike Mills at the Tribeca Festival.
After a screening of her short film All Too Well (set to her elongated version of the song of the same name on the re-recorded version of the album Red released last year), she and Mills covered a range of topics. In addition to drilling down on the short, they talked about the challenges for female directors, the ins and outs of collaboration and the effort to dramatize a couple’s “failure to communicate.” Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, who play the main couple in All Too Well, were not billed to be part of the afternoon but they were brought onstage for the latter half of the talk.

Tribeca Festival, the event that wants to offer something for everyone, returns Wednesday with its sprawling collection of features and shorts, live music, TV, podcasts, games, and Ar/VR. The annual New York City-set fest has moved mostly back indoors this year, but will feature nods to 2021 like free outdoor screenings and an online edition, Tribeca At Home. A rich documentary slate tackles abortion, press freedom and the rise of social media. There’s a first-time award for environmental impact and a series of talks with Blackhouse Foundation centered on Poc storytelling.

Drive-By Truckers recall their early days as a bar band — under the name of Adam’s House Cat — in the wryly nostalgic trip “Welcome 2 Club Xii.” It’s a song torn from the pages of their own experience, when Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley struggled to keep the attention of hair-metal fans during bad opening-slot gigs.
“Sidewinders in spandex/the parking lot is packed…meanwhile Adam’s House Cat is the opening act/with train songs and ‘People Who Died,’” Hood sings, nodding to the Jim Carroll Band song the band still covers today.

It’s all come down to this. Ninety-four years of Oscar history have been digested and cross-examined to help yield the critical answer: Which films and performances will win Academy Awards on March 27?
By the sheer scope of its nomination tally, Netflix is the closest it’s ever been to taking home the statuette for the Academy’s most prestigious prize. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” has won the most critics’ awards for best picture, and the film has walked away with the top honor at the BAFTA and DGA ceremonies, which have Oscar-voter crossover. However, in what feels like an even divide, some Academy members told Variety they were ranking it at No. 1 on their preferential ballot, while others were putting it toward the bottom of that category.

Many believe the supporting actor Oscar race has been whittled down to two contenders: critical favourite Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of The Dog”) and SAG champ Troy Kotsur (“Coda”). And while the precursor results this year largely point toward that conclusion, there are a multitude of factors that point to the BAFTA winner not being either Smit-McPhee nor Kotsur but rather Ciaran Hinds (3rd in our combined odds) for the Focus Features crowd pleaser “Belfast.” Here are 5 reasons why you should be predicting Hinds to pull off the mighty upset this Sunday.
In other precursors where Hinds has been nominated (Critics’ Choice and Golden Globes), he’s had to compete with his “Belfast” co-star Jamie Dornan. BAFTA is the first in which Hinds doesn’t have to vie against Dornan and this will benefit him greatly. All of the passion for “Belfast” will now be channeled directly towards Ciaran’s name,...

The 37th Annual Independent Spirit Awards took place on Sunday, returning to an in-person format following last year’s virtual ceremony. Many of the biggest names in the independent film community made the trek out to the beach in Santa Monica with the hopes of taking home the most coveted prizes in indie film. While the Spirit Awards typically take place the week before the Oscars, this year’s unique Covid-influenced awards season calendar meant that they were held nearly a month in advance. Hollywood couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally served as emcees of the proceedings.
This year’s class of nominees draws from films largely shut out from the Oscars, with indie hits like Oscar nominee “The Lost Daughter,” “C’mon C’mon,” and “Zola” racking up the most nominations. “The Lost Daughter” cleaned up, with three wins for Netflix including Best Feature and Best Director Maggie Gyllenhaal. 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards: ‘The Lost Daughter’ Takes the Top Prize (Complete Winners List)
The 37th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out Sunday at the Santa Monica Pier, with comedy power couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally serving as hosts.
There weren’t too many surprises throughout the night. Troy Kotsur won the first award of the evening, Best Supporting Male Actor for “Coda,” very much as predicted. Taylour Paige took home Best Female Lead Actor, for “Zola,” while Simon Rex, of “Red Rocket,” walked away with Best Male Lead. Ruth Negga won Best Supporting Female Actor for “Passing,” beating out Jessie Buckley from “The Lost Daughter.”
But Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante book won the three other categories in which it was nominated — Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Feature — and was the night’s biggest victor. Gyllenhaal gave three effusive thank you speeches, spreading her appreciation around to her cast, crew, financiers, publicist, husband and mother. “Women in film!
