If you thought Maïwenn’s Johnny Depp movie Jeanne du Barry arrived at Cannes with a lot of baggage, Catherine Corsini’s Homecoming didn’t spare in its ruffling of French media feathers with stories about harassment of workers on the pic’s set and a masturbation scene involving minors.
Corsini and her producer Elisabeth Perez already addressed and defended themselves against several of these allegations in a published open letter in April, specifically that the masturbation scene in question between the film’s 15-year old and 17-year-old actors saw them “both dressed, and the scene filmed their faces” with “no touching or inappropriate contact between the two.”
On Thursday at a press conference after last night’s world premiere, Corsini reflected on what she’d do differently when shooting future sex scenes, while many of the actors from the film also at the conference defended their cinematic maestra as well.

A French producer who said he was boycotting the Cannes Film Festival over its selection of Catherine Corsini’s Competition film Homecoming, claims his accreditation has been cancelled in retaliation.
Marc Missonnier, whose credits include François Ozon’s 8 Femmes and Swimming Pool as well as Xavier Giannoli’s Marguerite, previously criticized Cannes for including Homecoming after accusations of misconduct on set.
He wrote on Twitter tonight (translated from French): “I’ve just arrived on Croisette like every year for more than 30 years. Even if this year will be different because, as I announced, I will not be going to see any of the films in Official Selection.”

Streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV Plus will soon be forced to play a more significant role in the financing of European content when the Audiovisual Media Services Directive officially kicks off on Jan. 1.
While each of the European Union’s member states is in the process of exploring ways to adapt the directive — which requires streamers to allocate at least 30% of their catalogues to local programming — France is leading the charge, powered by a task force of representatives from the producers and directors guilds, along with the National Film Board (Cnc) and the Directorate-General for Media and Culture Industries (Dgmic). At a special screening of “Roma” in Paris, Alfonso Cuaron said he owed the film to Cannes artistic director Thierry Fremaux, who encouraged him to return to Mexico to make a movie – and who, ironically, failed to nab the title for Cannes because of the festival’s spat with Netflix.
Fremaux was eager to select the film to compete at Cannes but could only offer it an out-of-competition slot because of a new rule, passed by Cannes’ board, requiring all competing films to have theatrical distribution in France. “Roma” world-premiered at the Venice Film Festival instead, where the Netflix-backed title won the Golden Lion. It’s now one of the favorites for the best picture Oscar.
While presenting the film Wednesday at the Max Linder Panorama single-screen theater in the heart of Paris, Cuaron recalled speaking to Fremaux about his next project while at the Morelia Film Festival in Mexico four years ago.

Playtime, the leading international sales and co-production companies behind Olivier Assayas’s “Non-Fiction” and Laszlo Nemes’s “Sunset,” is rolling into Mipcom with its first TV drama slate.
Headed by former Fox executive Virginie Boireaux, Playtime’s TV division has boarded a pair of high-concept shows with female protagonists — “Mental” (“Hp”), a comedy-drama series about Sheila, a twenty-something intern in psychiatry who discovers the burlesque and tragic world of madness; and “Helvetica,” a political thriller mini-series about Tina, a native of Albania in her forties who works as a maid in government offices in Switzerland, and turns into a double agent for the Balkan mob and the Swiss counter-terrorism agency.
“‘Mental’ and ‘Helvetica’ represent perfectly what Playtime is about regarding our international TV ambitions: strong scripts with high concepts,” said Boireaux, who is head of TV sales and acquisitions at Playtime.

Festival under pressure from France’s powerful exhibition lobby.
Netflix’s decision to give the Cannes Film Festival a miss this year following the competition ban for films without theatrical distribution in France will likely pour oil on the country’s already inflamed media chronology debate.
The stand-off between the festival and the platform hinges in part on France’s strict media windows legislation which imposes a 36-month delay between a film’s theatrical release and its diffusion on an SVoD platform.

On the eve of this week’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris, Melanie Goodfellow examines why the French film industry looks set for a challenging 2014.
Barely two years ago, the French cinema industry was riding high: record audiences, record exports and seven Oscars for The Artist. French film was not only cool, it was also very, very successful.
But as the industry’s main players gather for the Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris (Jan 10-20), the mood will be gloomy: 2013 was tough at home and abroad, 2014 threatens to be even tougher.
Some wonder how Europe’s most powerful film industry will emerge from the perfect storm of recession at home, the disruptive force of technology and threats to what was once viewed as the one of the most successful film financing systems in the world.
“The mood across the industry is very tense and nervous at the moment, whatever the sector...

Game of Thrones star, Richard Madden is apparently all set to join previously announced Rebecca Hall in an upcoming Patrice Leconte‘s period piece titled A Promise. I’m not so excited about the whole thing, simply because we have a story that is set during pre-World War I Germany, but I like the cast, so what the hell, I’ll give them a try.
A Promise will follow Madden as young engineer who goes to work for a wealthy older man and ends up falling for the benefactor’s wife, played by Hall. The war forces them to part and the relationship is put on hold until the two meet nine years later.
See, this story already sounds too familiar…
Director Leconte wrote a script together with Jerome Tonnerre, and Olivier Delbosc and Marc Missonnier will produce through Fidelite Films.
Production is set to start at the end of the year.

Taken ass-kicker Liam Neeson has joined the cast of The Next Three Days from Lionsgate. Starring opposite Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks, the 57-year-old will be playing an ex-con who helps free the wife (Banks) of a professor (Crowe) from jail where she is imprisoned for a crime she didn’t commit.
Neeson’s role is merely a cameo so don’t expect to see too much of the Irish actor.
The Next Three Days is based on Pour Elle, a 2008 French film directed by Fred Cavayé. Add it to your Netflix queue now so you can act like an elisit and tell your friends that the new version doesn’t hold a candle to the French original.
The American version will be directed by Paul Haggis with Michael Nozik, Marc Missonnier and Olivier Delbosc producing.
Neeson is currently busy filming the movie adaptation of the so-so ’80s series The A-Team.
