Encyclopocalypse Publications and Shout Factory Partner for Chopping Mall Novelization: "In a thrilling development for horror fans and bibliophiles alike, Encyclopocalypse Publications has joined forces with Shout Factory to novelize the cult classic 1986 film Chopping Mall. Produced by the legendary Roger Corman, Chopping Mall has been a mainstay of the horror genre.
Since acquiring the rights to Roger Corman's library in 2018, Shout Factory has been exploring innovative ways to bring these classic films to a broader audience. This partnership with Encyclopocalypse Publications marks a new chapter in that journey.
The novelization of Chopping Mall will be penned by author Brian G. As far as I’m concerned, director Jim Wynorski’s 1986 film Chopping Mall (watch it Here) ranks up there as one of the most entertaining horror movies of the ’80s, which is the decade that brought a lot of my favorite horror movies into the world. It’s also a movie that doesn’t seem to get referenced often enough, and doesn’t get as much respect as it deserves – even if James Wan wants to remake it and Shout Factory TV aired it for 24 hours straight on Black Friday. So I’m glad to see that Chopping Mall is getting some love from the folks at Encyclopocalypse Publications, who have announced that they’re teaming up with Shout Factory and author Brian G. Berry for a Chopping Mall novelization!
Written by Wynorski and Steve Mitchell, Chopping Mall has the following synopsis: Some people will kill for a bargain… and...

John Frankenheimer’s 52 Pick-Up is one of the better of the willfully decadent American thrillers from the 1980s that are preoccupied with drugs, guns, strippers, prostitutes, money, and the men who kill each other attempting to obtain them. Though this film isn’t generally mentioned in discussions of the adaptations of Elmore Leonard’s work, the crime master’s imprint is felt on the scenes that routinely threaten to elevate 52 Pick-Up from a sleazy, well-paced time-killer to an authentically good movie. Leonard’s sense of humor is under-emphasized, but his satirical notion of crime as a business beholden to the same petty political trivialities as more “legitimate” enterprises is explicitly accounted for.
When self-made industrialist Harry Mitchell (Roy Scheider) is blackmailed by a couple of vicious hoods, he remains unflappable while amusingly entering into negotiations with them over the terms of his exploitation. Though this is never fully acknowledged in Frankenheimer’s film,...

The 1980s were full of robots, lasers, odd fashion choices, and teen films, including the now cult film Chopping Mall (watch it Here). In this 1986 sci-fi film, a group of teenage friends and mall workers end up stuck in the Mall after closing hours when a trio of security robots are deployed for the first time.
In the 80s, anything futuristic or with robots seemed to get greenlit with budgets of varying levels and quality of varying degrees. Some of these films took themselves very seriously, too seriously even. However, Chopping Mall was one of those films with the perfect mixture of low budget, the right talent in front of and behind the cameras, and the right level of seriousness to its content and how it was approached. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it doesn’t go full-on goofy, either. There is a “just right” aspect...

James Wan has produced and/or directed some of the most popular horror films to be released in the last twenty years. His résumé includes Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, and the franchises each one of those spawned. And in his daydreams, he imagines adding remakes of the 1980s classics Chopping Mall (watch it Here) and Night of the Creeps (watch that Here) to the list as well.
Speaking with SlashFilm, it came up that Wan likes movies that could be termed “frightful fun”, much like his recent, totally insane directorial effort Malignant and the upcoming sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review), which he produced. Wan said, “I have many horror films that I think that are just fun that I love, and I’m pretty sure the horror community shares them with me. I love movies like Chopping Mall. Byron Studios has appointed former Network 10 chief Paul Anderson as its CEO, with the executive to work with co-founders Will Gammon and Mark Holden to steer its development.
Currently Byron Studios currently offers four facilities across the Northern Rivers, while also developing with Ballina Shire Council plans for a new and ambitious ‘state-of-the- complex and media precinct.
Anderson relocated to the Northern Rivers earlier this year, having stood down from his dual roles as 10 CEO and EVP ViacomCBS Network International Australia and New Zealand last March after 17 years.
While Byron Bay and surrounds have always been home to creatives from across the arts, Anderson sees the planned studio complex as filling an infrastructure gap that will give sustainability to the region’s screen and media industry, as well as providing a multiplier effect on the economy.

