Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Dune are among the movies that received multiple Hpa (Hollywood Professional Association) Award nominations. The annual Hpa Awards recognizes postproduction talent in areas including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects.
The voting period runs from September to September, meaning that some of last year’s award season films will compete against this year’s contenders.
The awards will be handed out Nov. 17 at the Hollywood Legion Theater.

With Disney’s animated sci-fi adventure “Strange World” (opening theatrically November 23), the studio leans into its legacy just as it prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2023. In fact, legacy is the theme of this film about a racially mixed family of explorers venturing into uncharted territory. The Clade clan centers on legendary patriarch Jaeger (Dennis Quade); his farmer son, Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal); Searcher’s wife, the expert pilot Meridian; and their restless teenage son, Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White).

“Dune,” “Nightmare Alley” and “West Side Story” have won the top feature-film awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday night.
“Dune” won in the Feature Effects/Foley category, which over the years has been the Mpse’s most accurate predictor of Oscar success. “Nightmare Alley” won in the Feature Dialogue/Adr category, while “West Side Story” won in the music category.
Other film awards went to “Raya and the Last Dragon” for animation, “The Rescue” for documentary and “Cliff Walkers” for foreign-language feature.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors are out with nominations for the 68th annual Golden Reel Awards, which recognize sound artists in 22 categories spanning film, TV, toons, computer entertainment and student productions.
Eight films will vie in the marquee Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Feature Underscore category: The Invisible Man, The Midnight Sky, News of the World, Sound of Metal, Tenet, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Wonder Woman 1984.
Winners will be announced during an international virtual trophy ceremony on Friday, April 16.
The Golden Reels also will honor Mad Max franchise director George Miller with the 2021 Mpse Filmmaker Award.

Darius Marder’s innovative “Sound of Metal” and Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World” western each grabbed three sound editing nominations at the 68th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards (which will be held virtually on April 16). “Sound of Metal,” the frontrunner, captures Riz Ahmed’s heavy-metal drummer slowly losing his hearing, while “News of the World” creates the shootouts, sandstorms, and rainstorms that assault Tom Hanks on his journey in post-Civil War Texas. With giant interstellar battles, historic car races and intimate moments with iconic performers on the line, the sound teams behind many of the year’s best films stretched to design next-level soundscapes.
Live performances just about always prove tricky, but Adrian Bell, production sound mixer for “Judy,” was able to find things in them that became essential to telling the story of fading icon Judy Garland.
“The aim is to make the performance look completely believable, that the music and vocals are being performed right there in the location,” Bell says. “Some of the challenges here included mixing some of our work with the pre-recorded music and vocals that had been laid down before we started filming. There are also various nuances within a performance, which makes the song come alive, such as breaths, footsteps, pauses in the song, microphone-handling noise and crying. “Avengers: Infinity War” is stuffed with the largest number of superheroes ever to populate a movie. Directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, the 19th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe marks their third collaboration with editors Jeffrey Ford and Matthew Schmidt; they also cut “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War.”
Ford and Schmidt crafted the story using more than 900 hours of footage that emerged from 180 days of principal photography and another 100 days of second-unit work, most of which was shot using Imax cameras.
“As the material came in, we would watch it together and then divide it up in order to make our rough assemblies,” says Ford. “Then slowly, we’d start to care for certain sequences. If Matt knew a little bit more about one sequence, he’d work on that while I worked on another.”

The sound in “Dunkirk” is crucial for this almost-silent, radically structured action movie. And “War for the Planet of the Apes” is also relatively dialogue light–except when Woody Harrelson’s Kurtz-like Colonel and Andy Serkis as Caesar explode in a dramatic face-off. Latest 2015 Awards Roundup: "Birdman" Triumphs with Cinematography, Sound Mixing and Editing Awards!
With one week before the Academy Awards, "Birdman" continues its triumphant march towards Oscar glory. Just this past weekend, the Alejandro González Iñárritu contender won the top awards at the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) awards, the 62nd Sound Editors' Golden Reel, and the 51st Cinema Audio Society. The film also took home the Best Contemporary Hair Styling award from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild.

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.

Cling. Clang. Crash. Welcome to the category of Best Sound Editing, which awards the creation and integration of artificial sounds into a movie's soundtrack. This distinguishes this category from Best Sound Mixing, which awards the mixing of the film's overall soundtrack. Due to the emphasis on creating artificial sounds, action films and war films tend to do particularly well here. The branch is also not afraid to give a film a standalone nomination (this decade, that has included "All is Lost," "Tron: Legacy," "Drive" and "Unstoppable"). In the not-too-distant past, animated films were also practically annual staples, which is unsurprising given the need to manifest everything you hear in such productions. The sound branch has its favorite contenders who regularly return. Names like Richard Hymns and Wylie Stateman immediately jump to mind. This is likely the case to a greater extent in Sound Editing than Sound Mixing. But every year also sees new nominees.

Luc Besson's Lucy — which topped the North American box office this past weekend with a $44 million debut — features Scarlett Johansson as a woman who, accidentally caught in dangerous circumstances involving drugs, gains access to the full potential of her brain. The visuals include CG images to show the inside of Lucy's brain as it transforms, as well as many images reflecting periods of evolution. "Avatar" won two trophies at the 57th annual Golden Reel Awards given by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse). James Cameron's game-changing sci-fi film took home Best Sound Editing of Music in a Feature Film award and Best Sound Effects and Foley in a Feature.
The Mpse also honored Steven Spielberg with its 2010 Filmmaker Award.