“No, She’S The Sane One”
By Raymond Benson
Frank Perry was a notable director and screenwriter who in the early part of his career made some acclaimed motion pictures—David and Lisa (1962), The Swimmer (1968), Last Summer (1969), and this one, Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970). Unfortunately, his later career was marked by problems (he directed the much-maligned Mommie Dearest in 1981, for example). The earlier films were written by or co-written with his then-wife and talented scribe, Eleanor Perry.
Diary is a picture of its time and yet it can still resonate today with regards to the #MeToo movement. The 1970 vibe is overpowering, for this was when Women’s Liberation was on the rise and very much in the public consciousness. In this case, Eleanor Perry is the sole writer, adapting the script from a 1967 novel by Sue Kaufman. Starring newcomer Carrie Snodgress, who...

Shelley Birse has taken home the Australian Writers’ Guild’s (Awg) 2020 John Hinde Award for Science Fiction Writing for Stan Original series The Commons.
Birse, the creator of the show, receives $10,000 for the drama which offers a glimpse into a not-too-distant future where climate change and biotechnology raise important ethical questions for humanity.
The annual award, first presented in 2008, is funded by a bequest from the late film critic John Hinde. It was Hinde’s wish that future generations of Australian science-fiction screenwriters be nurtured through industry opportunities.
Highly commended in the produced category were Antony Webb’s Awgie-nominated short film Carmentis and episode 13 of The Unlisted, written by Mithila Gupta.
David Peterson’s feature script Untethered won in the unproduced category.

“Lonesome Cowboy”
By Raymond Benson
The late actor Kirk Douglas has often cited that one of his favorite pictures he ever made was Lonely are the Brave, a “western” set in its contemporary year of release (1962).
Based on Edward Abbey’s 1956 novel, The Brave Cowboy, the picture was shot on location in New Mexico and directed by David Miller, a craftsman who worked with a variety of genres and subjects (he gave us the 1952 film noir Sudden Fear and the 1941 Billy the Kid). Most significantly, the screenplay is by Dalton Trumbo, whom Douglas “rescued” from blacklist hell two years earlier by giving the writer screen credit for his work on Spartacus (and effectively ending the blacklist). It is indeed Trumbo’s script—and Douglas’ fine performance—that makes Lonely are the Brave a quality movie.

Documentaries about film have always been received well at the Imagine Film Festival in Amsterdam, and Steve Mitchell's King Cohen, which was shown this year, is not an exception. It helps of course that the subject of the film, writer-director-producer Larry Cohen, is a very entertaining one. As a director, Larry Cohen has been responsible for several cult classics in the seventies and eighties, most famous of which are Bone, It's Alive, Q, and The Stuff. But his real prowess and influence was probably as a writer, with loads and loads of fan favorites bearing his name in the credits. As the documentary shows, Larry Cohen wrote plenty of scripts, but after a few years he got so annoyed by how these were tainted by...

Prolific filmmaker Larry Cohen was recently the subject of Steve Mitchell's documentary King Cohen, so it's fitting that Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of Full Moon High (coming out on April 10th) will feature a new audio commentary with Cohen that is moderated by Mitchell:
Press Release: Los Angeles, CA – The ‘80s cult classic Full Moon High comes howling to Blu-ray on April 10, 2018, from Scream Factory. Bonus features include a New audio commentary with writer/producer/director Larry Cohen (It’s Alive, Q: The Winged Serpent, God Told Me To), moderated by King Cohen filmmaker Steve Mitchell, as well as the theatrical trailer.
The problem of a typical high-school teenager takes on monstrous proportions in this comical send up of horror movies from legendary cult filmmaker Larry Cohen.
The most important thing to quarterback Tony Walker (Adam Arkin, Halloween H20) is to win the big game against archrival Simpson High.
